However, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved them for different purposes: Wegovy is approved as a weight loss medication, and Mounjaro is approved as a Type 2 diabetes treatment. Mounjaro\u2019s active ingredient, tirzepatide, is sold as an FDA-approved weight loss drug under the name <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zepbound\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zepbound<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With such similar drugs on the market, many people may wonder which is better and which is less likely to cause common side effects. Here\u2019s what the experts say.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-s-the-difference-between-wegovy-and-mounjaro\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s the difference between Wegovy and Mounjaro?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (semaglutide) and Mounjaro (tirzepatide) are two brand-name injection drugs that have similar effects on the body, but they\u2019re not the same medication. For starters, they don\u2019t have the same active ingredient and are in different drug classes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSemaglutide and tirzepatide are both hormonal analogs that affect receptors in the body that induce satiety and slow gastric emptying,\u201d explains <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.memorialcare.org\/providers\/mir-b-ali\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mir Ali, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, board-certified general surgeon, bariatric surgeon, and medical director of MemorialCare Surgical Weight Loss Center at Orange Coast Medical Center in Fountain Valley, California. \u201cThe difference is that semaglutide affects one receptor, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/glp-1-benefits\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLP-1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, whereas tirzepatide affects the GLP-1 receptor and the GIP receptor.\u201d In other words, Wegovy is solely a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/glp-1-agonists\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while Mounjaro is a dual GLP-1 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> GIP receptor agonist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aside from having different active ingredients and drug classes, these medications have different FDA-approved indications, dosages, and side effect frequencies:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>FDA-indicated uses:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Wegovy is approved for chronic weight management in adults and children 12 years and older with obesity. Mounjaro is approved as an adjunct therapy to diet and exercise for adults with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/diabetes-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 2 diabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is sometimes prescribed off-label for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/best-weight-loss-pills\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight loss<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Dosage:<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/wegovy\/dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy&#8217;s dosage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is lower than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/mounjaro\/dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mounjaro&#8217;s dosage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Wegovy starts at 0.25 milligrams (mg) per week and maxes out at 2.4 mg weekly. Mounjaro starts at 2.5 mg and maxes out at 15 mg per week.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Forms: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy is only available in single-dose injection pens, whereas Mounjaro is available in injection pens and as single-dose vials.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Side effect frequencies: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two drugs have very similar lists of common side effects, but Wegovy causes side effects more often. About 44% of adults reported nausea on Wegovy (compared to 16% of participants on a placebo). After nausea, the most frequent adverse reactions included diarrhea (30%), constipation (24%), and vomiting (24%).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wegovy-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common Wegovy side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abdominal pain or indigestion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/medication-overuse-headache\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sore throat and runny nose<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like most medications, Wegovy use also comes with a risk of serious side effects. You might need to stop using Wegovy or switch to a lower dose. \u201cMany times, the dangerous and more notable side effects \u2026 are due to abuse of these medications,\u201d Dr. Lin says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-are-the-side-effects-of-mounjaro\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the side effects of Mounjaro?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mounjaro\u2019s side effect profile is similar to Wegovy\u2019s, although fewer clinical trial participants experienced unpleasant symptoms. About 12% of participants experienced nausea and\/or diarrhea. The next most common side effects were indigestion (8%), constipation (6%), and stomach pain (6%). Both are effective drugs for their approved uses. That said, Mounjaro has a lower incidence rate of side effects than Wegovy. Some research also suggests that Mounjaro may more effectively control <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/normal-blood-glucose-levels\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood sugar levels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and induce weight loss than Wegovy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only 12% of clinical trial participants experience nausea on Mounjaro compared to 44% on Wegovy. Why the difference? Healthcare providers still aren\u2019t sure. \u201cSince [tirzepatide] affects two receptors, it may be that stimulating both receptors decreases nausea, though this is speculation,\u201d Dr. Ali says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/switching-from-wegovy-to-mounjaro\/\"><b>Wegovy vs. Mounjaro dosage chart: How to switch medications<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/10.1056\/NEJMoa2107519\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study from 2021<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> comparing tirzepatide and semaglutide found that tirzepatide lowered blood glucose levels by up to 2.3% while also inducing significantly more weight loss than semaglutide. In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa2416394\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more recent study funded by Lilly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, participants with obesity but without diabetes lost more body weight after 72 weeks of treatment with tirzepatide (the active ingredient in Mounjaro and Zepbound) than they did with semaglutide (the active ingredient in Wegovy and Ozempic) when taking the maximum dose. Those taking tirzepatide lost an average of 20.2% of their initial body weight, while those who took semaglutide lost 13.7% of their initial body weight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, even though Mounjaro might present a lower risk of side effects and be slightly more effective, that doesn\u2019t make it the best drug for everyone. Both of these medications are considered safe and effective for their approved uses.
