That means that drinking coffee (or consuming other sources of caffeine, such as tea, soft drinks, or matcha) will not prevent Mounjaro from doing its job of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-to-lower-blood-sugar\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lowering blood sugar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, there are other reasons to avoid or reduce your caffeine intake during Mounjaro treatment. Specifically, caffeine may:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Increase glucose levels: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it won\u2019t reduce the efficacy of Mounjaro, it may counteract it in other ways. \u201cCaffeine is known to stimulate the release of glucose from the liver, thus raising glucose levels,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.emtexas.com\/provider\/roshni-patel-md\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Patel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says. \u201cMounjaro is prescribed to reduce glucose levels.\u201d Indeed, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1871402117300966\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that caffeine intake increases blood glucose levels and also prolongs the amount of time that levels stay high.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Exacerbate side effects: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caffeine may exacerbate some of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/druginfo\/meds\/a622044.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most common side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Mounjaro, which include gastrointestinal issues like diarrhea, constipation, nausea, bloating, and acid reflux. \u201cCaffeine can worsen nausea and\/or acid reflux, especially in those patients who are already experiencing gastrointestinal side effects related to Mounjaro,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doctorconnor.com\/about-us\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Connor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cCaffeine can also contribute to dehydration, which has the potential to exacerbate constipation.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Mask hypoglycemia symptoms: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It may also make it more difficult to recognize if you\u2019re experiencing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/hypoglycemia-without-diabetes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hypoglycemia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or low blood sugar, another possible side effect of Mounjaro. \u201cBecause caffeine can increase energy, it may mask fatigue, which is a symptom of hypoglycemia,\u201d says Dr. Patel. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/hypoglycemia\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20373685\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypoglycemia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can cause symptoms of its own, such as headache, dizziness, and fatigue, or more serious reactions. Plus, hypoglycemia may be an indication to talk to your healthcare provider about an adjustment to your medication dosage or frequency, so it\u2019s important to recognize when it happens. But if you\u2019re always hyped up on caffeine, you could miss the signs.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, though, it\u2019s possible and safe to drink coffee if you\u2019re taking Mounjaro and more generally if you have diabetes. \u201cHowever, you do need to pay attention to how much you drink, what you add to your coffee, such as cream and\/or sugar (which can increase sugar and carbohydrate intake), and, maybe most importantly, your blood sugar response to caffeine,\u201d Dr. Connor says. Some people respond more acutely to caffeine than others, which is easy to measure. \u201cIt\u2019s important to monitor blood glucose levels before and after consuming coffee, and avoid coffee drinks that are high in calories and loaded with sugar.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/coffee-and-diabetes\/\"><b>What you should know about coffee and diabetes<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what\u2019s a good guideline? \u201cWhile there aren\u2019t any specific restrictions, it\u2019s generally best practice to limit your daily intake to one to two cups of plain, black coffee while on Mounjaro, especially if you are prone to gastrointestinal discomfort,\u201d Dr. Connor says. \u201cYou should also try to avoid drinking coffee on an empty stomach to reduce the potential for nausea or acid-related symptoms.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While most caffeine-containing drinks are perfectly fine to consume while taking Mounjaro, Dr. Patel says that you may want to steer clear of energy drinks (or caffeine pills) that contain very high amounts of caffeine. The more caffeine you consume and the quicker you consume it, the more likely you are to experience side effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"does-coffee-interact-with-other-diabetes-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does coffee interact with other diabetes medications?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similar to Mounjaro, caffeine does not directly interact with any diabetes medications, so there\u2019s no real safety issue if you want to drink coffee while taking medication for diabetes. However, there are possible side effects of mixing them. Here\u2019s what to consider if you\u2019re taking any of these common diabetes prescriptions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>GLP-1 receptor agonists:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cCaffeine doesn\u2019t directly interact with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/glp-1-benefits\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLP-1 receptor agonists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/trulicity\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trulicity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ozempic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/wegovy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but similar to Mounjaro, it may exacerbate nausea or GI discomfort,\u201d Dr. Connor says.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Sulfonylureas:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cSulfonylureas like Glipizide (sold under the brand names Glucotrol or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/glucotrol-xl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glucotrol XL<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) can increase insulin, so combining with caffeine (which can mask hypoglycemia symptoms) requires careful blood sugar monitoring,\u201d Dr. Connor cautions.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/metformin-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metformin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (one of the most commonly prescribed medications for Type 2 diabetes) can cause diarrhea, and so can coffee, meaning there could be additive bowel effects when combining the two.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/sglt2-inhibitors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SGLT2 inhibitors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/jardiance?q=Jardiance\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jardiance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can cause diuresis, or fluid loss, which could lead to dehydration in an individual already urinating more often due to caffeine.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\t\t<div class=\"singlecare-dynamic-newsletter-wrapper sin-newsletter-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"heading\">Get our diabetes newsletter<\/span>\n\t\t\t<form class=\"form-wrapper\" data-newsletter-form=\"1\" data-subsource=\"Diabetes Newsletter\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"input-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<label for=\"dynamic-email\">Email<\/label>\n\t\t\t\t\t<input type=\"email\" id=\"dynamic-email\" class=\"email\" required>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"input-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<input class=\"submit-form-btn\" type=\"submit\" value=\"Click to sign up\">\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/form>\n\t\t\t<p class=\"success-message\" aria-live=\"polite\"><\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"best-practices-for-taking-mounjaro\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Best practices for taking Mounjaro<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLP-1 drugs are very effective, but there are steps you can take to maximize the benefits of Mounjaro.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"use-it-consistently\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use it consistently<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPatients should inject Mounjaro once weekly and on the same day each week,\u201d Dr. Patel says. \u201cFor example, if the first injection was on a Friday, the following injections should also be on Fridays. The time of day may vary based on a patient&#8217;s personal schedule.\u201d Indeed, the time of day is less important than making sure you perform the injection on the same day each week. If you need to change the day of the week on which you inject Mounjaro, make sure that at least three days have passed since your previous dose before administering it. According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/druginfo\/meds\/a622044.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Library of Medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Mounjaro can be injected in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm, and you should rotate injection sites with each dose.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"change-your-diet\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Change your diet<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since Mounjaro is an injectable and not an oral medication, it can be taken with or without food, but that doesn\u2019t mean you shouldn\u2019t be paying attention to what you eat. \u201cIt\u2019s important to recognize that Mounjaro should be used in conjunction with lifestyle changes (like engaging in regular physical activity and consuming fewer calories) to maximize efficacy,\u201d Dr. Connor says. She recommends filling up on protein- and fiber-rich foods, hydrating foods and fluids, and foods high in iron, B vitamins, and vitamin D to counteract any potential side effects. \u201cAvoid greasy, fried, and high-fat foods as these can worsen nausea, [as well as] sugary drinks and snacks, which undermine the purpose of Mounjaro,\u201d Dr. Connor adds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"adjust-your-meal-schedule\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adjust your meal schedule<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eating small meals throughout the day is best. \u201cPatients on this medication who overeat may experience stomach pain, cramping, or even vomiting,\u201d says Dr. Patel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What should one of those meals look like? Per the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/diabetes.org\/food-nutrition\/food-and-blood-sugar\/diabetes-superstar-foods\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Diabetes Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you should be striving to fill half your plate with non-starchy vegetables like leafy greens, one quarter of your plate with protein-rich foods like beans, legumes, nuts, and fish like salmon or trout, and the remaining quarter with sources of good carbohydrates, like berries, quinoa, farro, or yogurt.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-bottom-line\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bottom line<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, enjoying coffee or other caffeinated beverages is safe while taking Mounjaro to treat Type 2 diabetes. The best way to consume coffee is black, without any sugary additives. But if you\u2019re concerned that you\u2019re drinking too much or you think you may be experiencing adverse effects, always talk to your healthcare provider.
