While they\u2019re technically a fruit, most consider them a culinary vegetable because they are eaten and prepared like one. Here are seven ways this popular produce item is good for your health.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"7-health-benefits-of-tomatoes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7 health benefits of tomatoes<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most people can eat tomatoes as often as they want as part of a healthy diet, says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kimberley Wiemann, MS, RDN<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a registered dietitian from Long Island, New York. One cup of raw or cooked tomatoes equals about one serving, and regularly getting at least one serving of tomatoes each day may help you benefit from all these veggies have to offer, such as these health perks:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-prevent-constipation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Prevent constipation<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One medium-sized tomato contains more than 1 gram of fiber and is about 95% water. This high fiber and water content means eating tomatoes can promote bowel regularity as well as help <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/home-remedies-for-constipation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prevent and treat constipation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to Cynthia Odogwu, MD, a family\u00a0medicine physician practicing in Maryland.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some studies have also linked <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8869745\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tomatoes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to higher amounts of healthy gut bacteria, which may help reduce the risk of liver inflammation and inflammatory bowel diseases.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-lower-your-cancer-risk\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Lower your cancer risk<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tomatoes contain a high amount of a specific antioxidant called lycopene, which gives tomatoes their red color. Antioxidants help protect your cells from damage and may reduce the risk of certain cancers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/cynthia-odogwu-md-02334252\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Odogwu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says some research shows the lycopene in tomatoes may be protective against certain types of cancer, including gastric and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/foods-for-prostate-health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prostate cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8869745\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of studies published in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biology <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">explains that lycopene may inhibit the growth of prostate cancer cells. The combination of vitamin C and fiber in tomatoes may also help protect against stomach cancer. Other studies suggest that higher intakes of tomatoes and lycopene may improve cancer outcomes, with one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10200485\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> finding that people who consumed high amounts of both had a lower rate of death from cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-improve-your-heart-health\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Improve your heart health<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tomatoes have some cardioprotective properties, says Dr. Odogwu: lycopene, alongside some other plant compounds, has both antioxidant <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anti-inflammatory effects, which may lower cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of heart attack. One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8880080\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for example, found that lycopene can protect the heart muscle, reduce the \u201cbad\u201d kind of cholesterol (LDL), and lower blood pressure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That same study also suggests that eating at least one serving of tomato products each day could lower your risk of cardiovascular disease to less than 30%.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-protect-your-brain-function\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Protect your brain function<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their high antioxidant content allows tomatoes to reduce oxidative stress, or the buildup of free radicals (damage-causing cells) in your body, says Dr. Odogwu. This means tomatoes may help protect against degenerative conditions like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/alzheimers-diet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alzheimer\u2019s disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biology <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">review points to several studies linking lycopene to improved cognitive function and memory, as well as the potential to improve other neurodegenerative conditions like Parkinson\u2019s. However, more studies are needed in humans to see if lycopene can truly prevent or treat cognitive disorders.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-improve-exercise-recovery\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Improve exercise recovery<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eating tomatoes has been linked to reduced muscle injury and quicker recovery after exercise. One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/22551119\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that drinking tomato juice lowered oxidative stress after intense physical activity, while another <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29091464\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that giving participants a tomato \u201ccomplex\u201d of lycopene and two other plant compounds had the potential to reduce muscle damage after a two-hour period of running.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although many supplements containing lycopene are targeted to athletes, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7912503\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">existing research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that it\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">everything <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tomatoes have to offer\u2014their flavonoids with high antioxidant activity, the carotenoids that give them their color, and their vitamin C content\u2014that may have the most benefits for athletes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"6-promote-skin-health\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Promote skin health<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The combination of antioxidants, vitamin C, and carotenoids found in tomatoes might be a powerful anti-aging cocktail. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9545714\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> linked supplementation with golden tomato extract to more hydrated, healthier-looking skin, while <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27662341\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have found the nutrients in tomatoes to be protective against UVA and UVB sun damage, including sunburn and hyperpigmentation. Vitamin C in tomatoes also helps support the immune system and boosts the skin\u2019s ability to make collagen, which is important for keeping the skin strong and healthy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"7-balance-blood-sugar\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Balance blood sugar<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kbwnutrition.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wiemann<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the fiber content in tomatoes can help <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/normal-blood-glucose-levels\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">optimize blood glucose levels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, making them a diabetes-friendly food. As a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/diabetes.org\/food-nutrition\/reading-food-labels\/non-starchy-vegetables\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">non-starchy vegetable<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, tomatoes won\u2019t cause dramatic spikes in your blood sugar, and people with diabetes can eat them freely without worrying about the side effects on their glucose levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because they\u2019re relatively low in carbohydrates, tomatoes may also be helpful for promoting weight loss in people with diabetes. Plus, tomatoes\u2019 heart-healthy benefits should be appealing to those who are at a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28318092\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">higher risk of heart disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"tomato-nutrition-facts\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tomato nutrition facts<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just one cup of raw tomatoes is loaded with vitamins and minerals: more than 2 grams of fiber, about 25 milligrams of vitamin C, around 427 milligrams of potassium, and almost 5 milligrams of lycopene. The more tomatoes you eat, the more positive effects you\u2019ll see, says Wiemann, but when it comes to foods that provide a health benefit, eating <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is better than eating none.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re not a huge tomato fan and want to make the most of the tomatoes you do eat, try to eat them cooked in ketchup, tomato paste, or tomato soup. The lycopene in tomatoes becomes more bioavailable, or accessible by the body, when they\u2019re cooked, says Wiemann. For example, one cup of cooked tomato sauce contains around 37 milligrams of lycopene, far more than the same amount of raw tomatoes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s not to say you can\u2019t enjoy fresh tomatoes drizzled with olive oil or on a burger, especially if you\u2019re more interested in their vitamin C content. \u201cVitamin C is sensitive to heat, so cooking tomatoes can decrease the amount of vitamin C they contain,\u201d says Dr. Odogwu.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basically, the way you eat tomatoes determines which benefits you\u2019ll maximize, but they\u2019re healthy however you eat them. Unlike some other foods, which can have a bigger impact when you eat them in the morning versus the evening, tomatoes are always good for you. For example, red tomatoes have more compounds that may help lower blood sugar than yellow tomatoes, she explains, while <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31763483\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">purple tomatoes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> contain high amounts of lutein, a potent antioxidant known to protect against various eye conditions, such as macular degeneration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond how you cook or prepare tomatoes, some varieties simply have more lycopene, which may make them slightly healthier than others. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/230156845_Lycopene_content_in_raw_tomato_varieties_and_tomato_products\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Red tomatoes, like Roma and cherry tomatoes, have the most lycopene<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but some of it may not be readily absorbed. Some research suggests a specific type of orange tomato, called a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/10408398.2020.1775172\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tangerine tomato<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, may provide the most absorbable form of lycopene.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"are-tomatoes-safe-for-everyone\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are tomatoes safe for everyone?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In general, tomatoes are safe for most people to eat, but some might want to avoid or limit their intake. Tomatoes have a high acidity level, which can cause digestive distress in some people (especially if you eat a lot of acidic foods or have poor gut health).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Wiemann, you may want to avoid tomatoes if you:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/kidney-diet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kidney disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and\/or need to limit your potassium intake<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are following a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ibs-diet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low FODMAP diet due to irritable bowel syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (IBS)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have a known sensitivity to the acid or fructose content of tomatoes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/gerd-diet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acid reflux<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or a history of indigestion with acidic foods<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wiemann also notes that eating too many tomatoes can cause your skin to temporarily change color, taking on a yellow or orange hue. This temporary change isn\u2019t harmful, but can be alarming if you aren\u2019t expecting it!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"bottom-line-are-tomatoes-good-for-you\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bottom line: Are tomatoes good for you?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tomatoes are not only a readily available and delicious summer produce option, they\u2019re also full of nutrients that can improve your health. Research suggests tomatoes may have anticancer properties, may reduce your risk of heart disease, and can improve signs of cognitive decline and skin aging, among other benefits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The other good news about tomatoes? There is a wide variety of tomato recipes, making it easy to incorporate them into your diet.
