It\u2019s usually categorized as a serotonin modulator, which is similar to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/ssris\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but not exactly the same. Trintellix also has a slightly different side effect profile than some other common SSRIs, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zoloft\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zoloft<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (sertraline) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/prozac\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prozac<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (fluoxetine), often causing less weight gain but more gastrointestinal distress.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s what to know about the side effects of starting Trintellix, including how to manage them, when they might improve, and when to contact your healthcare provider.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-trintellix-used-for\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is Trintellix used for?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2013, the Food &amp; Drug Administration approved Trintellix for use in treating symptoms of MDD, a severe and often chronic form of depression. But it is sometimes prescribed off-label for some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/trintellix-for-anxiety\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anxiety disorders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trintellix is a serotonin modulator that works in two ways: by increasing serotonin levels in your brain, and by making that serotonin more available to be <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">used <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by your brain. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindpath.com\/clinicians\/jasmine-kaur-md\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jasmine Kaur<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, psychiatrist with Mindpath Health, this makes Trintellix a multimodal antidepressant, especially since it also increases the levels of several other neurotransmitters in the brain, too, including norepinephrine.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-to-know-about-starting-trintellix\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What to know about starting Trintellix<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re thinking about starting Trintellix or have just begun taking this medication, you might be wondering what to expect as far as dosage and timing. Although individual treatment plans vary, here\u2019s a general idea of what to expect when starting Trintellix.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"trintellix-starting-dose\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trintellix starting dose\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Kaur, a typical dose of Trintellix is between 5 and 20 milligrams (mg), with most people starting at five or 10 mg and slowly increasing from there, if needed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA maintenance dose depends on various factors, including your response to the medication, any interactions with other medications, and potential side effects,\u201d Dr. Kaur explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"how-long-does-it-take-trintellix-to-start-working\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long does it take Trintellix to start working?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trintellix takes about as long to start working as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-long-does-it-take-antidepressants-to-work\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most other antidepressants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> do. Dr. Kaur says you might start noticing an improvement in your symptoms after two to three weeks, but it usually takes four to eight weeks before the medication is working at its full potential.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"trintellix-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trintellix side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/side-effects-of-antidepressants\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antidepressants carry a risk of side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and Trintellix is no different. That said, as a serotonin modulator, Trintellix is known for potentially causing somewhat different <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/trintellix-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than some other common antidepressants.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"trintellix-side-effects-when-starting\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trintellix side effects when starting<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a wide range of potential side effects when it comes to starting Trintellix. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/louisvillegracepsychological.com\/about-dr-nick-bach\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nick Bach<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Psy.D., a licensed clinical psychologist in Louisville, Kentucky, says his patients have described everything from mild and temporary to challenging or persistent side effects, with the most common one being nausea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In clinical trials of Trintellix, about 25% of people experienced nausea. However, the nausea is often the worst when you first start taking Trintellix. In those same trials, only around 10% of people were still reporting nausea after being on the medication for six to eight weeks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Bach says you may be able to relieve some of the initial nausea after starting Trintellix by taking your dose with food, splitting up the dose, or adjusting the timing of your dose. Some people may also have cognitive side effects, like dizziness and brain fog, which also usually go away as your body adjusts to the medication, according to Dr. Bach.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone is different, though, and University of Missouri Health Care psychiatrist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.muhealth.org\/doctors\/ashish-sarangi-md\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ashish Sarangi<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, says your dose can play a role in the severity of your symptoms, with higher doses causing more side effects. For example, in the Trintellix clinical trials, the 10% of people still experiencing nausea after six to eight weeks on the drug were taking a dose between 10 and 20 mg (as opposed to 5 mg).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some other common side effects of starting Trintellix, per Dr. Sarangi, include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dry mouth<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headaches<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sexual dysfunction, like decreased libido or difficulty achieving orgasm<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"trintellix-side-effects-over-time\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trintellix side effects over time<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you need to increase your dose of Trintellix, your healthcare provider will help you do this slowly and safely, minimizing side effects, until you reach a maintenance dose. At that point, some of your side effects may lessen or go away, but others could persist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, Dr. Sarangi says many of the more common side effects, especially the GI symptoms like nausea, tend to go away a few weeks after a new dose is started. Other side effects, like dry mouth, dizziness, and headaches, may also go away the longer you\u2019re on Trintellix. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/sex-on-ssris\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sexual side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, however, can take longer to go away and could even continue for as long as you\u2019re on the medication, she notes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, Trintellix is often associated with fewer side effects than other antidepressants. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10816261\/#:~:text=The%20PRSexDQ*%2D%20SALSEX%20scale,in%20real%2Dlife%20clinical%20settings\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 2024 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> even shows an improvement in sexual dysfunction in people switching to Trintellix after experiencing serious sexual dysfunction while taking other antidepressants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your side effects don\u2019t get better over time or are affecting your quality of life, talk to your healthcare provider. There may be another medication you can take to manage your MDD symptoms that doesn\u2019t cause persistent side effects for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"trintellix-missed-dose-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trintellix missed dose side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most people won\u2019t experience any severe symptoms from missing a single dose of Trintellix, according to Dr. Bach. Unlike SSRIs, Trintellix has a relatively long half-life of about 66 hours, so it stays in your system for a while, and a missed dose isn\u2019t likely to cause immediate <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/trintellix-withdrawal\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">withdrawal symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But some people will experience mild dizziness, nausea, or mood changes from missing a dose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRepeatedly missing or skipping doses, however, can not only cause withdrawal symptoms like headache, irritability, or worsening depression, but also lower Trintellix\u2019s effectiveness in treating your symptoms,\u201d Dr. Sarangi says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/missed-medication-protocol\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">miss a dose of Trintellix<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Dr. Sarangi recommends taking it as soon as you remember unless it\u2019s closer to your next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and take your next dose on your regular schedule. It\u2019s important to<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> never double your dose<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or take two doses of an antidepressant close together, as this can increase your risk of side effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"when-to-see-a-doctor-for-trintellix-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When to see a doctor for Trintellix side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While side effects like nausea, vomiting, brain fog, and dry mouth are common when first starting Trintellix, it\u2019s important to know the difference between normal side effects and potentially serious side effects or allergic reactions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Sarangi says you should contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical attention if you experience any of the following after starting Trintellix:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe nausea or vomiting that doesn\u2019t improve<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Worsening depression or suicidal thoughts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/serotonin-syndrome-symptoms\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serotonin syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like agitation, confusion, rapid heart rate, muscle rigidity, or fever<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms of a severe allergic reaction, like rash, swelling, or difficulty breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Persistent sexual dysfunction that impacts your quality of life<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although it can be frustrating to cope with side effects like GI distress or brain fog when starting a drug like Trintellix, you should never suddenly stop taking it or change your dose without talking to your healthcare provider first. Doing so can increase your risk for additional side effects, according to Dr. Sarangi, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Withdrawal symptoms like dizziness, irritability, anxiety, and headache<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Worsening depression or anxiety symptoms<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interactions with other medications you\u2019re taking or treatments you\u2019re undergoing<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you want to stop taking Trintellix or lower your dose, your healthcare provider will work with you to taper it gradually in an effort to limit side effects and help your body readjust to the changing levels of medication in your system.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Trintellix (vortioxetine) is an antidepressant approved for use in treating major depressive disorder (MDD).
