While it has skyrocketed in popularity, it\u2019s not necessarily for everyone. So, who can take Ozempic, and who shouldn\u2019t? Here are all the important details.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-ozempic-approved-to-treat\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is Ozempic approved to treat?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) initially approved Ozempic for managing high blood sugar in people with Type 2 diabetes. Since then, it\u2019s also gained approval for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-and-heart-disease\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reducing cardiovascular risk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in adults with heart disease and Type 2 diabetes, as well as for preventing worsening kidney disease and cardiovascular death in adults with Type 2 diabetes and chronic <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/ozempic-kidney-disease-fda-approval\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kidney disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIts primary mechanism of action is to regulate insulin release in the body, which makes sense for managing blood sugar,\u201d says Logan G. Galbraith, MD, a physician at Invigor Medical. \u201cHowever, another natural function of semaglutide in the body is to influence satiety and appetite effects that are predictable based on how the peptide works.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"off-label-uses-for-ozempic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Off-label uses for Ozempic<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because it helps people lose body weight, some healthcare professionals will also prescribe Ozempic for weight management. This is considered an off-label use, since it\u2019s for a condition that doesn\u2019t fall under the drug\u2019s official FDA approvals. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41591-024-02996-7\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a study of over 17,000 people<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, patients taking semaglutide experienced an average weight loss of 10.2% and a reduction in waist circumference of 7.7 cm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet the benefits don\u2019t stop at weight management. \u201cBy addressing weight loss with medications like semaglutide, we are in fact addressing and protecting overall patient health,\u201d Dr. Galbraith says. He says these benefits can include improved cholesterol and blood pressure levels, plus a reduced risk of cardiovascular events like heart attack and stroke.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The other primary off-label use for Ozempic is to treat <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-for-pcos\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A study from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1056872724001600\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of Diabetes and Its Complications<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">found that GLP-1 medications (Ozempic\u2019s drug class) reduced body mass index (BMI), triglycerides, waist circumference, and total testosterone in people with PCOS.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"who-can-take-ozempic-for-weight-loss\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who can take Ozempic for weight loss?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If we\u2019re sticking strictly to its FDA-approved purpose, Ozempic should treat obesity in adults over 18 who also have Type 2 diabetes. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK592412\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two often go hand in hand<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so it\u2019s a fairly common diagnosis. \u201c\u200b\u200bMany patients are great candidates for Ozempic treatment, particularly those who would benefit from weight loss, and heart\/kidney protection in addition to glycemic control,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ketchum.edu\/directory\/diana-roman\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diana Roman, <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pharm.D., assistant professor at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ketchum.edu\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marshall B. Ketchum University<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> College of Pharmacy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But seeing the demand for Ozempic as an obesity drug, manufacturer Novo Nordisk produced another drug with the same active ingredient that\u2019s specifically for weight loss. It\u2019s called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/wegovy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which also has the active ingredient semaglutide but in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/wegovy\/dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">different doses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than Ozempic.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So while healthcare providers can still prescribe <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-weight-loss\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic for weight loss<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there is a separate, officially FDA-approved option from the same manufacturer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/best-time-to-inject-ozempic\/\">When is the best time to inject Ozempic?<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"who-should-not-take-ozempic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who should not take Ozempic?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having Type 2 diabetes (and potentially obesity) doesn\u2019t automatically make someone a good candidate for Ozempic treatment. Certain medical conditions and other medications might make it an unsafe option for some.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ozempic-contraindications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic contraindications<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPatients with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN2), Type 1 diabetes, or diabetic retinopathy should absolutely NOT take semaglutide,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drugwatch.com\/contributors\/kathryn-horton-md\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kathryn Horton, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Internal Medicine Physician at <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/drugwatch.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drugwatch.com<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Semaglutide research has shown that it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/druginfo\/meds\/a618008.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increases the risk of thyroid tumors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in laboratory animals. It\u2019s unclear whether this risk of thyroid cancer applies to humans as well, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11050669\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have suggested that it might not. That\u2019s why the FDA still issued a boxed warning on Ozempic for people who have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2\u2014a condition that causes endocrine gland tumors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSimilarly, patients with a history of pancreatitis, cholecystitis, gallstones, kidney stones, or gastroparesis should carefully weigh the risks and benefits of taking semaglutide before starting it,\u201d Dr. Horton says. It\u2019s also contraindicated for anyone who has a known hypersensitivity to semaglutide or any of Ozempic\u2019s other ingredients.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"drug-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drug interactions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking certain medications might also preclude someone from Ozempic treatment, since there are some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-interactions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interactions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be aware of. Ozempic lowers blood sugar, so taking it with other medications that also lower blood sugar can lead to hypoglycemia (symptomatically low blood sugar). This includes sulfonylureas, insulin, and other diabetes drugs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"other-precautions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other precautions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some medical conditions might make a healthcare provider hesitant to prescribe Ozempic, or possibly just require additional monitoring during treatment. These conditions include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Gastroparesis: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Per Dr. Roman, \u201cOzempic is not recommended in patients with gastroparesis. This is because Ozempic slows down gut motility. It would not be appropriate in a patient who already has a slow gut.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Pancreas issues:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Ozempic can cause <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10506915\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pancreatitis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is an inflammation of the pancreas.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Vision issues:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It can also cause blurred vision and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aao.org\/eyenet\/article\/update-on-semaglutide-risks\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increase the risk of diabetic retinopathy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Kidney impairment:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Ozempic may actually help reduce the risk of worsening kidney disease, but it has also been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8039426\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">linked to acute kidney injury<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so people with prior kidney issues might need to be cautious.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Pregnancy or breastfeeding:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It\u2019s unknown if Ozempic affects pregnancy or passes into breast milk.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Gallbladder issues:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Ozempic has also been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8961394\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">linked to gallstones and other gallbladder diseases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These conditions don\u2019t automatically disqualify you from treatment, but they might be enough to encourage your healthcare provider to consider other medications or treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side effects<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most drugs come with a risk of side effects, and they don\u2019t necessarily preclude someone from treatment. However, some people who experience adverse effects might decide they want to discontinue Ozempic. Clinical trials show that the most common <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects of Ozempic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are gastrointestinal, such as constipation, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. It may also cause serious side effects like pancreatitis, acute kidney injury, facial swelling, and gallstones, but these are much more rare.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to inform your healthcare provider about any side effects you experience. They know your medical history, lifestyle, and preferences, so they can let you know if it\u2019s a good option for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis conversation is also important to tease out what the patient\u2019s goals are by taking Ozempic and ensure they are achievable or realistic,\u201d Dr. Horton says. \u201cThis dialogue is also an important opportunity for counseling the patient that a medication like Ozempic works best when combined with a balanced diet and regular physical activity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-to-get-ozempic-for-weight-loss\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">asking your healthcare provider for Ozempic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, discuss your prior weight-loss attempts, like dieting, exercising, or taking supplements or other medications. If you haven\u2019t made other lifestyle changes to lose weight, it\u2019s important to develop a diet and exercise plan to complement Ozempic treatment. It can also be good to create and share weight loss goals, so your healthcare provider knows your timeline and how much weight you\u2019d like to lose. All of these details will help tailor medical advice to your specific circumstances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are some websites that claim to offer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/is-compounded-semaglutide-safe\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">compounded semaglutide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at lower prices than brand-name Ozempic. Compounded drugs are mixed by a pharmacy, not manufactured by the official producer, but Dr. Roman recommends against them. \u201cThese compounded products are not approved by the FDA,\u201d she says. \u201cSimply put, we are not certain about their content, safety, quality, or effectiveness.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/diabetesjournals.org\/care\/article\/48\/2\/177\/157478\/Compounded-GLP-1-and-Dual-GIP-GLP-1-Receptor\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Diabetes Association also recommends against<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> compounded GLP-1 medications, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/postmarket-drug-safety-information-patients-and-providers\/fdas-concerns-unapproved-glp-1-drugs-used-weight-loss\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as does the FDA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Plus, there have been cases of counterfeit Ozempic that could contain harmful ingredients.
