Because they can help prevent so many serious conditions, doctors write millions of prescriptions for them every year. Both can be effective in preventing clots, but a healthcare professional will choose one or the other based on the patient\u2019s specific condition, medical history, other drugs, and risk factors.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-happens-if-you-take-a-double-dose-of-a-blood-thinner\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What happens if you take a double dose of a blood thinner?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether you missed a dose and tried to make up for it, or accidentally took two pills instead of one, realizing you\u2019ve taken a double dose can be startling. But it\u2019s important not to panic. \u201cIn most cases, not much will happen if you mistakenly take a double dose,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/manhattancardiology.com\/team\/karishma-patwa-md\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Karishma Patwa, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a cardiologist with Manhattan Cardiology and contributor to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.labfinder.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">www.labfinder.com<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For example, \u201cTaking an extra dose of aspirin won\u2019t have that much effect on platelets, as the standard dose is already quite low,\u201d says Dr. Austin Shuxiao, MD, founder and medical director of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peach IV<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But \u201ctaking an extra dose of warfarin could have consequences as it may alter your international normalized ratio (INR) and clotting ability for days,\u201d while a double dose of a P2Y12 inhibitor like Plavix can cause an \u201cincreased risk of bleeding from easy bruising, GI bleed, mucosal tissue, and joints, similar to double dosing other blood thinners.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side effects may also depend on the patient\u2019s medical condition and health history. In fact, \u201cCardiologists will sometimes prescribe multiple blood thinners despite the risk of bleeding for specific clinical situations where the threat of clotting outweighs the risk of bleeding,\u201d Dr. Shuxiao says. This includes people who have just received a new stent in the heart or who have recently had a major stroke.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Always take your blood thinner exactly as prescribed. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-happens-if-you-miss-a-dose-of-blood-thinner\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have a missed dose<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, don\u2019t attempt to balance it out by doubling up on the next scheduled dose, as doing so could increase your risk of bleeding. In some extreme cases, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/druginfo\/meds\/a682277.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it can even be fatal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. So if you think you may have taken too much, be on the lookout for the symptoms listed above, and contact a healthcare provider if you experience them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you start to have bleeding, please seek medical attention as there are reversal agents for some blood thinners,\u201d Dr. Patwa says. \u201cIf you are on Coumadin (warfarin), it is important to have your INR checked within a few days.\u201d Checking your INR typically involves regular blood tests.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the symptoms are severe, especially bleeding, you may want to head straight to the emergency room to get immediate medical attention. Or, if you\u2019ve taken a lot more than a double dose and fear an overdose, it might help to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.poison.org\/articles\/what-is-eliquis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">call poison control<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> right away.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-avoid-taking-a-double-dose-in-the-future\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to avoid taking a double dose in the future<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoiding double doses in the first place can save a lot of worry and potential consequences\u2014and certain strategies can help you make sure you consistently take the correct dose at the correct time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMany people who are on blood thinners are also on other medications, so it can be easy to mix up medications and take a double dose, so using a weekly pill case can certainly help prevent double dosing,\u201d Dr. Patwa says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPatients can also make reminders on their phone to remind them at the exact time every day to take their medications and how much of each to take,\u201d Dr. Shuxiao adds. \u201cFor older people who may be forgetful, it\u2019s best to have aid or family members organize the medications ahead of time to prevent errors.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These tips might not completely eliminate the risk of taking a double dose, but as long as you follow your healthcare provider\u2019s instructions, they should significantly reduce it.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Blood thinners can be life-saving medicines\u2014and that\u2019s no exaggeration.
