While there may be more yet to be discovered about Zepbound\u2019s duration in the body, here\u2019s what may influence how long it stays in your system.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-metabolism\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Metabolism<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metabolism refers to chemical reactions in the body that turn food into energy, but it can also refer to how the body processes medications. \u201cMetabolism can affect how long Zepbound stays in your system, but not dramatically,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gutsygirlmd.com\/about\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supriya Rao, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an obesity medicine provider based in the Greater Boston area.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, this isn\u2019t fully understood. \u201cSome people appear to absorb and metabolize the medication differently, but it\u2019s not clear what characteristics drive better absorption of the drug,\u201d Dr. Corrado says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Zepbound is no exception. The most <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pi.lilly.com\/us\/zepbound-us-mg.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Zepbound are gastrointestinal, Dr. Corrado says. When you stop taking Zepbound, which works for weight loss by reducing your appetite, your appetite and food cravings may return to normal. \u201cSome folks may notice a return of appetite or weight regain if lifestyle habits aren\u2019t in place,\u201d Dr. Rao says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zepbound works by mimicking the actions of two hormones, GIP and GLP-1, to suppress appetite and slow digestion. This explains why it\u2019s effective as a chronic weight management treatment. However, Zepbound isn\u2019t a quick fix, Dr. Rao says. It\u2019s intended to be combined with lifestyle changes, such as a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, for weight loss that\u2019s sustainable. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10748770\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommend lifestyle modifications, such as diet and exercise, as an adjunct to anti-obesity medications but say more studies are needed on their role.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"zepbound-accumulation-and-longevity\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zepbound accumulation and longevity<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zepbound isn\u2019t habit-forming, and stopping it doesn\u2019t cause withdrawal symptoms. So, where does the medication go if it doesn\u2019t accumulate? \u201cThe body eliminates broken-down metabolites of Zepbound via urine and feces,\u201d Dr. Corrado says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elimination aside, Zepbound isn\u2019t designed for short-term use, Dr. Rao says. Many of the clinical studies looked at Zepbound\u2019s effects when used for more than a year, suggesting that it\u2019s most effective when used long-term. What\u2019s more, stopping the medication is associated with regaining weight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa2206038\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one clinical trial<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The New England Journal of Medicine<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, adults with obesity had significant reductions in body weight after 72 weeks of taking tirzepatide. Those taking the highest dose, 15 mg, experienced the largest weight reductions\u2014an average of 20.9%. In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/38078870\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">another clinical trial<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, adults with obesity or overweight lost an average of 25.3% of body weight while taking tirzepatide for 88 weeks. Interestingly, researchers found that participants who were switched to a placebo (inactive treatment) nearly halfway through regained an average of 14% of their body weight.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"zepbound-alternatives\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zepbound alternatives<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zepbound is used for weight loss, weight management, and obstructive sleep apnea.
