Blood clots occur when cells in the blood clump together and form a mass, which can even travel to other parts of the body and cause harm. There are many possible causes and risk factors of abnormal blood clot formation, such as injury, certain medical conditions, genetic predisposition, medications, and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re at increased risk of blood clots or take <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/blood-thinner-prices\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood-thinning medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, your healthcare provider may recommend making some lifestyle changes. Certain dietary choices may contribute to overall blood clot risk or interact with blood thinners. Foods to avoid for blood clotting typically include those that are processed and high in sodium, sugar, and saturated and trans fats. Those taking certain blood-thinning medications may also be advised to monitor their vitamin K intake and avoid certain fruits, fruit juices, and alcohol.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"7-foods-that-increase-the-risk-of-blood-clots\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7 foods that increase the risk of blood clots<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain foods don\u2019t directly cause blood clots, but your diet is still an important factor in reducing your overall risk. Certain foods may also interact with anticoagulants, blood-thinning medications used to prevent clots. Foods to avoid for those at increased risk of blood clots typically include the following.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-ultra-processed-foods\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Ultra-processed foods<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHighly processed foods can cause inflammation in the body, which can lead to conditions that promote blood clots,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.metroveincenters.com\/vein-doctors\/dr-hugh-pabarue\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hugh Pabarue, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a vein specialist in the larger Detroit metropolitan area. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/37348154\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> show that intake of ultra-processed foods moderately increases the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE), a blood clot that can create a blockage in the veins.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do you know if a food is ultra-processed? Many foods at the supermarket are highly processed, Dr. Pabarue says. This helps it last longer on the shelves, but they\u2019re also engineered to taste better. They tend to come in excess packaging, though a long list of ingredients that are difficult to pronounce is also a tell-tale sign, Dr. Pabarue says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examples of ultra-processed foods include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bread<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cereal<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cakes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cookies<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chips<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frozen meals<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"2-high-sodium-foods\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. High-sodium foods<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29917063\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High sodium intake<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is directly associated with an increased risk of clotting. It stimulates the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24733925\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">secretion of factors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that increase the risk of clot formation. On top of that, blood clots are one of the possible complications of high blood pressure, or hypertension. Blood clots caused by high blood pressure could even lead to a stroke, per the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/high-blood-pressure\/in-depth\/high-blood-pressure\/art-20045868\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mayo Clinic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cHigh sodium intake may impair blood vessel function and increase blood pressure, raising clot risk,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/entirelynourished.com\/about\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michelle Routhenstein, RD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a cardiology dietitian in New York.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A low-sodium diet known as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/high-blood-pressure-diet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is often recommended for those with hypertension. While some of the research is mixed, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11999685\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have demonstrated that adherence to the DASH diet is associated with a reduced risk of VTE.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examples of high-sodium foods include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ramen noodles<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canned soups<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Condiments like soy sauce and ketchup<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Processed meats<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some cheeses<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fast food<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"3-vitamin-k-rich-foods\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Vitamin K-rich foods<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitamin K is an essential nutrient, and it\u2019s part of an overall healthy diet. However, those taking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/warfarin-sodium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">warfarin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014found in the brand-name medications <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/jantoven\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jantoven<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Coumadin\u2014may be advised to keep an eye on their vitamin K intake. \u201cFoods rich in vitamin K, such as green leafy vegetables, can make certain blood thinners less effective, increasing the risk for clots,\u201d Dr. Pabarue says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, there are some misconceptions about this, Routhenstein says. Vitamin K doesn\u2019t interact with all blood thinners, just those containing warfarin. Those taking warfarin shouldn\u2019t avoid vitamin K-rich foods completely, Routhenstein says. It\u2019s recommended that people taking warfarin aim for the same amount of vitamin K every day rather than suddenly decreasing or increasing their intake.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitamin K-rich foods typically include leafy greens, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brussels sprouts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collard greens<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kale<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Broccoli<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cabbage<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asparagus<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Green tea<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"4-saturated-and-trans-fats\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Saturated and trans fats<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of the dietary recommendations for reducing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/heart-disease-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> risk also apply to reducing the risk of blood clots. This is the case with \u201cbad\u201d fats like saturated and trans fats, which may negatively affect heart health and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/high-cholesterol-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">raise cholesterol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSaturated fat contributes to artery plaque buildup, narrowing vessels, and affecting clotting factors to promote clots,\u201d Routhenstein says. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5001225\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommend lowering saturated fat intake and omitting trans fats to manage diabetes and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saturated fats include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beef and beef tallow<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pork<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lard<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coconut oil<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baked goods<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fried foods<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trans fats include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shortening<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Margarine<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baked goods<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fried foods<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dough<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frozen pizza<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"5-refined-sugars\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Refined sugars<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sugar comes from a natural source\u2014fruits contain natural sugars, for example. But refined sugars are heavily processed, and they may pose a risk to cardiovascular health. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10636232\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> show that added sugars can increase the risk of heart disease, while the natural sugars found in fruits and vegetables do not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRefined sugars cause inflammation to the gut and, when absorbed into the bloodstream, increase the risk for blood clots in blood vessels,\u201d Dr. Pabarue says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There may be a similar link between one type of artificial sweetener and blood clot formation, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10334259\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> involving stable patients undergoing elective cardiac evaluation. Certain fruits and fruit juices<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grapefruit and grapefruit juice can interfere with a variety of medications, including certain blood thinners. \u201cSome of the natural contents in grapefruit are broken down into chemicals that interact with some blood thinners, affecting their efficacy,\u201d Dr. Pabarue explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/what-to-avoid-when-taking-blood-thinners\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cleveland Clinic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this also includes other fruits and their juices, such as cranberry and pomegranate.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"7-alcohol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Alcohol<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoiding alcohol is usually a good idea for overall health. It\u2019s especially important for those who take medication that thins the blood, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/aspirin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aspirin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or certain anticoagulants. \u201cAlcohol thins the blood, increasing the risk for bleeding,\u201d Dr. Pabarue explains. It can also interfere with how they work, increasing the risk of clotting as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"3-foods-that-reduce-blood-clotting\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3 foods that reduce blood clotting<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several factors reduce the risk of blood clots, such as getting enough physical activity, maintaining a healthy body weight, and staying hydrated. Your diet may also play a preventive role, Routhenstein says. Following a heart-healthy diet helps support proper circulation, but the following nutrients and foods particularly stand out for blood clot prevention.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-omega-3-fatty-acids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Omega-3 fatty acids<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not all fat is bad for your heart health. In fact, omega-3 fatty acids, often referred to as \u201chealthy fats,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/37264945\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have been shown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to lower cholesterol, triglycerides, and possibly heart disease risk, particularly among those with high cholesterol and obesity. \u201cOmega-3s from fatty fish, flaxseeds, and walnuts may help reduce blood viscosity and make platelets less sticky,\u201d Routhenstein explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the heart health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids from food sources may not apply to omega-3 supplements. In fact, dietary supplements containing omega-3s may interact with some blood clotting medications, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nccih.nih.gov\/health\/tips\/things-to-know-about-omegas-for-heart-disease\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-vitamin-e-and-other-antioxidants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Vitamin E and other antioxidants<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8874674\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that vitamin E has anti-inflammatory and anticoagulant properties, and it may inhibit blood clotting. Foods like almonds, sunflower seeds, and spinach are rich sources of vitamin E, Routhenstein says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other antioxidants may be beneficial too. \u201cAntioxidants protect blood vessels from damage caused by oxidative stress, which can trigger clot formation,\u201d Routhenstein says. Antioxidant-rich foods can include fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-some-spices\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Some spices<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What you season your food with may also support circulation. \u201cSpices like turmeric, ginger, and garlic have natural blood-thinning properties but should be used cautiously with blood-thinning medications to avoid excessive bleeding,\u201d Routhenstein says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"factors-that-increase-the-risk-of-blood-clotting\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Factors that increase the risk of blood clotting<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Almost anyone can develop a serious type of blood clot known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/blood-clots\/risk-factors\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
