Vyvanse is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and binge eating disorder. Since it can cost over $550 for a 30-day supply of 30 mg capsules without insurance, many people rely on insurance to make it more affordable. However, coverage varies by plan and may depend on various factors.<\/span><\/p>\n

Does UnitedHealthcare cover Vyvanse?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Some UHC prescription drug plans cover <\/span>brand-name Vyvanse<\/span><\/a>, but others may not. The details of each plan\u2019s coverage depend on several factors, including the plan\u2019s formulary, prior authorization requirements, and the reason for the prescription.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Formularies<\/span><\/h3>\n

A UHC drug formulary may cover Vyvanse, but place it on a higher tier. Generic drugs are often on the lowest tier, followed by preferred brands, then non-preferred brands, and specialty drugs. Out-of-pocket costs typically increase as the tiers go up.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cVyvanse is sometimes placed on higher tiers, leading to higher <\/span>copays<\/span><\/a>,\u201d says <\/span>Zishan Khan<\/span><\/a>, MD<\/span>, a psychiatrist at Mindpath Health. Many UnitedHealthcare formularies classify brand-name Vyvanse as a non-preferred drug, so it might not be covered. However, many of the same plans will cover <\/span>generic Vyvanse<\/span><\/a> (lisdexamfetamine).<\/span><\/p>\n

Plan guidelines may also include <\/span>quantity limits<\/span><\/a>, which restrict the amount you can get per month. That\u2019s because, like <\/span>Adderall<\/span><\/a>, Vyvanse is a <\/span>controlled substance<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Prior authorization<\/span><\/h3>\n

Since many plans place brand-name Vyvanse in a higher tier, they may require prior authorization before offering coverage. <\/span>Prior authorization<\/span><\/a> requires a healthcare provider\u2019s explanation of why the drug is medically necessary. \u201cSome reasons I use include the fact that it is once daily dosing, has a smoother delivery, and there is a lower abuse potential,\u201d Dr. Khan says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The insurance company may also need to see that the patient tried other ineffective or poorly tolerated medications, according to Dr. Khan. This requirement is called <\/span>step therapy<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Reason for the prescription<\/span><\/h3>\n

Although Vyvanse is <\/span>approved<\/span><\/a> to treat ADHD and binge eating disorder, some doctors may prescribe it for treatment-resistant depression or <\/span>narcolepsy<\/span><\/a>. These are \u201c<\/span>off-label<\/span><\/a>\u201d uses, for which some plans won\u2019t cover Vyvanse.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Does UnitedHealthcare cover generic Vyvanse?<\/span><\/h2>\n

If you look at your UHC <\/span>prescription drug formulary<\/span><\/a> and see Vyvanse in a high tier, don\u2019t be discouraged. Chances are, it will cover the generic, since generic drugs are often<\/span> less expensive<\/span><\/a> than their brand-name counterparts but <\/span>equally effective<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

For example, this <\/span>2026 UHC drug formulary<\/span><\/a> lists generic lisdexamfetamine as a covered drug across most plans, while brand-name Vyvanse may be excluded or require prior authorization on certain plans, including those in Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York. However, it lists the generic as a tier 3 drug, which means it will be covered but will cost more than drugs on tiers 1 and 2. Formularies vary by plan, so check yours to verify coverage.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI absolutely recommend generic lisdexamfetamine as a cost-effective alternative,\u201d Dr. Khan says. \u201cIn fact, the vast majority of patients are given this by their pharmacies when I order Vyvanse.\u201d Most prescriptions include the phrase \u201cSubstitution Permitted\u201d as a way of allowing pharmacists to dispense the generic alternative.<\/span><\/p>\n

How much does Vyvanse cost?<\/span><\/h2>\n

For anyone <\/span>paying completely out of pocket for their Vyvanse prescription<\/span><\/a>, it can cost around $555 for 30, 30 mg capsules. That\u2019s a one-month supply, so paying out of pocket for an entire year can cost over $6,600.<\/span><\/p>\n

As we\u2019ve mentioned, generic Vyvanse is usually cheaper, but it still costs about $439 for 30, 30 mg capsules, which can add up to over $5,000 per year.<\/span><\/p>\n

How much does Vyvanse cost with UnitedHealthcare?<\/span><\/h2>\n

If your UHC plan covers either brand-name or generic Vyvanse, you most likely will pay less than the prices listed above. How much you\u2019ll pay depends on which tier they\u2019re on and the copay or coinsurance for that tier. Some people might pay nothing for generic Vyvanse, while others might have much higher copays. The only way to know for sure is to check your prescription drug list.<\/span><\/p>\n

How to check whether your UnitedHealthcare plan covers Vyvanse\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n
