It has also been approved to reduce the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events in adults with established cardiovascular disease who are overweight or have obesity. Wegovy belongs to a class of drugs called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists, and it\u2019s injected under the skin once weekly. Some people may wonder if Wegovy causes anxiety, either directly or as a result of other side effects like low blood sugar. Here\u2019s what we know.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-wegovy-cause-anxiety\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can Wegovy cause anxiety?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, Wegovy may cause anxiety and other mental health side effects, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/depression-causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">depression<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, suicidal thoughts, and insomnia. However, some studies show that semaglutide (the active ingredient in Wegovy) may actually lower the risk of anxiety, especially in people with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/diabetes-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s a summary of research findings:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a 2024 study published in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/39424950\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientific Reports<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, people taking Wegovy had a 108% increased risk of experiencing anxiety compared to a control group.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.novo-pi.com\/wegovy.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy package insert<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says 4% of people taking Wegovy during clinical trials reported anxiety as a side effect. In contrast, 2% of people in the placebo group noticed an increase in anxiety.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/pharmacology\/articles\/10.3389\/fphar.2022.765446\/full\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2022 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that people with diabetes who take <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/glp-1-agonists\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLP-1 agonists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have a lower risk of developing anxiety.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epicresearch.org\/articles\/most-glp-1-medications-correlated-with-a-lower-likelihood-of-anxiety-and-depression-diagnoses\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2024 study by <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Epic Research<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, semaglutide was the only GLP-1 receptor agonist that lowered the risk of anxiety in nondiabetic patients when compared to non-GLP-1 receptor agonist weight loss medications.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More research is needed to figure out why some people experience worsening anxiety with Wegovy while others see an improvement in mental health.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"wegovy-anxiety-why-it-happens\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy anxiety: Why it happens<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety happens when we feel worried or fearful. It\u2019s completely normal to feel anxious every now and then, but chronic anxiety can interfere with everyday life. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/symptoms-of-depression-and-anxiety\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms of anxiety<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include unmanageable worry, tension, difficulty concentrating, irritability, and fatigue. Anxiety can also lead to panic attacks, which often cause a racing heartbeat, tremors, and a sense of impending doom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSometimes anxiety can be triggered by how the medication affects your body\u2014like changes in blood sugar, dehydration, or even just the stress of a new routine,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.poprecoverysystems.com\/dr-eric-smith\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eric Smith<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, DO, a bariatric surgeon and medical director at POP Recovery Systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/low-blood-sugar-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypoglycemia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (low blood sugar) could be one reason why Wegovy causes anxiety, especially if you\u2019re not eating enough due to other side effects like nausea. Eating food with a lot of added sugars and refined carbohydrates can also lead to blood sugar levels that fluctuate between extreme highs and lows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with Type 2 diabetes are also at risk of experiencing hypoglycemia when taking Wegovy. Wegovy helps the body release more insulin, and people with diabetes may experience low blood sugar if they produce (or receive by injection) too much insulin. However, semaglutide is prescribed for diabetes under the brand name <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ozempic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. So, if you\u2019re taking Wegovy and not Ozempic, you probably don\u2019t have diabetes. Still, talk to your doctor about this symptom to rule out any underlying causes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wegovy-vs-ozempic\/\"><b>Wegovy vs. Ozempic<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another idea is that Wegovy affects the level of dopamine in the brain. Dopamine affects mood and the freeze, fight, or flight response, among many other functions. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7687288\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2020 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> linked dopamine in the midbrain to heightened levels of anxiety, and an earlier <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.mit.edu\/2018\/dopamine-brain-vigilance-anxiety-1107\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MIT study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that a dopamine imbalance caused more paranoid behavior in rats. So, if Wegovy upsets your dopamine balance, you may feel more anxious and wary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, if you\u2019re dehydrated, you might feel dizzy, confused, and like your mouth is stuffed with cotton\u2014symptoms that overlap with those of anxiety. You might experience dehydration while taking Wegovy if the medication causes you to vomit or have diarrhea. Or, you may feel too nauseous to drink.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"who-is-most-likely-to-experience-anxiety-on-wegovy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who is most likely to experience anxiety on Wegovy?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the 2024 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientific Reports <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study, people who were female, Black, or under the age of 50 years were more likely to experience anxiety while taking Wegovy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"does-wegovy-anxiety-go-away\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does Wegovy anxiety go away?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most side effects of Wegovy <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/do-the-side-effects-of-wegovy-go-away\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tend to go away in a few weeks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, once the body gets used to the medication, but there isn\u2019t enough research to say whether anxiety is one of them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-to-do-about-wegovy-side-effects-like-anxiety\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What to do about Wegovy side effects like anxiety<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talk to your healthcare provider if you experience adverse effects of Wegovy, like anxiety. Both Dr. Smith and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/linear.health\/charles-sweet-md-mph\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Charles Sweet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a medical advisor at Linear Health, say healthcare providers may do the following to ease your anxiety symptoms:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Lower the <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wegovy-doses\/\"><b>dose of Wegovy<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your healthcare provider may have you return to the highest tolerable dose of Wegovy, which may be lower than the standard maintenance dose.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Increase doses more slowly<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This may give your body more time to adapt to Wegovy and decrease the risk of potential side effects.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Pause Wegovy altogether<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: This is a way to determine whether Wegovy truly is to blame for your anxiety symptoms.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your healthcare provider can also teach you self-regulating techniques to use when you feel anxious. Dr. Sweet recommends breathing exercises (such as resonant breathing), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/meditation-for-anxiety-and-depression\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meditation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and other mindfulness activities that promote relaxation. He also suggests sticking to a consistent sleep schedule, staying active, and watching your nutrition (not just calories) to keep anxiety at bay.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depending on the suspected cause of the anxiety (like dehydration or low blood sugar), your healthcare provider may also suggest some changes to your daily routine. Dr. Small says to eat small, balanced meals and drink plenty of water.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAlso, it\u2019s helpful to track your symptoms,\u201d he says. \u201cIf the anxiety started right after you began the medication or just after a dose increase, that can be a clue that it\u2019s related.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the benefits of Wegovy outweigh the risks of its side effects, your healthcare provider may suggest working with a mental health professional to better manage your anxiety symptoms. You can also discuss <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/resources\/anxiety\">prescription medications for anxiety<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"wegovy-alternatives\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy alternatives\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If Wegovy is causing you to feel anxious, your healthcare provider may prescribe a different GLP-1 receptor agonist, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zepbound\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zepbound<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (tirzepatide) or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/saxenda\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saxenda<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (liraglutide) for weight loss.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety is a possible side effect with all GLP-1 receptor agonists, but Dr. Smith says people may respond differently to each medication. \u201cIf one causes side effects like anxiety, switching to another might help.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Sweet agrees. \u201cThese medications work similarly, but they have their differences in regards to the ways the body absorbs them, so their individual side effects can vary,\u201d he adds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are pros and cons of each <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wegovy-alternatives\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy alternative<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so your healthcare provider will carefully consider your health history and risk factors before suggesting one. For example:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy offers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/wegovy-heart-disease-fda-approval\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cardiovascular benefits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zepbound targets a second hormone called glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) to promote weight loss.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saxenda is a daily injection that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/saxenda-vs-wegovy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may not be as effective for weight loss as Wegovy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few other GLP-1 agonists are also available, but they\u2019re currently only FDA approved to treat Type 2 diabetes, not for weight loss. Your healthcare provider can still write a prescription for these medications to help you lose weight, but your health insurance may not cover them for off-label use.
