Does <\/span>TRICARE cover Wegovy<\/span>?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Some \u2014 but not all \u2014 <\/span>TRICARE<\/span> plans cover <\/span>Wegovy<\/span> for <\/span>weight management<\/span>.<\/span> According to the <\/span>TRICARE<\/span> website<\/span><\/a>, coverage depends on whether your reason for taking <\/span>Wegovy<\/span> meets certain criteria and if you have a prescription from a licensed medical provider. TRICARE coverage of Wegovy typically requires<\/span> prior authorization<\/span><\/a> unless you are also taking other medications for diabetes management.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As of August 31, 2025, several <\/span>TRICARE plans<\/span><\/a> no longer cover Wegovy or other weight-loss drugs, even if you had an approved prior authorization before. Check the <\/span>TRICARE formulary<\/span><\/a> to see if Wegovy is covered under your plan.<\/span><\/p>\n

Reason for taking <\/span>Wegovy<\/span><\/h3>\n

With the same active ingredient as Ozempic \u2013 semaglutide \u2013 Wegovy<\/span> effectively lowers blood sugar. But as Wegovy, insurance plans typically only cover it for <\/span>weight loss<\/span>. This brand-name form of <\/span>semaglutide<\/span> is not approved for treating diabetes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, <\/span>semaglutide<\/span> injections, such as <\/span>Ozempic,<\/span> are <\/span>FDA-approved<\/span> for blood sugar control in <\/span>Type 2 diabetes<\/span>. <\/span>TRICARE<\/span> is much more likely to cover <\/span>Ozempic<\/span> for a person with obesity and <\/span>Type 2 diabetes<\/span>, though coverage still depends on the plan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Getting a prescription from a licensed provider<\/span><\/h3>\n

TRICARE coverage<\/span> for <\/span>Wegovy<\/span> also requires a prescription from a licensed <\/span>healthcare provider within the TRICARE network<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n
