Today, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fortification<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of vitamin D in breakfast <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cereals<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and milk continues to be a popular practice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For those suspected of having a deficiency, a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin D level<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be assessed through a blood test.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI often tell patients: If you feel run-down, achy, or just off, it\u2019s worth checking your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin D levels<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s a simple blood test that can offer major insight,\u201d explained Dr. Darji.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common test for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin D insufficiency<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is called a 25-hydroxyvitamin D, also known as 25(<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OH)D<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Institutes of Health<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, serum <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">concentrations<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 25(<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OH)D<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are reported in both nanomoles per liter (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nmol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\/L) and nanograms per milliliter (ng\/mL).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blood levels of 20 ng\/mL to 50 ng\/mL of 25(<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OH)D<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (vitamin D) are considered within the normal range for healthy individuals. When it comes to supplement use:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/VitaminD-HealthProfessional\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">analysis of data<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that 28% of individuals in the United States, ages two years and older, took a dietary supplement containing vitamin D.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For those taking the supplements, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin D intakes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ars.usda.gov\/ARSUserFiles\/80400530\/pdf\/1516\/Table_37_SUP_GEN_15.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ten times higher<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when compared to diet alone.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"why-is-vitamin-d-testing-and-supplementation-popular\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why is vitamin D testing and supplementation popular?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the past 10 to 20 years, vitamin D testing has become more common. It was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aafp.org\/pubs\/afp\/issues\/2018\/0215\/p254.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that vitamin D testing for Medicare patients was the fifth most common lab test ordered. That being said, routine supplementation has not been shown to decrease the rate of fractures or chronic diseases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As testing increases, more people are being identified with this condition, which has, in turn, increased the popularity of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin D supplements<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the increase in testing and more people being identified, the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Endocrine Society<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> only recommends routine <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin D supplementation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for children and teens, people who are pregnant or pre-diabetic, and adults over 75 years, but not for healthy adults ages 19 to 74. Additionally, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/VitaminD-HealthProfessional\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Academy of Pediatrics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommends Vitamin D drops for infants who are completely or partially breastfed, or who don\u2019t drink formula with Vitamin D supplementation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-effective-are-vitamin-d-supplements\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How effective are <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin D supplements<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When talking about <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin D supplements<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it\u2019s important to understand that there are two types of vitamin D available. Further studies are needed to support these claims.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you want to add more Vitamin D with supplements to support bone health, the suggested daily intake is<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28216084\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 400 to 800 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">international units<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (IU) <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for adults.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/38828931\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">panel of global experts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> doesn\u2019t recommend routine supplementation for healthy adults younger than 75. There are a few Medicaid plans in various states that will help cover over-the-counter <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/vitamin-d-without-insurance\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">costs for the supplements<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOver-the-counter supplements typically aren\u2019t covered, but if you need a prescription-strength dose due to a deficiency, some plans will cover it. While we don\u2019t know the exact figures, paying out of pocket is the more common scenario for patients purchasing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin D supplements<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"vitamin-d-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitamin D side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In general, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin D supplements<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are safe when taken at recommended doses. However, you can take too <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">much vitamin D<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When taken in larger doses, usually over 4,000 IU a day for a longer period of time, vitamin D can be harmful.
