It\u2019s especially helpful for dogs with kidney disease since it&#8217;s metabolized by the liver and only minimally excreted through the kidneys. This makes it safer than<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ibuprofen-for-dogs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NSAIDs for dogs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with kidney disease, Dr. Kong adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of the time, buprenorphine is administered by injection at your veterinary clinic or at an animal hospital, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thrivepetcare.com\/locations\/hawaii\/kahului\/central-maui-animal-clinic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Krista Hight, DVM<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, veterinarian at Central Maui Animal Clinic at Thrive Pet Healthcare, explains. It can also be administered orally at home, \u201cbut absorption is not as predictable in dogs and often has to be used at a higher dose for absorption to occur,\u201d Dr. Hight notes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In particular, buprenorphine is used to treat pain that happens after surgical procedures, such as after spays, orthopedic procedures, or dental extractions. In fact, it\u2019s commonly given along with an anesthetic during surgery. At times, buprenorphine is used to treat chronic conditions in dogs, including osteoarthritis and cancer-related discomfort, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/shop.welovedoodles.com\/pages\/experts?srsltid=AfmBOopIyqlQ0RmZfaJjFyCklipecQ5AT_JM-z3RX3fe3LHG1eewsqbS\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Kong<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-buprenorphine-safe-for-dogs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is buprenorphine safe for dogs?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most veterinarians agree that buprenorphine is safe for dogs. \u201cBuprenorphine is very safe for dogs,\u201d Dr. Hight says. \u201cSide effects are rare and usually consist of sedative effects.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, there isn\u2019t much data on the safety of buprenorphine in dogs, though many vets prescribe it confidently. One small study published in<\/span> the <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/jvp.13056\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutics<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> looked at the effects of buprenorphine in a sample of five dogs. For example, buprenorphine can cause increased central nervous system depression when mixed with another sedative like trazodone, gabapentin, or benzodiazepines. Usually, it\u2019s determined on a case-by-case basis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wondering what dose of buprenorphine is best for your dog? Additionally, some dogs develop constipation if they take it daily, and require frequent stool softeners, Dr. Kong adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"how-to-give-your-dog-buprenorphine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to give your dog buprenorphine<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Kong shared tips for giving your dog buprenorphine at home:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Administer oral buprenorphine by squirting it into your dog\u2019s cheek, not directly on their tongue; this ensures absorption.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you miss a dose, give it as soon as you remember unless the next dose is due within two hours.
