Here, we\u2019ll take a closer look at Mounjaro\u2019s side effects and what you can do to prevent them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mounjaro-dosage-overview\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mounjaro dosage overview<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, the best way to minimize Mounjaro side effects is to gradually increase the dose. Most of these side effects are gastrointestinal in nature. \u201cThe most common side effects are what I call \u2018gut talk.\u2019 My patients have mainly nausea, diarrhea, decreased appetite, occasional vomiting, and constipation,\u201d Dr. La Puma says. \u201cThey&#8217;re the typical offenders when you&#8217;re starting this class of medication because your system is acclimating to the way the drug is working.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RELATED: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/zepbound-vs-mounjaro\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zepbound vs. Mounjaro<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research backs this up. A<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10614464\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2023 study published in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cureus<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that GI side effects were the most common type experienced by people taking tirzepatide, the active ingredient in Mounjaro. For example, 20.43% of people taking it experienced nausea, 9.05% experienced vomiting, and 2.54% had constipation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notably, as Sorensen underscores, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/mounjaro-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mounjaro side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tend to get better as your body adjusts to the medication. \u201cThe body tends to get used to Mounjaro over time, and side effects generally become less significant and even go away with time,\u201d she says, stressing the importance of starting at the lowest dose and increasing gradually, and only if medically necessary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One long-term side effect of Mounjaro is reduced appetite, although patients\u2019 appetites are likely to increase once they stop the medication. Tirzepatide, the active ingredient in Mounjaro, was FDA approved for weight loss as brand-name <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zepbound\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zepbound<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. At this dose, \u201cyou might notice slight nausea or minor changes in bowel habits,\u201d Kariniemi says.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>5 mg:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMany people see a noticeable increase in side effects here,\u201d Kariniemi shares. For instance, nausea often becomes more pronounced, along with more stomach pain, diarrhea, or constipation. This is also when appetite suppression becomes more prominent, according to Kariniemi.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>7.5\u201310 mg:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cAt these doses, digestive side effects can be more persistent,\u201d explains Kariniemi. \u201cNausea might linger for days after an injection, and managing bowel changes is common.\u201d She says you may also experience increased tiredness.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>12.5\u201315 mg: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s at these higher doses that you may see more robust side effects. \u201cNausea, vomiting, and significant appetite and digestion changes are common,\u201d Kariniemi says. \u201cManaging these side effects often becomes a key focus, and some may need to adjust their dose if issues are too disruptive.\u201d Weight loss is highest at 15 mg weekly.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These side effects don\u2019t happen to everyone. And even if you do experience side effects, they may be mild and may resolve spontaneously, without treatment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGenerally, mild to moderate digestive issues are most noticeable 24\u201372 hours after an injection, especially when starting or increasing your dose,\u201d Kariniemi says. \u201cFor many, these effects improve or resolve within a few weeks as their body adapts.\u201d Still, some people experience side effects that last longer than this. \u201cAlways discuss prolonged or bothersome side effects with your provider,\u201d Kariniemi stresses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/mounjaro-long-term-side-effects\/\"><b>Mounjaro long-term side effects<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mounjaro-missed-dose-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mounjaro missed dose side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you miss a dose of Mounjaro, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mounjaro.lilly.com\/how-to-use-mounjaro\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">take the dose as soon as possible<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but only if less than 96 hours (four days) have passed since you were supposed to have taken it. If more than four days have passed, wait until your next scheduled dose day to take it. Never take two doses of Mounjaro within three days of each other.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The chances of experiencing adverse side effects from one missed dose of Mounjaro are slim, but you may notice more gastrointestinal discomfort <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uclahealth.org\/news\/article\/missed-dose-or-more-your-glp-1-medication-heres-what-do\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">after missing two doses of Mounjaro<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014especially if you resume it at the same dose instead of a lower one. It\u2019s best to ask your healthcare provider about what to do if you miss any doses of Mounjaro, since they can assess whether you should resume treatment at the regularly scheduled dosage and help you manage adverse side effects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-manage-mounjaro-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to manage Mounjaro side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are experiencing bothersome Mounjaro effects, you might want to know how to minimize these effects so that you can stay on the medication more comfortably. The best way to reduce your risk of side effects is to only take the dosage you\u2019re prescribed. \u201cStarting at a low dose and titrating up under competent medical supervision reduces the risk of significant side effects,\u201d Sorensen says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Likewise, there are lifestyle modifications you can make to reduce the impact that Mounjaro has on you. You can start with dietary modifications. Here are Sorensen\u2019s suggestions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drink lots of water (a minimum of 64 oz of water per day, ideally more).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stick to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/mounjaro-diet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clean diet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, avoiding overly heavy or greasy foods, or foods high in sugar or carbs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep your meals smaller, and stop eating at the first sign of fullness.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. La Puma offers some additional lifestyle suggestions for minimizing side effects, based on the specific side effects you are having. Here\u2019s what to know:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>For nausea or vomiting:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Eat small, low-fat meals, drink ginger tea, and use over-the-counter (OTC) anti-nausea meds.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>For diarrhea<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Consume sugar-free electrolyte drinks and avoid spicy foods.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>For constipation:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Add fiber (fruits, vegetables, psyllium) to your diet. As a last resort,\u00a0 use OTC laxatives such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/bisacodyl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bisacodyl<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/senna\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Senna<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, no more than twice weekly.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Injection site reactions:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Change injection sites, use ice to relieve pain and swelling, and use mild steroid cream before and after the injection.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"when-to-contact-your-healthcare-provider\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When to contact your healthcare provider<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although most side effects from Mounjaro are manageable and don\u2019t require emergency medical attention, there are certain symptoms that are more serious, or even life-threatening. Kariniemi recommends you contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe, persistent abdominal pain, which could indicate<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/pancreatitis-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pancreatitis<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Signs of severe dehydration, such as dizziness, feeling faint, or reduced urination<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms of low blood sugar, like shakiness or confusion, especially if you have diabetes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Signs of an allergic reaction (anaphylaxis), including swelling of the face or throat, or trouble breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changes in vision<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any severe or disruptive side effects<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For most individuals, Mounjaro&#8217;s side effects are manageable and get better as the body adjusts to the medication.
