There\u2019s a small chance your Vyvanse coverage ended due to a clinical or administrative error. Insurance companies may deny coverage for a drug if they think you no longer need it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But in many cases, it\u2019s all about cost. \u201cSometimes it’s just a formulary change\u2014not based on your clinical need but on internal pricing decisions,\u201d says <\/span>Ritu Goel<\/span><\/a>, MD, a board-certified child, adolescent, and adult integrative psychiatrist at Mind Claire in Los Angeles. \u201cInsurance plans may also drop the brand-name version when a generic becomes available to cut expenses.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Sure enough, the <\/span>generic version of Vyvanse<\/span><\/a> was <\/span>approved by the FDA<\/span><\/a> in August 2023. As more pharmaceutical companies begin manufacturing the drug, it becomes cheaper and easier to source.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sometimes insurance companies think both the name-brand and generic versions of a prescription drug are too expensive compared to alternatives, and they\u2019ll remove both from the formulary. Make sure you review your insurance policy\u2019s formulary every year during the open enrollment period to verify coverage for all your medications. Consider switching to another health plan if your current one stops covering your medications.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How much is Vyvanse without insurance?<\/span><\/h2>\n

The average out-of-pocket <\/span>cost of Vyvanse without insurance<\/span><\/a> is $550 for 30, 30 mg capsules. In comparison, generic lisdexamfetamine dimesylate costs about $443 for the same dosage without insurance or coupons.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What to do if your insurance won\u2019t cover Vyvanse<\/span><\/h2>\n

If your insurance stopped covering Vyvanse, you should immediately make two phone calls: one to the insurance company and one to your healthcare provider. Here\u2019s what to ask.<\/span><\/p>\n

Either way, it\u2019s important to follow their guidance in order to avoid <\/span>Vyvanse withdrawal symptoms<\/span><\/a>. <\/span>Like many other stimulants, Vyvanse may cause uncomfortable side effects when it\u2019s stopped cold turkey. Although side effects aren\u2019t severe, Dr. Goel says stopping Vyvanse abruptly can leave people feeling more tired, hungrier, and less focused for a few days.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Anoop Singh<\/span><\/a>, MD, a board-certified psychiatrist and regional director at Mindpath Health,\u00a0 agrees that Vyvanse is unlikely to cause severe withdrawal symptoms when it\u2019s been taken as prescribed. \u201cSome patients may be at a higher risk due to individual health factors. In most such cases, symptoms are mild and self-resolving; however, it may be safest for\u00a0 those on a higher dose or with certain medical risk factors to gradually reduce their medication dose over a few days.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Singh says severe Vyvanse withdrawal symptoms are more likely to occur when people have taken far too much of the drug for an extended period of time. \u201cIndividuals experiencing acute amphetamine withdrawal will likely start experiencing symptoms 36 to 48 hours after stopping Vyvanse, and these could last up to two to three weeks or longer, but the severity and duration of symptoms can vary widely.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Affordable alternatives to Vyvanse<\/span><\/h2>\n

If your insurance still won\u2019t cover Vyvanse after the appeals process, your healthcare provider may recommend a <\/span>Vyvanse alternative<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cGeneric <\/span>lisdexamfetamine<\/span><\/a> is probably the most appropriate alternative option, given that it contains the same medication but with significantly lower cost,\u201d Dr. Singh says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He explains that generic medications are just as safe and effective as name-brand drugs, despite being far more affordable. \u201cGeneric drug manufacturers can bring their products to market more quickly and at a significantly lower cost because the original brand-name drug has already been approved by the FDA. Since they don\u2019t have to repeat the same research, generics are usually much cheaper.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

If you need to switch to a completely different medication, Dr. Goel says there are both <\/span>stimulant<\/span><\/a> and non-stimulant medications approved to treat ADHD. Stimulant alternatives include <\/span>Adderall<\/span><\/a> (amphetamine-dextroamphetamine), <\/span>Concerta<\/span><\/a> (methylphenidate extended-release), <\/span>Focalin<\/span><\/a> (dexmethylphenidate), and <\/span>Ritalin<\/span><\/a> (methylphenidate), while non-stimulants include <\/span>atomoxetine<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>Intuniv<\/span><\/a> (guanfacine ER). These medications (or their generics) may be covered by your insurance even if Vyvanse isn\u2019t.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSome people find Vyvanse smoother or long acting, but alternatives can be just as effective with the correct dose. It\u2019s all about what works for you,\u201d Dr. Goel says.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
