You may be able to get coverage for Gemtesa through commercial or private insurance, <\/span>Medicare<\/span><\/a>, or <\/span>Medicaid<\/span><\/a> if the drug is included in the plan\u2019s <\/span>formulary<\/span><\/a>, a list of preferred and covered drugs. That said, coverage varies by plan.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cSince it is a newer and higher-costing medication, many insurance companies, and often Medicaid and Medicare, require treatment with more cost-effective options first,\u201d says <\/span>JaLorean Hayes<\/span><\/a>, a registered nurse, public health consultant, and founder of Hayes Global Health Strategies. Some health plans also require <\/span>prior authorization<\/span><\/a> before covering Gemtesa, meaning that the prescribing healthcare provider must provide evidence that the drug is the most suitable for use.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How to save money on Gemtesa<\/span><\/h2>\n

If you do not have insurance or your insurance doesn\u2019t cover Gemtesa, there are still ways to lower your out-of-pocket drug costs. Here are some ways to save on Gemtesa.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cPatients can shop around online utilizing pharmacy discount cards to see where they can fill their prescription for less,\u201d says Hayes. For instance, cash payers can lower the out-of-pocket cost of Gemtesa to as little as $427 for 30, 75 mg tablets<\/a> with a <\/span>SingleCare Prescription Discount Card<\/span><\/a> or <\/span>coupons<\/span><\/a>. That\u2019s more than $200 less than the retail price.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To access these discounts, visit the <\/span>SingleCare website<\/span><\/a> and type the name of your prescription. You\u2019ll then be able to compare the prices at <\/span>local pharmacies<\/span><\/a> and choose where you want your healthcare provider to send your prescription. Click \u201cGet free coupon\u201d to have the Gemtesa coupon emailed or texted to you, and present your coupon to the pharmacy staff when you\u2019re ready to pay. Keep in mind that prices vary by quantity, strength, form, and pharmacy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Medicare Extra Help<\/span><\/h3>\n

Current Medicare Part D beneficiaries may be eligible for the <\/span>Extra Help program<\/span><\/a>, also known as the Low-Income Subsidy (LIS). This financial assistance program helps people with limited resources pay copays, premiums, deductibles, and medications.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Sumitomo Pharma Gemtesa savings card<\/span><\/h3>\n

\u201cIf my patient is struggling to pay for Gemtesa, I recommend getting in contact with the pharmaceutical company,\u201d Hayes says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Gemtesa is made by a drug company called Sumitomo Pharma Co., Ltd., which is offering the GEMTESA Simple Savings Card through 2025 to patients who meet specific eligibility criteria. However, you need commercial health insurance to be eligible; there is a maximum savings limit per fill; and people with Medicare, Medicaid, or other federal or state programs are ineligible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

4. Bulk-order medication<\/span><\/h3>\n

Sometimes, patients can get Gemtesa at a lower price by ordering it in bulk. If your insurance company approves this, ask your healthcare provider to submit a Gemtesa prescription for a 90-day supply instead of a 30-day supply.<\/span><\/p>\n

Is there a cheaper alternative to Gemtesa?<\/span><\/h2>\n

A Gemtesa prescription isn\u2019t your only option for treating urinary incontinence or other OAB symptoms. There are<\/span> Gemtesa alternatives<\/span><\/a> that your healthcare provider may recommend that could be cheaper. For instance, Dr. Sparacino often points her patients to<\/span> Myrbetriq<\/span><\/a> (<\/span>mirabegron<\/span><\/a>), another<\/span> beta agonist<\/span><\/a> that is <\/span>FDA approved to treat OAB<\/span><\/a>. However, Myrbetriq is also a brand-name drug, so whether it is cheaper than Gemtesa depends on insurance coverage. Your prescription drug plan may cover generic <\/span>mirabegron ER<\/span><\/a> instead.<\/span><\/p>\n

For other OAB drugs with lower retail prices, Dr. Sparacino points patients to generic antimuscarinic medications such as<\/span> oxybutynin<\/span><\/a> or<\/span> tolterodine<\/span><\/a>. <\/span>\u201cWhile these work through a different mechanism, they are also effective in reducing bladder overactivity for many patients,\u201d she explains. <\/span>Solifenacin<\/span><\/a> is another generic antimuscarinic for OAB.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
