That\u2019s because insurers sometimes consider weight management cosmetic in nature rather than a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/content.naic.org\/sites\/default\/files\/consumer-health-insurance-what-is-medical-necessity.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medical necessity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, even though the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ama-assn.org\/system\/files\/a23-224.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Medical Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> considers obesity a chronic disease.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"medication-exclusions-are-becoming-more-common\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medication exclusions are becoming more common<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The number of formulary exclusions has risen steadily over the last decade. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.xcenda.com\/-\/media\/assets\/xcenda\/english\/content-assets\/white-papers-issue-briefs-studies-pdf\/xcenda_pbm_exclusion_may_2022.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study by Xcenda<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that only about 40 diabetes, weight loss, endocrine, and metabolic drugs had been excluded from at least one pharmacy benefit manager (PBM) formulary in 2014. By 2022, that number had jumped to 179.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-to-do-if-your-insurance-won-t-cover-your-glp-1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What to do if your insurance won\u2019t cover your GLP-1<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If insurance stopped covering your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/glp-1-agonists\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLP-1 medication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, do the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-contact-your-insurance-company\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Talk to your healthcare provider about appealing the insurance company\u2019s decision.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insurance companies may make exceptions on a case-by-case basis, but they\u2019ll need to review some documentation from your healthcare provider.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe provider needs to clarify what medical condition(s) or purpose the GLP-1 drug is intended to treat, why it is medically necessary and others aren\u2019t appropriate, any prior failed treatments, and include additional documentation like clinical notes,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastxwestmed.com\/#about\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michaela Robbins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a doctor of nursing practice (DNP) at East x West Med in New York City.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThanks to new technology that streamlines the prior authorization and appeal process, the process can take minutes, but the response rate from insurance companies to review the appeal and decide can vary from hours to days,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/obesitymedicine.org\/resources\/speakers-bureau\/angela-fitch\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Angela Fitch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, who is board-certified in obesity medicine and previously served as the president of the Obesity Medicine Association, says the appeals process can take hours without that streamlined technology. \u201cIt&#8217;s a lot of time that isn&#8217;t compensated, and many clinics do not have time or resources to do it.\u201d She warns that decisions can take months to arrive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because it can take a while to hear back from the insurance company, contact your healthcare provider as soon as you learn about the dropped drug coverage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/does-aetna-cover-zepbound\/\"><b>Does Aetna cover Zepbound?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-don-t-suddenly-stop-taking-your-glp-1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3.
