They are typically recommended along with lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may have heard that statins can affect women and men a bit differently\u2014some studies have found that there are slight variations in how the drugs work and their side effects between the sexes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"why-women-may-need-a-different-approach-to-statins\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why women may need a different approach to statins<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicine is typically not a \u201cone-size-fits-all\u201d approach, and women may need a different approach to statins than men do. Some of the reasons include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Hormonal changes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Women\u2019s hormone levels, notably estrogen, change a lot\u2014especially after <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/menopause-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">menopause<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You should not breastfeed if you are taking a statin\u2014you can talk with your healthcare provider about the best alternative, which may be temporarily stopping your statin, or continuing your statin and feeding your baby formula.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Drug metabolism<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: How the body <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.contemporaryobgyn.net\/view\/statin-use-in-midlife-women\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metabolizes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or processes, a drug is also a consideration. Some people, especially women, may have genetic differences that affect how statins are absorbed and broken down. Based on how a drug is metabolized, side effects (especially muscle pains) may be more or less likely.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Clinical trials<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Many drugs, including statins, were studied primarily in men. Women who are candidates for a statin are typically <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahajournals.org\/doi\/10.1161\/CIRCOUTCOMES.118.005562\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">less likely<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than men to be treated with one. And women who do take statins are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27696318\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more likely to stop<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> taking them, according to research.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite these considerations, statins can be very effective for women who need them\u2014they lower cholesterol (including LDL cholesterol and triglycerides) while increasing high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL cholesterol), helping reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"top-recommended-statins-for-women\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Top recommended statins for women<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Statins work by blocking an enzyme (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HMG CoA reductase) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">needed to make cholesterol, helping to lower LDL cholesterol. This helps reduce inflammation and cholesterol buildup in the arteries, which helps reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke. Only your healthcare provider can determine the best treatment for you. That\u2019s because everyone has individual considerations that must be taken into account to find the most suitable treatment. However, some statins may be recommended more often for women.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, while higher doses may lead to better results in terms of cholesterol, one small study published in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8654793\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bone Reports<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that higher statin doses were linked to lower bone mineral density. The study suggested that using lower statin doses, when possible, may help preserve bone density and reduce the risk of fractures and related complications. Women who may be more prone to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.contemporaryobgyn.net\/view\/statin-use-in-midlife-women\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">muscle-related side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> might benefit from lower doses. A clinical trial called <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4741209\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">STELLAR<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> trial looked at various statins in women with high cholesterol. In this trial, women who took atorvastatin 10 mg daily for six weeks had a 39% reduction in LDL cholesterol. Those who took <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-is-considered-a-high-dose-of-atorvastatin\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">higher doses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had better results\u2014a 47% reduction in LDL cholesterol in women who took 40 mg, and a 51% reduction in those who took 80 mg.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"crestor-rosuvastatin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crestor (rosuvastatin)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crestor (rosuvastatin) is available in both brand and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/crestor-generic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">generic forms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in 5 mg, 10 mg, 20 mg, and 40 mg doses. In the STELLAR trial, women who took Crestor (rosuvastatin) 10 mg had a 49% reduction in LDL cholesterol. Those who took 20 mg lowered their LDL cholesterol by 53%, and those who took 40 mg had a 57% reduction in LDL cholesterol. Additionally, women who took rosuvastatin had greater increases in HDL cholesterol (the good type of cholesterol) than those who took other statins.
