Holt, Pharm.D.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ssistant professor of pharmacology at<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcom.edu\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PCOM (Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, Plavix is approved to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/blood-clot-causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prevent clots<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and support healthy blood flow after a heart attack or ischemic stroke. Healthcare providers also prescribe it off-label with aspirin after a stent is placed in the heart. \u201cPlavix is often prescribed after a patient has received a \u2018stent\u2019 in one of their coronary arteries, and Plavix can help prevent blood from clotting around the stent,\u201d Dr. Holt explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, warfarin is typically prescribed to prevent or treat blood clots in conditions like venous thromboembolism, which includes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/deep-vein-thrombosis-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deep vein thrombosis (DVT)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/pulmonary-embolism-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pulmonary embolism (PE)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cThese clots are not generally caused by excess platelet activation but are caused by the tendency for blood to congeal, or \u2018coagulate,\u2019 when it is either moving very slowly, or not at all, in a large vein,\u201d Dr. Holt describes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people may do better on Plavix, while others respond more effectively to warfarin. The latter needs <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/new-blood-thinners\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more monitoring<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but it may be the right choice depending on what\u2019s being treated. Always consult a healthcare provider for a treatment plan that can give you the best results.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"how-long-does-it-take-for-plavix-and-warfarin-to-work\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long does it take for Plavix and warfarin to work?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Something else to consider is that each medication has a different timeline when it comes to how quickly its therapeutic effects occur, says<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medicine.yale.edu\/profile\/joyce-oen-hsiao\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joyce Oen-Hsiao, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an associate professor of medicine at Yale School of Medicine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/plavix\/dosage\">Plavix is taken once per day<\/a>, and blood-thinning effects usually occur within four to 24 hours of starting the medication, according to Dr. Oen-Hsiao. But warfarin takes a little longer to thin the blood, usually not taking effect until three days after the initial dose, Dr. Oen-Hsiao says. If you\u2019re taking warfarin, sometimes you need to be put on another blood thinner like<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/heparin-sodium-porcine\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heparin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/enoxaparin-sodium\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enoxaparin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when you first start taking warfarin, until the warfarin begins to take full effect, she adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"plavix-vs-warfarin-insurance-coverage-and-cost-comparison\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plavix vs. warfarin: Insurance coverage and cost comparison<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re wondering about insurance coverage for Plavix or warfarin, there\u2019s good news.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMost insurances, including Medicare and Medicaid, cover antiplatelet agents such as Plavix and anticoagulants such as warfarin,\u201d says<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/hosam-sam-hmoud-m-d-81aab842\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hmoud Hosam, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a cardiologist fellow at<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lenoxhill.northwell.edu\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Northwell\u2019s Lenox Hill Hospital<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cBecause warfarin has been available for decades, it&#8217;s known to be a cheap and economical alternative should a patient have difficulty affording newer anticoagulant agents.\u201d Of course, insurance coverage isn\u2019t guaranteed, and there may be copayments or coinsurance payments that have to be met, depending on your insurance plan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plavix and warfarin are both available as generic medications, which makes them both relatively accessible. Without insurance, Plavix usually costs about $640 for a 30-day supply of 75 mg tablets. His recommendation? \u201cTaking fall risk precautions or being cautious with activities that could predispose one to falls is crucial,\u201d Dr. Sathyamoorthy says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, even for bleeding, the medications can differ in terms of risk. \u201cWarfarin carries a higher risk of bleeding than Plavix, and, additionally, warfarin therapy has to be monitored by way of finger sticks or occasional blood draws to ensure that the risk of bleeding is not dangerously high,\u201d Dr. Holt says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides an increased risk of bleeding, other<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK470313\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">warfarin side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nausea, vomiting, bloating, stomach pain, gas, and changes to your sense of taste<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In addition to bleeding, Plavix may also cause other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/plavix-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including itching, diarrhea, stomach pain, and indigestion.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"plavix-and-warfarin-drug-interactions-and-warnings\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plavix and warfarin drug interactions and warnings<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As blood thinners, Plavix and warfarin can interact with other drugs that have blood-thinning effects. These include other anticoagulants, antiplatelet medications, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/nsaids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and some antidepressants, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/ssris\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/clopidogrel-interactions\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plavix interactions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, certain medications may decrease the effectiveness of Plavix, including<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/proton-pump-inhibitors\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">proton pump inhibitors (PPIs)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/calcium-channel-blockers\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">calcium channel blockers (CCBs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). However, warfarin generally has more drug interactions than Plavix. For example, warfarin can interact with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2017\/009218s118lbl.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">various antibiotics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, antifungal drugs, herbal supplements, and other products that can either increase the risk of bleeding or make warfarin less effective at preventing clots.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the benefits of taking warfarin or Plavix generally outweigh the risks, there are very few groups of people who should avoid taking these medications if they\u2019re needed, Dr. Holt says. Both Plavix and warfarin shouldn\u2019t be taken if you are pregnant, and you should ask your provider about the safety of these medications while breastfeeding. Additionally, \u201cpatients with a low platelet count at baseline should either avoid these medications or be monitored by their physician meticulously,\u201d Dr. Hold advises.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"plavix-and-warfarin-food-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plavix and warfarin food interactions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Plavix doesn\u2019t generally have food restrictions, warfarin can interact poorly with foods that you may be eating. \u201cWarfarin interacts with foods high in vitamin K, especially green, leafy vegetables, such as kale, spinach, mustard greens, asparagus, and broccoli,\u201d Dr. Oen-Hsiao says. But this doesn\u2019t mean you have to avoid these foods entirely.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn the past, patients were told to avoid all green leafy vegetables; however, now we encourage patients to be consistent with how many vegetables they eat weekly,\u201d Dr. Oen-Hsiao explains. Sometimes, the warfarin dosage is adjusted based on your dietary pattern, Dr. Oen-Hsiao adds.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We all have different health issues and specific patient needs.
