The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">risk of bleeding<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> depends on the condition being treated, other medical conditions, and medications that may interact. However, it can take days before platelets begin to clot normally again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIts blood-thinning effects can last up to a week after stopping the medication,\u201d Dr. Alexander-El says. \u201cThat\u2019s why I always remind patients that even routine procedures, like a dental cleaning or tooth extraction, can lead to unexpected bleeding if their provider doesn\u2019t know they\u2019re taking it. Something that feels small can turn into an emergency room visit if the patient isn\u2019t aware of the medication\u2019s lingering effects.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"precautions-while-taking-plavix\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Precautions while taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plavix<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are several steps older adults can take to reduce their risk of increased bleeding and other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plavix<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"follow-dosage-instructions\"><span style=\"font-weight: One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC3761015\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that grapefruit juice inhibited the platelet aggregation of 300 milligrams (mg) of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clopidogrel<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by 23%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few other things to keep in mind before taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plavix<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Bleeding problems: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re actively bleeding or have a bleeding disorder, such as hemophilia or von Willebrand disease, please consult your healthcare provider for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medical advice<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plavix<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Other medical conditions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Let your healthcare provider know if you have a history of stomach problems or eye disease, which may put you at <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased risk of bleeding<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Surgery: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antiplatelet drug<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stops your body from making <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood clots<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it could cause complications during surgery, as you need <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood clots<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to prevent excessive bleeding. Your surgeon may request that you discontinue <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plavix<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> five days before treatment.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Allergic reaction<\/b><b>:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If you\u2019ve had a previous <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergic reaction<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plavix<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or its ingredients, your healthcare provider will likely not prescribe it.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Supplements<\/b><b>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dietary <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supplements<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as omega-3 fatty acids (sold as fish oil capsules), can inhibit platelet activity.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"keep-a-medication-list-on-hand\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep a medication list on hand<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI remind my patients to make sure they bring an updated medication list to each appointment,\u201d Armendariz says. \u201cI also encourage my patients to go to the same pharmacy for all of their medication. This makes it easier for the pharmacist to keep track of all<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medications the patient is on, and to monitor for possible interactions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can create a handwritten list or use your notes app to keep track of your medications. The U.S. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food and Drug Administration<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) offers a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/files\/about%20fda\/published\/My-Medicine-Record-%28PDF%29-%2A%2ANote--For-best-form-functionality--Right-click-3664-link-and-click-Save-Link-As%E2%80%A6-to-save-to-your-desktop-and-then-open-the-file.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">free medicine record sheet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you can complete on a computer or tablet and print out to share with your healthcare provider and pharmacist.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"notify-your-healthcare-provider-before-stopping-medication\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notify your healthcare provider before stopping medication<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While stopping <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plavix<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> immediately doesn\u2019t immediately cause any adverse effects, you should follow your healthcare provider\u2019s instructions on when and how to complete the medication safely. \u201cIf a patient is having surgery or dental work, it is very important that the patient notifies their healthcare team so the medication can be stopped prior to the procedure,\u201d Armendariz says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"make-your-home-safer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make your home safer<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because older adults are more susceptible to falls while taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plavix<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, preparing your home before treatment can help keep you safe. \u201cI talk to my patients often about safe proofing their home when it comes to falls,\u201d Armendariz says. \u201cFor instance, I advise them to try to get rid of throw rugs because those are a tripping hazard.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nia.nih.gov\/health\/falls-and-falls-prevention\/preventing-falls-home-room-room\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tips for safe-proofing your home<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keeping areas with high foot traffic tidy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adding grab bars near toilets and on both the inside and outside of your tub and shower.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Placing nightlights close to your bed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cleaning up spills as soon as possible.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adding non-slip material to indoor and outdoor stairways.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keeping electrical cords near walls and away from walking paths.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep a list of emergency numbers nearby or saved in your phone.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider an assistive walking device like a cane or walker if you\u2019re unsteady on your feet.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"avoid-or-limit-alcohol-consumption\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid or limit alcohol consumption<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clopidogrel<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and alcohol can increase your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">risk of serious bleeding<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
