Although many supplement manufacturers have their products tested for quality and safety by third parties, this isn\u2019t a required step before selling them to consumers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That means the supplements you take could contain unlisted ingredients or different amounts of active ingredients than what\u2019s indicated on the label. It also means they haven\u2019t been studied as carefully as prescription drugs, so we don\u2019t know exactly how much people should take for their health. In general, most supplements appear to be safe to combine with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/rosuvastatin-calcium\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rosuvastatin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but there are some exceptions. To note, these interactions can occur with other statin medications such as Lipitor (atorvastatin) and Zocor (simvastatin), so seek medical advice from a healthcare professional before taking any supplements if you\u2019re on this class of medication.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"niacin-b3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Niacin (B3)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Niacin is a B vitamin that has been shown to lower triglyceride levels and raise HDL cholesterol. Many people try taking niacin instead of or in addition to prescription cholesterol-lowering medications, but it\u2019s considered unsafe to combine with rosuvastatin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy general take on niacin is that there are more harms than benefits with this supplement,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.memorialcare.org\/providers\/yu-ming-ni\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yu-Ming Ni<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, cardiologist and lipidologist at MemorialCare Heart and Vascular Institute at Orange Coast Medical Center in California.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although niacin does affect cholesterol levels in a positive way, Dr. Ni says it\u2019s never been shown in large studies to improve a person\u2019s risk for heart disease or lower their risk of dying from cardiovascular causes. On top of that, he adds, it has some significant side effects, including flushing, dizziness, and increased risk for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/diabetes-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It may also increase your risk for muscle pain and a rare type of muscle damage called rhabdomyolysis, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.summithealth.com\/doctors\/provider\/1851448492\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jack Cappitelli<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, internist and chief medical officer, New Jersey Region, of Summit Health. People taking statins already have a higher risk of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/379\/bmj.o2939\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">muscular symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; adding niacin to the mix can increase the chances of this side effect even more.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"red-yeast-rice\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Red yeast rice\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nccih.nih.gov\/health\/red-yeast-rice\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Red yeast rice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a natural supplement made from a fungus called<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Monascus purpureus.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It contains a compound, monacolin K, that is chemically identical to another statin (lovastatin). This gives red yeast rice its reputation as a \u201cnatural statin,\u201d says Dr. Cappitelli, but while it has positive effects on cholesterol, you should never combine red yeast rice with any statins.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking it along with your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/rosuvastatin-calcium\/dosage\">dose of rosuvastatin<\/a> can increase your risk for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/drugs-supplements-red-yeast-rice\/art-20363074\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">statin-related side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like muscle pain, liver problems, kidney problems, and gastrointestinal distress, including stomach pain, heartburn, and gas.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"st-john-s-wort\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">St. John\u2019s wort\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Statin drugs are metabolized by the liver, says Dr. Ni, so it\u2019s important not to mix them with medications or supplements that affect the enzymes responsible for this metabolization.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/drugs-supplements-st-johns-wort\/art-20362212\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">St. John\u2019s wort<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for example\u2014an herbal supplement often taken as a way to naturally relieve insomnia, anxiety, and menopause symptoms\u2014is well-known to inhibit enzymes in the CYP family, which helps metabolize statins. St. John\u2019s wort interacts with many different prescription and OTC medications, and at least one study suggests that it could cause your body to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amjmed.com\/article\/S0002-9343(08)00974-1\/fulltext\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clear rosuvastatin too quickly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from your system, limiting the medication\u2019s ability to lower your cholesterol levels.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"magnesium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Magnesium\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In general, people taking rosuvastatin can also take magnesium, but you should always talk about it with your healthcare provider first. Rosuvastatin shouldn\u2019t be taken at the same time as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/18355422\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">certain antacids<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for example, like those containing aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide. This could affect how well rosuvastatin is absorbed and make it less effective. Instead, take your statin at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after taking these types of antacids.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Otherwise, magnesium is likely safe to combine with rosuvastatin. In fact, Dr. Ni says she sometimes recommends magnesium to her rosuvastatin patients if they are having trouble sleeping, since <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/best-magnesium-for-sleep\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the supplement can work as a natural sleep aid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"vitamin-d\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitamin D<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similar to magnesium, most people can safely take normal amounts of vitamin D with rosuvastatin. In fact, some studies show <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5234488\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that vitamin D<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> raises HDL cholesterol levels and decreases LDL cholesterol levels, potentially making the supplement beneficial to people with high cholesterol. However, these results are strongly debated, and the evidence for\u2014and against\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/VitaminD-HealthProfessional\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin D\u2019s role<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in lowering cholesterol is mixed.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That wouldn\u2019t matter if rosuvastatin and vitamin D didn\u2019t interact at all, but there\u2019s some evidence that statin-related side effects like muscle pain are higher when the medication is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2214623716300503\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">combined with vitamin D<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. There are some supplements that are not only safe to combine with statins but also potentially beneficial for people with high cholesterol. However, both Drs. Cappitelli and Ni say there are no supplements that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">need <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to be taken with statins, and all of them need your provider\u2019s stamp of approval first.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some supplements that may help you manage your high cholesterol alongside a statin include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Some people find that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/best-time-to-take-coq10\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CoQ10<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> supplements reduce the muscle-related symptoms of taking statins, but Dr. Ni says it\u2019s hard to predict who will benefit from CoQ10. He adds that many people feel better after adjusting to their statin, so he often recommends his patients take it every other day at first if they\u2019re experiencing muscle pain and skip the CoQ10.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Omega-3 fatty acids:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Dr. Cappitelli says<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/omega-3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">omega-3 fatty acids<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are a safe addition to your diet, especially if your HDL is low and your triglycerides are high. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/fish-oil-benefits-for-women\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Omega-3s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can lower triglyceride levels and decrease your risk of a heart attack.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Vitamin K2:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Some animal studies show that this vitamin slows down the build-up of plaque in the arteries, Dr. Ni says, but that hasn\u2019t been supported by human studies yet. \u201cIf my patient insists on taking vitamin K2 alongside their statin, I am fine with that,\u201d he adds, \u201cbut I don&#8217;t routinely recommend it.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though some of these supplements could be beneficial when taken with your statin, we still recommend getting your provider\u2019s approval beforehand.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-bottom-line\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bottom line<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking certain supplements with rosuvastatin can decrease how well the medication works for you or increase your risk of statin-related side effects, especially muscle pain. You should generally avoid niacin (B3), red yeast rice, and St. John\u2019s wort with rosuvastatin. Be sure to talk with your provider before taking any other vitamin or supplement, including magnesium or vitamin D.
