It reduces inflammation by blocking the action of a certain protein to increase tear production. Most cases of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/24479-dry-eye\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dry eye disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are caused by one of two problems, or a combination of the two:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your glands don\u2019t produce tears<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your tears evaporate too quickly (often because of meibomian gland dysfunction, a problem with the part of the eyelid that secretes oil)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dry eye can also occur after eye surgery. The most common are temporary pain, blurred vision, and eye irritation upon putting the drops in. To avoid this, some providers recommend using preservative-free artificial tears about 15 minutes before using Xiidra may help. \u201cIt just adds a little barrier of protection so it doesn\u2019t sting as much,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/providers.ucsd.edu\/details\/1528490430\/ophthalmology-optometry\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maria Laura Gomez Freeman, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, ophthalmologist and director of the Dry Eye Clinic at San Diego Health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another common side effect is a funny taste sensation in the mouth or the back of the throat as your system absorbs the medication through your tear ducts. \u201cIt is not dangerous and is not a reason that one has to stop the medication,\u201d says Dr. Brocks. \u201cHowever, many find it off-putting and choose to stop the medication if they get this side effect.\u201d You can lessen this side effect by pressing your finger over your tear duct as you put the drops into your eye.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypersensitivity or allergic reactions are rare but serious side effects of Xiidra. Symptoms include hives, difficulty breathing, wheezing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, or anaphylaxis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/eye-pain-causes\"><b>What causes eye pain?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-can-affect-how-long-xiidra-takes-to-work\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What can affect how long Xiidra takes to work?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two main ways to help Xiidra work most effectively to heal dry eye.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Follow the dosing instructions.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cTo my knowledge, the only thing that will make it work faster is compliance with twice-a-day dosing and eyelid closure with drop instillation,\u201d Dr. Brocks says.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Use a mild steroid drop,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/loteprednol-etabonate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">loteprednol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for two weeks in addition to Xiidra eye drops to help speed up the healing process, suggests Dr. Freeman.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, steroids should not be used long-term, and they must be used appropriately to receive the benefits. \u201cYou must wait 15 minutes in between drops so they don\u2019t wash each other out,\u201d Dr. Freeman says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-the-standard-xiidra-dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the standard Xiidra dosage?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/xiidra\/dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">standard dose of Xiidra<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is one drop in each eye, twice daily. The drops should be administered 12 hours apart. \u201cIt\u2019s two drops a day, and you have to stick with it for at least eight to 12 weeks,\u201d says Dr. Freeman.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"who-should-avoid-taking-xiidra\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who should avoid taking Xiidra?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should not use Xiidra eye drops if you:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are pregnant or breastfeeding<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are 17 or younger<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have an active viral, bacterial, or fungal eye infection<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have a history of allergic reaction to any of the ingredients in
