That said, while both cause weight loss, only Zepbound is FDA approved for weight management, while using Ozempic for weight loss is considered <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/off-label-prescription-drugs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">off-label<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people may wonder whether it\u2019s possible to switch from Zepbound to Ozempic for weight loss, whether due to side effects, insurance coverage, or even a new <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/blood-tests-for-diabetes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Insurance is more likely to cover a medication if it is prescribed for one of its FDA-approved uses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-are-the-benefits-of-switching-from-zepbound-to-ozempic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the benefits of switching from Zepbound to Ozempic?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Switching from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/zepbound-tirzepatide-fda-approval\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zepbound<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-weight-loss\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> isn\u2019t recommended for everyone. \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/zepbound-alternatives\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zepbound<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is more effective for weight loss, so switching is typically not going to be more beneficial,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.memorialcare.org\/providers\/mir-b-ali\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mir Ali<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a bariatric surgeon and medical director of MemorialCare Surgical Weight Loss Center at Orange Coast Medical Center in Fountain Valley, California.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research shows that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tirzepatide\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tirzepatide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the active ingredient in Zepbound, can<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa2206038\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduce body weight by up to 21%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, whereas semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9486455\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduces body weight by up to 11%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014although results may vary based on individual experiences and dose.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamainternalmedicine\/fullarticle\/2821080\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cohort study of 18,386 patients<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on tirzepatide or semaglutide (the active ingredients in Zepbound and Ozempic, respectively) found similar results. After three months on the medication, tirzepatide users lost an average of 5.9% of their body weight, whereas semaglutide users lost an average of 3.6% of their body weight. After six months, tirzepatide users had lost about 10.1% of their body weight compared to 5.8% lost for semaglutide users. After 12 months of treatment, tirzepatide body weight loss was 15.3% compared to semaglutide\u2019s 8.3%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, switching from Zepbound to Ozempic is unlikely to result in greater <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/save-on-weight-loss-medication\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight loss<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, sometimes switching medications has benefits unrelated to weight loss. In these cases, a healthcare professional may decide that discontinuing Zepbound to start Ozempic could be a good move.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"diabetes-treatment-and-cardiovascular-risk-reduction\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetes treatment and cardiovascular risk reduction<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic is FDA approved to help lower blood sugar levels in people with Type 2 diabetes and<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-and-heart-disease\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in people with cardiovascular disease. It\u2019s also FDA approved for people with both Type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease. This means people on Zepbound who have Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, or kidney disease could benefit from switching to Ozempic. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-to-get-insurance-to-cover-ozempic-for-weight-loss\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insurance coverage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is also more likely when switching to Ozemipic for an FDA-approved reason.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side effects<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Individual responses vary, but fewer or less intense side effects could be a potential benefit of switching from Zepbound to Ozempic.
