In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/zepbound-sleep-apnea-fda-approval\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">January 2025<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Zepbound received another FDA approval\u2014to treat moderate to severe <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/zepbound-sleep-apnea-fda-approval\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">obstructive sleep apnea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in adults with obesity. As a fairly new medication, researchers are still exploring other potential uses for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zepbound\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zepbound<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While Zepbound is not currently FDA approved to treat fatty liver disease, some healthcare providers may prescribe it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/off-label-prescription-drugs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">off-label<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for this use.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"zepbound-as-a-treatment-for-fatty-liver-disease\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zepbound as a treatment for fatty liver disease<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatty liver disease is a medical condition where fat builds up in the liver. There are two main types:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (NAFLD) is also called <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) or metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH). This type is not related to excess alcohol use. There are two types:\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Simple fatty liver<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where there is fat in the liver but little or no inflammation or liver cell damage. This type usually does not cause serious complications.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (NASH), where there is fat in the liver, inflammation, and liver cell damage, which can lead to complications, including cirrhosis and liver cancer.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Alcoholic fatty liver disease<\/b>, also known as alcoholic steatohepatitis. This type is due to heavy use of alcohol. When the liver breaks down alcohol, harmful substances are made that can cause inflammation and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niddk.nih.gov\/health-information\/liver-disease\/nafld-nash\/symptoms-causes\">damage liver cells<\/a>. The more alcohol you consume, the more liver damage occurs. Alcoholic fatty liver disease is the first stage of liver damage caused by drinking too much alcohol. If drinking continues, it can lead to more serious problems like alcoholic hepatitis and cirrhosis.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The manufacturer of Zepbound, Lilly, is currently researching the effect of Zepbound on fatty liver disease. In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/38856224\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phase 2 clinical trial<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> called SYNERGY-NASH, patients with MASH and moderate to severe liver scarring were assigned to a Zepbound treatment group or a placebo group (a substance without active medication) for 52 weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study results found that Zepbound helped many people resolve MASH without worsening liver scarring, with higher doses leading to greater rates of resolution. Zepbound also improved liver scarring in some people. The researchers noted that more trials are needed in order to understand the efficacy and safety of Zepbound for MASH.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/1422-0067\/24\/2\/1703\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experts believe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/glp-1-agonists\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLP-1 receptor agonists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ozempic\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is similar but not exactly the same as Zepbound) help improve fatty liver disease by improving liver health and reducing fat buildup in the liver. They also help lower body weight and improve blood sugar control, which helps improve liver function. In fact, losing 7% to 10% (or more) of body weight can significantly reduce liver inflammation and scarring.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-use-zepbound-for-fatty-liver-disease\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to use Zepbound for fatty liver disease<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because Zepbound is not FDA approved for fatty liver disease, there is no specific dose outlined for this use. However, healthcare providers may follow the recommended dosing used for weight loss or sleep apnea when prescribing Zepbound off-label for fatty liver disease.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zepbound is available in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zepbound\/dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the following doses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 7.5 mg, 10 mg, 12.5 mg, and 15 mg. Healthcare providers start at the 2.5 mg dose, which is injected subcutaneously (under the skin) once weekly for at least four weeks. The dose is gradually increased (every four weeks, or sometimes longer) to a dose that is effective, while causing the least amount of side effects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For weight loss and weight maintenance, the recommended maintenance dose is 5 mg, 10 mg, or 15 mg injected once a week. For sleep apnea, the recommended maintenance dose is 10 mg or 15 mg injected once a week. The maximum dose for either use is 15 mg once a week. For both FDA-approved uses, Zepbound is typically prescribed alongside lifestyle changes like diet and exercise.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"zepbound-side-effects-warnings\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zepbound side effects &amp; warnings<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As with similar drugs, the most common side effects of Zepbound are stomach-related and include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea or constipation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stomach pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indigestion and heartburn<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burping<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other common side effects may include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Injection site reactions (redness, itching, pain, or rash near the injection site)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allergic reactions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tiredness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hair loss<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is not a full list of side effects. You should not use Zepbound if you are pregnant. If you become pregnant while using Zepbound, stop using it right away and call your healthcare provider. If you are taking an oral contraceptive (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/best-birth-control-pill-contraceptive-guide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">birth control pill<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), you will need to use a non-oral contraceptive form of birth control\u2014or add a barrier method, such as a condom\u2014for four weeks after you start using Zepbound, and for four weeks after every increase in dose.
