Here are all the important details.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-do-statins-affect-people-with-hypothyroidism\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do statins affect people with hypothyroidism?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Statins work the same way in the body whether or not you have hypothyroidism. They decrease low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL) by blocking a certain liver enzyme that synthesizes it. These medications can also help the liver eliminate more of the body\u2019s LDL cholesterol, reducing the amount that builds up in the blood vessels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In most cases, healthcare providers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jes\/article\/5\/7\/bvab038\/6161264\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommend stabilizing the thyroid hormones<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before beginning statin treatment. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0009898122000158\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research shows<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a connection between thyroid hormones and the production and clearance of cholesterol, so people who have hypothyroidism will also retain more LDL. Statin intolerance could make someone more susceptible to symptoms like muscle pain or weakness, gastrointestinal side effects, headaches, and sexual dysfunction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is why healthcare providers will typically monitor patients taking statins for hypothyroidism, and why it\u2019s important to report any changes to your health right away.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"top-recommended-statins-for-people-with-hypothyroidism\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Top recommended statins for people with hypothyroidism<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere is no one &#8216;best&#8217; statin for people with hypothyroidism, but in my experience, atorvastatin and rosuvastatin tend to be the go-to options,\u201d Dr. Genovese says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Usually, certain statins will be best for certain people based on their medical condition, other medicines, and susceptibility to side effects. \u201cI usually prefer hydrophilic statins, such as rosuvastatin and pravastatin, because they have a lower risk of penetration into muscle tissue, which reduces the risk of side effects like myalgia and myopathy,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonmethodist.org\/doctor\/mohammed-hamdi\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mohammed Hamdi, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an endocrinologist at Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital. \u201cThis is particularly important in patients with hypothyroidism, as uncontrolled thyroid levels can independently increase the risk of myopathy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are the details on a few that are commonly prescribed for people with an underactive thyroid gland\u2014typically after they\u2019ve already treated their hypothyroidism.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"pravachol-pravastatin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pravachol (pravastatin)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypothyroidism can increase the risk of statin-induced muscle pain (myalgia), but Pravachol has a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nypep.nysdoh.suny.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/DIRC_SUNY_statins-and-myalgia_v2_9.29.15-fin.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lower risk of myalgia than other statins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, making it a good option for people with thyroid issues. Still, it\u2019s a popular choice for its reliability and effectiveness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"lipitor-atorvastatin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lipitor (atorvastatin)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lipitor is one of the more common statins in general, and like Crestor, it\u2019s a moderate-to-high intensity statin, making it better for people who need significant LDL reductions to reach their goal LDL range. It has a greater risk of myalgia than Pravachol, but that risk can be less than Crestor\u2019s for some people. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/383\/bmj-2023-075837\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One study from 2023<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that atorvastatin and rosuvastatin had similar efficacy.
