These <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niddk.nih.gov\/health-information\/liver-disease\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">include<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> people with:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hepatitis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cirrhosis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcoholic fatty liver disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Porphyria<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cholangitis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wilson\u2019s disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Liver cancer<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hemochromatosis<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to this risk, it\u2019s usually recommended to avoid alcohol entirely if you have a history of liver problems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"people-who-take-hepatotoxic-drugs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who take hepatotoxic drugs<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On a similar note, people who take hepatotoxic drugs are also at higher risk of liver damage when combining leflunomide and alcohol. Leflunomide alone can already cause serious liver damage, but adding alcohol and other liver-damaging medications can significantly enhance this risk.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"older-adults\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Older adults<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While leflunomide\u2019s prescribing label doesn\u2019t note any considerations for older adults, liver function is known to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4972366\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">decline with age<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Therefore, older adults may be at higher risk of liver damage when combining leflunomide and alcohol. What\u2019s more, there is also a possibility that older adults can be more sensitive to the effects and adverse effects of leflunomide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-after-taking-leflunomide-can-you-drink-alcohol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long after taking leflunomide can you drink alcohol?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your healthcare provider advises you to wait until after leflunomide treatment to consume alcohol, you may have to wait a long time. Once leflunomide enters your system, it is converted into an active metabolite\u2014or substance\u2014called teriflunomide. Teriflunomide has a long half-life (the time it takes for half the drug to leave your system) of 18 to 19 days. Because it takes about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK554498\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">five half-lives<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a medication to be fully cleared from your body, it can take up to 95 days for the drug to leave your system. This means it can take over three months for you to be in the clear for a drink.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"which-arthritis-medications-are-not-affected-by-alcohol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which arthritis medications are not affected by alcohol?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nevertheless, certain arthritis drugs may be safer options if you are looking to have a glass of wine. For example, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/versusarthritis.org\/about-arthritis\/treatments\/drugs\/hydroxychloroquine\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plaquenil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (hydroxychloroquine) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/versusarthritis.org\/about-arthritis\/treatments\/drugs\/adalimumab\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Humira<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (adalimumab) do not have any known interactions with alcohol.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, several arthritis medications <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">do<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> interact with alcohol. Arthritis medications that can interact with alcohol include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trexall (methotrexate): Drinking alcohol with Trexall can increase your risk of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5561375\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">liver damage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as over-the-counter Advil (ibuprofen) and Aleve (naproxen): Mixing alcohol with NSAIDs can increase the risk of<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niaaa.nih.gov\/health-professionals-communities\/core-resource-on-alcohol\/alcohol-medication-interactions-potentially-dangerous-mixes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GI bleeding and ulcers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tylenol (acetaminophen): According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, combining Tylenol and alcohol can cause severe liver damage, especially if you consume three or more alcoholic drinks per day.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your healthcare provider can discuss which medications are best for you, especially if you regularly consume alcohol.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-bottom-line\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bottom line<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to the risk of serious liver damage, it\u2019s typically not recommended to drink heavily while taking leflunomide, and some providers advise avoiding alcohol altogether.
