Does hydrocortisone expire, or can you just use it until the tube is empty? Like all over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription medications and dietary supplements, hydrocortisone does expire. Here\u2019s what you need to know about when and how to use it and the best ways to store it to maximize efficacy over time.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"does-hydrocortisone-expire\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does hydrocortisone expire?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, hydrocortisone expires. \u201cA common shelf-life for hydrocortisone cream is around two to three years,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcsnyc.com\/provider\/brendan-camp-md\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brendan Camp, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a dermatologist at MDCS Dermatology: Medical Dermatology &amp; Cosmetic Surgery in New York. Of course, that\u2019s assuming that your drugstore has restocked the shelves recently. If you can\u2019t find an \u201cEXP\u201d anywhere but do see a date between 18 months and three years in the future, there\u2019s a good chance that\u2019s the expiration date.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To maintain the efficacy of your hydrocortisone cream until that date, Dr. Camp and Dr. Reissig recommend <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/safe-medication-storage-home-children\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">storing your medication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a place that is:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At room temperature<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cool and dry<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dark and away from direct sunlight<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a reason that most people keep their drugs in a medicine cabinet or bathroom drawer, as these places typically meet all these criteria. Of course, that\u2019s assuming you aren\u2019t taking hours-long, steaming hot showers every day. \u201cHeat and humidity can cause all medications to degrade and lose potency at a faster rate,\u201d Dr. Reissig notes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-expired-ointment-still-be-used\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can expired ointment still be used?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Technically, expired hydrocortisone can still be used on the affected area, though that doesn\u2019t mean it <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">should<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> be. Ultimately, it mostly depends on how far past the expiration date you\u2019re taking it out of your medicine cabinet. \u201cIf you take a medication within days of the expiration date, the medication is most likely to be fine to use,\u201d Dr. Reissig says. \u201cIf it is several weeks or months beyond the expiration date, it is best to just purchase a new supply.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While using expired medication is unlikely to hurt you beyond not doing as much to ease your symptoms, Dr. Reissig says, using a topical medication like hydrocortisone past its expiration date does come with some risks. \u201cFarther out from the expiration date, there is a greater risk of reduced potency and possible contamination, which can cause skin irritation or infection,\u201d Dr. Camp explains.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicaljournals.se\/acta\/content\/html\/10.2340\/00015555-1308\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> looked at the use of hand cream by people with eczema and found that 63% of those products were contaminated with bacteria. This is because ointments, especially those that come in a collapsible tube, typically have a high rate of contact between the user and the medication. Cream or ointment is usually squeezed out onto the finger before smearing it onto the treatment area, and then sometimes even going back for more. This frequent contact between the medication, the user, and the opening of the container makes it more likely that contamination could occur and potentially lead to possible side effects, like those Dr. Camp mentioned.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The risk of contamination is tied less to the expiration date than to the length of time you\u2019ve had the medication and the number of times you\u2019ve used it. The longer you have it and the more times you use it, the higher the risk. So if you\u2019ve had a well-used tube of hydrocortisone cream long enough that it has expired, the risk of contamination is higher, and it\u2019s likely best to just toss it. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re unsure, consult a healthcare professional for medical advice.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-dispose-of-expired-hydrocortisone\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to dispose of expired hydrocortisone<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor OTC hydrocortisone, it can simply be thrown away in the regular garbage,\u201d Dr. Reissig says. While there are drugs that the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/disposal-unused-medicines-what-you-should-know\/drug-disposal-fdas-flush-list-certain-medicines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> encourages not throwing away in the regular trash because they could be harmful to others, such as those that contain opioids like fentanyl, hydrocodone, and morphine, hydrocortisone is not one of those.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When throwing away medicine in your trash, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/consumers\/consumer-updates\/where-and-how-dispose-unused-medicines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommends removing it from its original container and mixing it with something undesirable to children or animals, such as used coffee grounds or dirt. Then put that mixture in a zip-top bag and put it in the trash.
