Its two active ingredients reduce hunger and cravings, which can make it easier for some people to lose weight with lifestyle changes like a low-calorie diet and physical activity. Like other weight loss medications, Contrave isn\u2019t always <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-insurance-plans-cover-weight-loss-medication\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">covered by health insurance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"does-kaiser-cover-contrave\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does Kaiser cover Contrave?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prescription drug coverage varies by plan. Tyson School of Medicine student\/dependent plan<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Kaiser covers Contrave, it usually requires <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/prior-authorization\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prior authorization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This means your healthcare provider will answer a few questions from the insurance company, and Kaiser will use that information to approve or deny your claim. When it comes to prescription weight loss drugs like Contrave, insurance companies sometimes want to confirm that patients have tried a strict diet and exercise program first.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to federal law, Medicare plans <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gi.org\/2025\/04\/17\/anti-obesity-drugs-will-not-be-covered-by-medicare-and-medicaid-in-2026\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can\u2019t cover<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> weight loss medications. Therefore, Kaiser Permanente Medicare plans don\u2019t cover Contrave.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicaid.gov\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicaid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> coverage is determined at the state level. Kaiser Permanente offers Medicaid plans in Colorado, Hawaii, Maryland, Oregon, Virginia, and Washington. Unfortunately, Contrave isn\u2019t covered by Medicaid in these states.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-much-is-contrave-without-insurance\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How much is Contrave without insurance?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/contrave-without-insurance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without insurance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Contrave costs an average of $837 per 120, 8 mg\/90 mg tablets. With a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/healthy.kaiserpermanente.org\/content\/dam\/kporg\/final\/documents\/formularies\/wa\/fehb-drug-formulary-wa-en-2025.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Washington Federal FEHB plan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, your copay would be $40\u2013$100.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-check-whether-your-kaiser-plan-covers-contrave\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to check whether your Kaiser plan covers Contrave\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To check whether your Kaiser plan covers Contrave, call the customer service number<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on your Kaiser Permanente insurance card. A representative can look up your plan information and help you understand your insurance coverage and copays.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or, log in to your Kaiser Permanente customer portal and look for the drug list. This document contains all the prescription medications that Kaiser covers. If Contrave is on the list, note its tier number. Then navigate to your Summary of Benefits document to see how much you owe out of pocket for that drug tier.
