Zepbound (tirzepatide)<\/span><\/a> is a weekly injectable medication that is FDA approved for chronic weight management in overweight or obese adults, and to treat obstructive sleep apnea in adults with obesity. It contains the same active ingredient as Mounjaro, which is used to lower blood sugar levels in people with Type 2 diabetes. Because <\/span>it mimics the effects of two different hormones<\/span><\/a>, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), <\/span>it potentially has more benefits than drugs that only mimic GLP-1, like Ozempic<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

It also has a similar <\/span>side effect profile<\/span><\/a> to Ozempic, causing nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, constipation, and\u2014for a small number of people\u2014an increase in headaches. Are headaches a common side effect of Zepbound?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Headaches are one of the possible side effects of Zepbound, but they\u2019re not considered one of the drug\u2019s most common side effects. Zepbound\u2019s manufacturer, Eli Lilly, doesn\u2019t include headache as a side effect because it didn\u2019t occur in <\/span>2% or more of people<\/span><\/a> taking the drug during clinical trials.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Since then, some studies suggest a higher percentage of people on Zepbound experiencing headaches, but it\u2019s hard to pinpoint the exact amount. For example, <\/span>9.4% of participants<\/span><\/a> in a 2023 phase-3 trial reported headache, but so did 7.5% of participants in the placebo group.<\/span><\/p>\n

Some people may be more likely to get a headache while taking Zepbound than others, including people on a higher dose. <\/span>One study<\/span><\/a> found that headaches occurred more often when people were taking a 10- or 15-milligram dose compared to a 5-milligram dose. Headaches have also been reported more often by women than men, says <\/span>Rani Aravamudhan<\/span><\/a>, MD, a physician based in the Detroit metropolitan area. However, that doesn\u2019t necessarily mean women are more susceptible. \u201cCurrently, there is not enough data, evidence, or clinical studies [to say] who might be at higher risk for headaches with Zepbound or other GLP-1 meds,\u201d Dr. Aravamudhan notes.<\/span><\/p>\n
