Zepbound\u2019s manufacturer, Eli Lilly, doesn\u2019t include headache as a side effect because it didn\u2019t occur in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uspl.lilly.com\/zepbound\/zepbound.html#pi\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2% or more of people<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> taking the drug during clinical trials.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since then, some studies suggest a higher percentage of people on Zepbound experiencing headaches, but it\u2019s hard to pinpoint the exact amount. For example, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10667099\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9.4% of participants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a 2023 phase-3 trial reported headache, but so did 7.5% of participants in the placebo group.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people may be more likely to get a headache while taking Zepbound than others, including people on a higher dose. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9915969\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that headaches occurred more often when people were taking a 10- or 15-milligram dose compared to a 5-milligram dose. Headaches have also been reported more often by women than men, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/rani-aravamudhan\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rani Aravamudhan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a physician based in the Detroit metropolitan area. There are a few reasons why this might be happening, but Dr. Aravamudhan says the cause isn\u2019t Zepbound directly\u2014instead, it&#8217;s the effects Zepbound is having on your body.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"low-blood-sugar\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low blood sugar<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zepbound\u2019s active ingredient, tirzepatide, effectively lowers your blood sugar. While this is good news for people with Type 2 diabetes who need help managing their glucose levels, it can result in blood sugar that\u2019s too low for some people, also known as hypoglycemia. A common <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/healthy.kaiserpermanente.org\/health-wellness\/health-encyclopedia\/he.symptoms-of-low-blood-sugar.aa20831\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">symptom of hypoglycemia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is headache.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This may be more common in people using Zepbound to treat Type 2 diabetes, especially if you are also taking other medications that lower your blood sugar. For example, one clinical trial found that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/zepbound.lilly.com\/hcp\/how-zepbound-works\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4.2% of people<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with diabetes taking Zepbound experienced hypoglycemia compared to 1.3% of people in the placebo group.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"dehydration\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dehydration<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gastrointestinal side effects like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea are common with Zepbound; in fact, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uspl.lilly.com\/zepbound\/zepbound.html#pi\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nausea is the most common side effect, occurring in 25-28% of people<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Between 19% and 23% of people on Zepbound report diarrhea, and 8% to 13% report vomiting.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"do-other-glp-1s-cause-headaches\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do other GLP-1s cause headaches?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other GLP-1 medications can cause headaches for the same reasons Zepbound can: sudden drops in blood sugar, dehydration, and changes to your eating habits that lead to electrolyte loss and less food intake. Like Zepbound, the manufacturers of Ozempic don\u2019t report <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=adec4fd2-6858-4c99-91d4-531f5f2a2d79\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">headache as a side effect<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> based on their clinical trials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your experience with Wegovy, on the other hand, could be different. Even though it contains the same active ingredient as Ozempic (semaglutide), it\u2019s typically prescribed at a higher dose because of its approval as a weight loss treatment. In clinical trials, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.novo-pi.com\/wegovy.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14% of people<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> taking the highest dose of Wegovy reported headache as a side effect compared to 10% of the placebo group.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-avoid-zepbound-headaches\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to avoid Zepbound headaches<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beltrebariatricsfl.com\/about\/meet-dr-beltre\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wiljon Beltre<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, bariatric and metabolic surgeon and founder of Beltre Bariatrics in Florida, Zepbound headaches are often described as &#8220;nagging\u201d headaches, meaning they\u2019re usually not debilitating or severe and are short-lasting. But if you\u2019re trying to avoid getting them on Zepbound, there are a few things you can do.<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Eat small, healthy meals:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> What you eat, and when you eat it, can help you avoid sudden drops in your blood sugar. Try eating <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.cornell.edu\/sites\/health\/files\/docs\/External%20Weblinks\/Hypoglycemia-Nutrition-Recommendations-with-Meal%20Plan.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">smaller meals every 3-4 hours that have a good mix of complex carbohydrates, protein, fat, and fiber<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to keep your blood sugar levels stable. Avoid meals high in added sugar.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Stay hydrated:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Dehydration is common with GLP-1 drugs (especially if you have any vomiting or diarrhea) and often causes headaches. If you\u2019re having trouble keeping down plain water, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancerwise\/is-bone-broth-good-for-you.h00-159694389.html#:~:text=Bone%20broth%20is%20more%20nutrient,mouth%20and%20throat%2C%20Wohlford%20says.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bone broth is a good substitute because it also has nutrients in it<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that you may be missing if you\u2019re eating less. You can also opt for an electrolyte drink if you\u2019ve had stomach problems and need hydration with benefits.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Avoid alcohol:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Although alcohol isn\u2019t off-limits for people taking Zepbound, it can increase the risk of side effects like low blood sugar and nausea. Alcohol acts as a diuretic as well, increasing urine production and contributing to dehydration. Dr. Aravamudhan says avoiding alcohol with Zepbound can be helpful in reducing your risk of headache.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you get a headache anyway after making these changes, OTC pain relievers like acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and aspirin are generally safe to take with Zepbound. They might not work quite as well as you\u2019re used to, however: \u201cTaking oral medication while using Zepbound may make [it] less effective,\u201d says Dr. Beltre, \u201c[because] Zepbound can impact your body\u2019s ability to absorb oral medication, resulting in a lower level of the drug in your system.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a good idea to consult with a healthcare professional before taking any other oral medications while on Zepbound, advises Dr. Beltre.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-take-zepbound-to-reduce-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to take Zepbound to reduce side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many people taking Zepbound notice fewer side effects the longer they\u2019re on the medication. Dr. Beltre says most side effects, including headaches, go away within a few days to a couple of weeks of starting Zepbound.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the meantime, there are a few ways you can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9821052\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduce the side effects of GLP-1 medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including Zepbound:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eat slowly and try to eat smaller meals more often<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eat bland foods, like toast, rice, and bananas\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stop eating when you feel full<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid foods that are overly greasy, spicy, sweet, or fatty\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stay hydrated, using water-rich foods like soup, broth, and gelatin, if drinking too much water worsens your symptoms<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drink ginger tea or chew on ginger root<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t overdo it with fiber; start slow and gradually increase\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t eat too close to bedtime or lie down right after a meal<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get plenty of light exercise<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re still experiencing side effects with Zepbound after several weeks, despite making some lifestyle changes, Dr. Beltre says you should talk to your healthcare provider.
