Rosuvastatin is a type of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/statins\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">statin drug<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that works by decreasing the amount of cholesterol the liver produces and decreasing cholesterol levels in the blood. Lowering cholesterol, especially LDL cholesterol (\u201cbad\u201d cholesterol), helps prevent heart disease, atherosclerosis, heart attacks, and strokes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people taking rosuvastatin wonder whether rosuvastatin causes weight gain, whether they\u2019re noticing weight gain while taking the drug, or have heard people talking about this side effect. It\u2019s a concern many statin users have about rosuvastatin, as well as other common statin medications. Here, we\u2019ll unpack the question of whether rosuvastatin can cause weight gain, as well as weight loss options for people who notice increasing weight while taking rosuvastatin.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-rosuvastatin-cause-weight-gain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can rosuvastatin cause weight gain?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although many people report<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/medications-that-cause-weight-gain\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight gain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while taking rosuvastatin and other statins, there is no research linking rosuvastatin use and weight gain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRosuvastatin has not been associated with clinically significant weight gain,\u201d says Diala Alatassi, MD, obesity medicine physician at<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teleslimclinic.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TeleSlim Clinic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Dr. Alatassi notes, there is some research linking statin use with very small increases in body weight. For example,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahajournals.org\/doi\/10.1161\/atv.0000000000000073\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a 2018 meta-analysis published by the American Heart Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that statin therapy increases body weight by 0.24 kg over the course of four years. But this small amount of weight gain \u201cdoes not make it clinically important,\u201d Dr. Alatassi says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"why-might-rosuvastatin-weight-gain-happen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why might rosuvastatin weight gain happen?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although rosuvastatin weight gain isn\u2019t a listed side effect of taking the medication, weight gain is something that both patients and healthcare professionals often notice. \u201cEven though weight gain isn\u2019t officially listed as a common side effect, I have had patients tell me they\u2019ve noticed it after starting rosuvastatin,\u201d says Annika Kariniemi, RN, APRN, CNP, a family nurse practitioner and founder of<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.activ8-health.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Activ8 Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Kariniemi, while there\u2019s no clear evidence that rosuvastatin directly causes people to store more fat, there are a few other ways that the medication may play a role in weight increases.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"age-related-causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Age-related causes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One possible cause of rosuvastatin weight gain is the age-related metabolic changes that happen among people who typically take rosuvastatin or other statins. \u201cSince many people start statins in their 40s, 50s, or 60s, when metabolism naturally slows, the timing can make it feel like the medication is to blame,\u201d Kariniemi adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"certain-rosuvastatin-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain rosuvastatin side effects<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most common side effects of rosuvastatin and<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/statin-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other statins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is muscle aches and pains. Symptoms like muscle pain and fatigue from rosuvastatin create \u201ca perfect storm for weight gain,\u201d says Leonard A. Berkowitz, PA-C, a certified physician assistant and the cofounder of the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/cmh-ri.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Center for Men\u2019s Health Rhode Island (CMH-RI)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen my patients hurt and feel tired, they stop lifting weights and become more sedentary,\u201d he describes. \u201cI&#8217;ve seen guys go from regular gym sessions to couch time because their legs ache constantly on statins.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people taking rosuvastatin experience lower energy levels and fatigue as a side effect of rosuvastatin. These side effects \u201ccan make you less active without even realizing it,\u201d Kariniemi describes. In turn, this inactivity and lack of exercise can cause weight gain.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"insulin-resistance-with-statin-use\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insulin resistance with statin use<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, though these changes are minimal, there\u2019s also some research that has linked statin use to metabolic changes associated with<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/rapid-weight-gain-causes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight gain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cSome research shows that some statins, including rosuvastatin, can cause a small increase in risk in hemoglobin A1C, increasing the risk of pre-diabetes\/diabetes,\u201d Dr. Alatassi says. \u201cAnd that can cause weight gain in the mechanism of insulin resistance, and increased fat mass.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of note, some research\u2014including<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ccjm.org\/content\/90\/1\/53\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a 2023 review published in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cleveland Clinic Journal of Medicine<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014has found that these metabolic changes are more likely to happen at higher doses of statins and with high-intensity statin therapy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"common-rosuvastatin-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common rosuvastatin side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like all medications, rosuvastatin can have possible side effects. Overall, most people who take rosuvastatin don\u2019t notice significant side effects. Statin medications in general are considered safe, and their proven ability to reduce cholesterol, atherosclerosis, and cardiovascular disease tends to outweigh most risk factors and possible side effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/crestor-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most common side effects of rosuvastatin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include headaches, fatigue, low energy, and joint pain. Some people experience gastrointestinal issues like nausea and constipation. One of the most prevalent side effects of rosuvastatin are muscle aches, muscle pain, and muscle weakness. These symptoms can range from mild to severe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Though rare, some rosuvastatin side effects can be serious. Serious side effects of rosuvastatin can include liver issues, kidney issues, and rhabdomyolysis, a breakdown of muscle tissue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/lookup.cfm?setid=3ffe0294-3997-2755-e054-00144ff8d46c\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Less common side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of rosuvastatin include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stomach pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sensitivity or allergy symptoms like rashes, hives, and swelling<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pancreatitis<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Usually, people who take statins like rosuvastatin need to take them for the rest of their lives to control their cholesterol as they age and decrease cardiovascular issues. For the most part, rosuvastatin does not have negative<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-are-the-long-term-side-effects-of-rosuvastatin\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">long-term effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Most effects of rosuvastatin include the side effects listed above, such as muscle and joint pain, constipation, and headaches. Once the medication is discontinued, these side effects end and don\u2019t have lasting impacts on the body.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-to-do-about-rosuvastatin-weight-gain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What to do about rosuvastatin weight gain<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you notice your weight increasing, seek medical advice from a healthcare provider first to evaluate the cause of the weight gain. Importantly, don\u2019t stop taking rosuvastatin without consulting your healthcare provider. If you have hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol), it\u2019s important to continue treating it. Most of the time, if you are unhappy with side effects, your provider will discuss other<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/rosuvastatin-alternatives\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rosuvastatin alternatives<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or other cholesterol-lowering medication options.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSometimes I suggest simvastatin and pravastatin, which have less effect on hyperglycemia and thus weight gain,\u201d Dr. Alatassi says. \u201cSwitching to one of those agents in the setting of excessive weight gain can be reasonable, although direct head-to-head trials about statins&#8217; effect on weight have not been done yet.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whatever is causing your weight gain, adhering to a healthy diet is essential for your heart, cholesterol levels, metabolic health, and body weight. \u201cStick with meals built around lean proteins, colorful veggies, and high-fiber carbs to help you feel full and keep blood sugar steady,\u201d Kariniemi recommends.
