While it is unclear whether Ubrelvy was the cause, researchers note that more studies are needed to understand its long-term safety in pregnancy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acog.org\/clinical\/clinical-guidance\/clinical-practice-guideline\/articles\/2022\/05\/headaches-in-pregnancy-and-postpartum\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> does not currently recommend Ubrelvy for pregnant patients. Neurologist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/danielle-wilhour-md\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Danielle Wilhour, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, of UCHealth, explains: \u201cIn my practice, I counsel women to discontinue Ubrelvy once they become pregnant, and I do not prescribe it during pregnancy. As a relatively new medication (approved in 2019), we do not yet have enough evidence regarding its safety during pregnancy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a pregnant woman is taking or considering Ubrelvy, it should only be used when the potential benefits clearly outweigh the risks to the fetus. In such cases, patients are encouraged to enroll in AbbVie\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.empresspregnancyregistry.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pregnancy exposure registry,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which tracks outcomes for mothers and their babies.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-are-the-risks-of-taking-ubrelvy-while-pregnant\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the risks of taking Ubrelvy while pregnant?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research on Ubrelvy (ubrogepant) use in pregnancy is limited, but there are several potential concerns:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Potential risk to fetal development: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the FDA-approved drug label, animal studies have shown adverse effects on embryo-fetal development at exposures higher than typical clinical doses. While these doses were above standard human use, the findings are still considered significant. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I counsel patients that data from animal reproduction studies indicate in utero exposure to Ubrelvy may cause fetal harm,\u201d adds Dr. Wilhour.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Potential risk to pregnancy: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThese studies also suggest that CGRP medications play an important role in regulating placental blood flow, uterine relaxation, and blood pressure. Therefore, CGRP antagonists could theoretically increase the risk of gestational hypertension and preeclampsia. It is also important to note that pregnant patients with migraines already have an increased baseline risk of hypertensive disorders (high blood pressure), including preeclampsia and eclampsia.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Placental transfer: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is not yet clear whether Ubrelvy crosses the placenta. However, because animal studies suggest potential negative effects, it is possible that the drug reaches the fetus.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ubrelvy-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects of Ubrelvy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include nausea, sleepiness, and dry mouth. The drug should not be taken more than eight times per month due to limited safety data on frequent use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ubrelvy is contraindicated for people with kidney problems, liver problems, or a history of allergic reactions to any of the ingredients. In addition, has several drug interactions, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain antibiotics, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/rifampin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rifampin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clarithromycin, itraconazole, ketoconazole, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ciprofloxacin, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/fluvoxamine-maleate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fluvoxamine<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/cyclosporine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cyclosporine<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/phenytoin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phenytoin<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/eltrombopag-olamine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eltrombopag<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/carvedilol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carvedilol<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b\u200bPatients on these medications may need to discuss dosage adjustments with a healthcare professional or avoid Ubrelvy altogether.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you plan to breastfeed after giving birth, you may need to avoid Ubrelvy as well. Limited data suggest Ubrelvy is excreted into breast milk in very small amounts. In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/40391560\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 12 lactating women, the estimated infant dose was only about 0.15% of the maternal weight-adjusted dose. While this suggests low exposure, there are no data on its effects on infants or milk production.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-can-i-take-instead-of-ubrelvy-during-pregnancy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What can I take instead of Ubrelvy during pregnancy?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you experience migraines during pregnancy, there are several safer alternatives to Ubrelvy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"acute-treatment\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acute treatment<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These treatment options can help alleviate migraine symptoms after they start:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Acetaminophen:<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/acetaminophen\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acetaminophen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, also commonly known as Tylenol, is considered the safest, first-line option for migraine headaches throughout pregnancy. Typical dosing is 500 mg to 1000 mg orally every 4 to 6 hours as needed. The addition of caffeine to acetaminophen in daily doses less than 200 mg is also considered first-line treatment for migraines in pregnancy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>NSAIDS: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-is-ibuprofen-made-of\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ibuprofen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be considered for use in the first half of pregnancy, or less than 20 weeks, if the benefits of pain relief outweigh the risks. Data are conflicting on whether NSAID use in the first trimester slightly increases the risk of birth defects. NSAID use is not recommended after 20 weeks of pregnancy because of the well-documented adverse effects on the fetal kidneys and heart.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Sumatriptan: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/sumatriptan-succinate\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sumatriptan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is another pregnancy-safe option to treat a migraine attack that is resistant or unresponsive to other medications.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Reglan and Benadryl: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For moderate to severe attacks, Reglan and Benadryl are also considered safe,\u201d adds Dr. Wilhour. The ACOG recommends this combination as a second-line treatment of migraines that do not improve with acetaminophen and caffeine.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10591891\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Occipital nerve blocks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/35362816\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trigger point injections<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are also considered safe in pregnancy.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"preventive-medication\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preventive medication<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news is that migraines are frequently influenced by estrogen fluctuations, which are mitigated during pregnancy due to the absence of monthly cycles,\u201d explains <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tanya Wills, NP, CNM, a certified nurse midwife, women\u2019s healthcare nurse practitioner, and an international board-certified lactation consultant at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/manhattanbirth.com\/?srsltid=AfmBOooBNhPo46IGHh3LU2vGQ6Nu4hikQ_Gu581gx5dGbccgsy8oSHs7\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manhattan Birth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Many pregnant women experience a great improvement in migraine and don\u2019t need<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> preventive therapy for migraines during pregnancy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If necessary, antihistamines such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/cyproheptadine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cyproheptadine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/diphenhydramine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diphenhydramine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or calcium channel blockers such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/verapamil-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">verapamil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are preventive options to consider in consultation with your healthcare provider.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"natural-remedies-for-migraine-headaches-during-pregnancy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Natural remedies for migraine headaches during pregnancy<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/20464586\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Non-medication options<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are typically the safest way to approach migraines during pregnancy. Dr. Wilhour says these are the first options she recommends to her patients:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Acupuncture: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acupuncture is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/37329483\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">generally effective for migraine treatment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and prevention and is considered to be safe in pregnancy.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Magnesium and other supplements:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Taking magnesium daily, typically 400-600 mg, is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/36495328\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shown to be effective <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for migraines in pregnancy and can affect migraine frequency, severity, and duration. Vitamin B2 may also be a helpful vitamin to take to prevent migraines during pregnancy.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Mindfulness, biofeedback, and behavior therapy:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/39968795\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Behavior-based approaches<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to reducing migraines include cognitive behavioral therapy, relaxation training, and general mindfulness. They can reduce migraine frequency and improve quality of life. The evidence in pregnancy is limited but is generally considered to be safe and beneficial.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Avoiding triggers: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Migraines are often triggered by specific things such as lack of sleep, dehydration, specific foods, and stress.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cKeep in mind that experiencing migraines without treatment and deciding to \u2018tough them out\u2019 is not a risk-free option,\u201d adds Wills. \u201cDebilitating migraines can lead to a lack of normal life-functioning, propel major mood disorders, and even raise the risk of more serious issues like stroke, all of which have been shown to contribute to preventable poor outcomes in pregnancy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No matter what, it&#8217;s important to stay in close communication with your healthcare provider to find an approach that\u2019s safe, effective, and tailored to your needs during pregnancy. Wills says, \u201cTalk with your midwife or healthcare provider about therapies that have worked for you in the past. Remember, treating migraines at their earliest onset will usually result in the best relief of symptoms.
