Not only that, but often, the patient has to meet certain requirements before <\/span>Cigna<\/span> will cover either <\/span>brand-name<\/span> Vyvanse<\/span> or generic <\/span>Vyvanse<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Prior authorization<\/span><\/h3>\n

Prior authorization<\/span><\/a> is a process where a <\/span>health insurance company<\/span> makes sure that a <\/span>prescription medication<\/span> is medically necessary for you. This is typically done in conjunction with your <\/span>healthcare<\/span> provider. \u201cIn my experience, <\/span>Cigna<\/span> almost always requires <\/span>prior authorization<\/span> for <\/span>brand-name<\/span> Vyvanse<\/span>, and this also often applies to the <\/span>generic medication<\/span>,\u201d Dr. Batista says.<\/span><\/p>\n

Documented diagnosis<\/span><\/h3>\n

Insurance <\/span>health benefit plans<\/span> like <\/span>Cigna<\/span> usually \u201crequire a formal diagnosis documented in the patient\u2019s medical record to meet coverage criteria, and sometimes medical records have to be sent over to the plan,\u201d Dr. Batista describes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Step therapy<\/span><\/h3>\n

Another action <\/span>Cigna<\/span> and other similar <\/span>insurance companies<\/span> often require is <\/span>step therapy<\/span><\/a>, which is when the <\/span>insurance company<\/span> requires the patient to try several similar <\/span>prescription medications<\/span> before approving coverage for a particular medication. \u201cYour prescribing physician needs to document that you’ve tried at least two other <\/span>ADHD<\/span> medications without success, or that you have specific medical reasons why <\/span>Vyvanse<\/span> is necessary over alternatives,\u201d says Erika Frieze, PsyD, clinical psychologist at<\/span> Bridges of the Mind<\/span><\/a>. When it comes to <\/span>Vyvanse<\/span>, this usually means trying generic<\/span> Adderall XR<\/span>(<\/span>amphetamine<\/span>-dextroamphetamine)<\/span><\/a> or<\/span> Ritalin<\/span> (<\/span>methylphenidate<\/span> HCl)<\/span><\/a> first, according to Dr. Frieze. Some <\/span>Cigna<\/span> plans may require you to try <\/span>ADHD<\/span> medications like <\/span>Concerta<\/span> (<\/span>methylphenidate<\/span>) or Strattera (<\/span>atomoxetine<\/span>).<\/span><\/p>\n

Quality limits<\/span><\/h3>\n

This can add up quickly, with <\/span>Vyvanse<\/span> costing as much as $6,684 for a full year\u2019s supply.<\/span><\/p>\n

Even if <\/span>your insurance covers Vyvanse<\/span>, you may owe a<\/span> copayment<\/span><\/a>. This amount will vary from one <\/span>Cigna health benefit plan<\/span> to another. \u201cMost of my clients end up paying $30-60 <\/span>copays<\/span> for <\/span>brand-name<\/span> tier medications [like <\/span>Vyvanse<\/span>], but I’ve seen some plans require 20% <\/span>coinsurance,<\/span> which can mean $200+ monthly costs,\u201d Dr. Frieze shares.<\/span><\/p>\n

Again, without insurance, <\/span>Vyvanse<\/span> can cost up to $557 for a 30-day<\/span> supply<\/span>. You may prefer to check the web or ask your friends whether their <\/span>health insurance company<\/span> covers <\/span>Vyvanse<\/span>.
