According to research and medical experts, levofloxacin\u2014like many other medications\u2014has several interactions with other drugs. It\u2019s crucial to be aware of these interactions to avoid the chances of mild to severe side effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"levofloxacin-drug-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/drsarahbonza\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sarah Bonza, MD, MPH, FAAFP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a family medicine physician, founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bonzahealth.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bonza Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and hospitalist physician at Fairfield Medical Center in Lancaster, Ohio, antacids reduce levofloxacin absorption in the gut, making it less effective and worsening the infection you\u2019re treating. Based on clinical trials, taking this heart medication with levofloxacin can have potential risks, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1201971218345648#\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prolongation of the QT interval<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cLevofloxacin has warnings regarding QT prolongation and therefore should not be combined with other QT-prolonging drugs,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/dr-bharat-pothuri-a2745a2bb\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bharat Pothuri, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a board-certified gastroenterologist and founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gastrodoxs.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GastroDoxs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Houston, Texas. A prolonged QT interval means there\u2019s a significant delay in the heart\u2019s ventricular recovery after a heartbeat. This can lead to long QT syndrome (LQTS), a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/nursing-and-health-professions\/qt-prolongation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart condition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where the electrical recovery between heartbeats is longer than normal. Steroid drugs can increase the risk of tendon problems like Achilles tendon rupture and tendinitis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI have seen several patients on corticosteroids who had an associated side effect of tendon issues after initiating treatment with levofloxacin,\u201d Dr. Pothuri says. &#8220;If it&#8217;s a patient who is on steroids, I&#8217;m typically more careful to initiate a medication like levofloxacin and explore alternatives as much as we can.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some popular corticosteroids that may not mix well with levofloxacin:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deltasone (prednisone)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decadron, DexPak (dexamethasone)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/medrol?q=Medrol%20(methylPREDNISolone)&amp;isHomeSearch=true\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medrol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (methylprednisone)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/cortef?q=Cortef%20(Hydrocortisone)&amp;isHomeSearch=false\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cortef<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (hydrocortisone)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"levofloxacin-food-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Levofloxacin food interactions\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Bonza says the antibiotic drug can interact with certain foods. \u201cFood with dairy and calcium-fortified products interacts with the absorption of levofloxacin in the gut, rendering the antibiotic less effective,\u201d she explains. \u201cWhat I advise patients is that they should take levofloxacin with water only, and two to three hours before or six hours after intake of dairy or mineral-fortified food products.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/occhd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Levofloxacin_Fact_Sheet.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that might not mix too well with levofloxacin include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Milk<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cheese<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yogurt<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some fortified juices and cereals<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"levofloxacin-and-grapefruit\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Levofloxacin and grapefruit\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s best to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/grapefruit-juice-with-medicine-other-foods\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">avoid grapefruit juice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while taking levofloxacin. This is because compounds in the fruit may interact with the antibiotic\u2019s metabolism, potentially causing peak plasma concentration levels and serious side effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"other-levofloxacin-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other levofloxacin interactions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to the drugs mentioned above, Dr. Pothuri says that multivitamins could also cause an interaction with levofloxacin. \u201cI often advise my patients that even multivitamins can affect how effective your antibiotic is,\u201d he says. \u201cThis is why I stress spacing out supplements and medications as they arise.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"levofloxacin-and-caffeine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Levofloxacin and caffeine\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Bonza, the antibiotic drug may interact with caffeinated drinks. \u201cLevofloxacin can decrease the removal of caffeine from our body,\u201d she explains. \u201cAs a consequence, it can lead to jitteriness, sleep issues, or anxiety in some people.
