But in reality, most come with at least a few unwanted ones.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common culprits include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/best-muscle-relaxers\/\">skeletal muscle relaxants<\/a>, which are<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">commonly prescribed for muscle spasms or back pain, and central nervous system (CNS) depressants like benzodiazepines,\u00a0 which are typically used for anxiety but also have muscle-relaxing effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/best-muscle-relaxers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muscle relaxers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can also slow digestion. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/medications-that-cause-constipation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constipation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> isn\u2019t the most common side effect, but it does occur. Here\u2019s why it happens and what you can do to keep things moving.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-muscle-relaxers-cause-constipation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can muscle relaxers cause constipation?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cConstipation is a side effect, but it is not a common side effect of taking muscle relaxants,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/atlanticcoastgastro.com\/physicians\/sandhya-shukla-md\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sandhya Shukla, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a board-certified gastroenterologist with Atlantic Coast Gastroenterology Associates in New Jersey. \u201cIn the safety data, constipation is usually reported in 1% to 5% of patients using commonly prescribed muscle relaxants such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/cyclobenzaprine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cyclobenzaprine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tizanidine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tizanidine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/methocarbamol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">methocarbamol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/baclofen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">baclofen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d Dr. Shukla adds that there are other, more common gastrointestinal side effects of taking muscle relaxers, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/nausea-relief-medication-and-home-remedies\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nausea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and indigestion.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"why-do-muscle-relaxers-cause-constipation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why do muscle relaxers cause constipation?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two types of muscle relaxers: antispasmodic medications (which are mostly used to treat muscle spasms and pain) and antispastic medications (which are mostly used to treat spasticity). These two classes of muscle relaxers work in slightly different ways but can both cause constipation. \u201cAntispasmodics relax the smooth muscle of the intestines and antispastics affect nerve signals and muscle tone, so either can reduce bowel movement activity,\u201d explains internist and gastroenterologist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gutsygirlmd.com\/about\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supriya Rao, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Dr. Shukla says that constipation is much more frequently seen as a side effect of antispasmodics. \u201cAntispasmodics cause constipation primarily through their anticholinergic effects. Make sure to talk to a healthcare professional and your pharmacist about possible drug interactions with any OTC, prescription drugs, or supplements you\u2019re taking before you start a muscle relaxer.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-prevent-constipation-from-muscle-relaxers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to prevent constipation from muscle relaxers<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drs. Rao and Shukla say that their first-line recommendations for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/home-remedies-for-constipation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">preventing constipation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from muscle relaxers are to increase your intake of fiber and water. Healthy <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/about-cancer\/treatment\/side-effects\/nutrition\/high-fiber-foods\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high-fiber foods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include nut butters, beans, lentils, whole-wheat bread, apples, berries, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, leafy greens, and potatoes. You should also aim to drink <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/patientinstructions\/000120.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at least 68 ounces of water<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> per day. Together, fiber and water will make your stool bigger and softer so your GI tract can push it out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you experience constipation while using a muscle relaxer, and dietary measures are insufficient, osmotic <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/laxatives\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">laxatives<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/polyethylene-glycol-3350\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">polyethylene glycol (PEG)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or magnesium salts are recommended as first-line pharmacologic therapy,\u201d Dr. Shukla says. Osmotic laxatives pull water into your colon, softening your stool. If neither of these approaches works, Dr. Shukla says you could try a stimulant laxative. These activate the nerves that prompt the muscles in the colon to work harder to move your stool along.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"when-to-see-a-healthcare-provider\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When to see a healthcare provider<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it can happen occasionally, constipation is not one of the most common side effects of muscle relaxers. Chances are, even if you do experience constipation, it won\u2019t be for long. \u201cMuscle relaxers are intended for short-term use, so the constipation should go away when you stop taking them,\u201d Dr. Rao says. If it doesn\u2019t and the laxatives mentioned above don\u2019t work either, it\u2019s worth reaching out to your healthcare provider. You should also get evaluated if you experience any \u201cred flag\u201d symptoms that could indicate an underlying problem, Dr. Shukla says.
