Many people no longer rely on the doctor\u2019s office for vaccines. Instead, they head straight to the pharmacy, where the pharmacist has become the face of vaccination. That means pharmacists must not only administer vaccines, but also answer questions from curious (or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/vaccine-hesitancy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">skeptical<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) patients.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-s-new-in-vaccines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What&#8217;s new in vaccines?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are the biggest innovations affecting your patients.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"rsv-vaccines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RSV vaccines<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RSV vaccines are a huge step toward preventing respiratory illnesses. After decades of research, the FDA approved the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/fda-approves-first-respiratory-syncytial-virus-rsv-vaccine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first RSV vaccine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for older patients in 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two options are now available for older people 60 and older: Arexvy (from GSK) and Abrysvo (from Pfizer). Both reduce the risk of severe RSV illness in older adults, which often leads to hospitalizations in older adults.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abrysvo also works for pregnant women between weeks 32 and 36, giving newborns protection during their most vulnerable first six months. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/magazine.medlineplus.gov\/article\/a-new-vaccine-is-here-to-protect-you-and-your-loved-ones-from-rsv-this-winter\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RSV<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> season typically runs from November to March, making timing especially important. Side effects are usually mild, such as arm soreness or fatigue.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"intranasal-at-home-flu-vaccines-flumist\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intranasal at-home flu vaccines (FluMist)\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FluMist offers a needle-free, intranasal option for people ages of 2 and 49. It uses weakened live viruses that can&#8217;t cause illness, and works as effectively as a flu shot. It&#8217;s sprayed into each nostril and can be used <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/vaccines-blood-biologics\/vaccines\/flumist\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at home<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, making it convenient and less intimidating than injections, especially for children and those with needle anxiety.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"combination-vaccines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Combination vaccines<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Combination vaccines are streamlining immunization schedules. Penbraya, approved in 2023,\u00a0 was the first U.S. vaccine to protect against all five major meningococcal groups (A, B, C, W, Y) in just two doses, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pfizermedical.com\/penbraya\/dosage-admin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">six months apart<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They don&#8217;t require refrigeration, and patients can apply them at home, which could help make vaccinations accessible, convenient, and less painful.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"universal-flu-vaccines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Universal flu vaccines<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2076-393X\/13\/8\/863\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Universal flu vaccines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> aim to protect against multiple flu strains with one shot. Current flu vaccines only work against specific strains each year. A universal vaccine would provide longer-lasting protection.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"therapeutic-vaccines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therapeutic vaccines<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therapeutic vaccines are a different story. Instead of preventing disease, they help treat it.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/trends\/pharmacological-sciences\/fulltext\/S0165-6147(24)00245-1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Cancer vaccine research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is picking up, with scientists developing dendritic cell vaccines to boost immune response and make tumors more sensitive to checkpoint inhibitors. One day, these could be part of standard cancer care.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if these aren\u2019t in your fridge yet, it\u2019s worth keeping an eye out. Patients are going to have questions, and the more you know, the more you can help.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-this-means-for-pharmacy-practice\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What this means for pharmacy practice<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New vaccine technology will eventually shake up daily life for retail pharmacies if it hasn\u2019t already.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"workflow-and-training\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Workflow and training<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pharmacists already deliver <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/38573866\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nearly 70%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of COVID-19 vaccines, and new technologies will only add complexity. Some of these new vaccines may require special storage, longer post-administration monitoring, or new preparation steps.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Training will need to expand to include mRNA, viral vector, and protein subunit options. Each technology has unique side effects and contraindications to watch for. Clear, empathetic communication is key.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Start by listening.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Ask what\u2019s actually on their mind before you launch into an explanation. Advances in vaccines will change not only what\u2019s being administered but also how pharmacists <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-to-improve-patient-care\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">connect with their community<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Artificial intelligence <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is already helping drugmakers develop vaccines faster, which means new products could show up at the pharmacy counter more often.
