Mucinex is also the brand name of a family of medications that treat cold symptoms, coughs, the flu, and allergy symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to Mucinex products containing only guaifenesin, some of the most commonly used Mucinex combination products include Mucinex D and Mucinex DM.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/mucinex-d\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mucinex D<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an expectorant and nasal decongestant that combines guaifenesin and pseudoephedrine.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/mucinex-dm\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mucinex DM<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> combines guaifenesin with dextromethorphan, a cough suppressant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mucinex products containing only <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">guaifenesin do not have any known drug or other interactions, but combination Mucinex products\u2014including Mucinex D and Mucinex DM\u2014may interact poorly with certain medications or substances. If you are taking any Mucinex product, you should read labels carefully so that you understand what the product contains and so that you can be aware of any potential interactions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mucinex-drug-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mucinex drug interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When taken as guaifenesin alone, Mucinex has a relatively low risk of any concerning interactions with other drugs, says<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.johnabroonmd.com\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John Abroon, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a board-certified internist and primary care physician in New York City. \u201cThe challenge comes from multi-symptom products where it\u2019s paired with 400;\">guaifenesin and pseudoephedrine. According to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=98149172-3ec7-4212-9a37-5501bbfb5829\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DailyMed at the NIH<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Mucinex D should not be combined with a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI). MAOIs are drugs used to treat psychiatric conditions and Parkinson\u2019s disease. Combining any drug containing<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/pseudoephedrine-interactions\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pseudoephedrine with an MAOI<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can elevate your heart rate and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9680847\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cause high blood pressure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mucinex-dm-and-monoamine-oxidase-inhibitors-maoi\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mucinex DM <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=70987d06-d206-445f-bd0d-5e1345b8465c\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DailyMed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also warns against combining Mucinex DM\u2014which contains both <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">guaifenesin and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dextromethorphan\u2014with MAOIs. The reason for this is that combining any medication containing dextromethorphan with MAOIs<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK604212\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">raises your risk of serotonin syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is when too much serotonin builds up in your body from taking medications that raise your serotonin levels.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/serotonin-syndrome-treatment-and-medications\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serotonin syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can cause agitation, muscle tremors, disorientation, increased heart rate, and can be potentially life threatening.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mucinex-dm-and-ssris-snris-and-tcas\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mucinex DM <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and SSRIs, SNRIs, and TCAs<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At times, combining Mucinex DM with SSRIs, SNRIs, and TCAs can be problematic in the same way that combining Mucinex DM with MAOIs can be. \u201cDextromethorphan can raise serotonin levels, so combining it with MAO inhibitors or other serotonergic drugs increases the risk of serotonin syndrome,\u201d Dr. Abroon says. \u201cAgitation, tremor, and high blood pressure are red flags.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mucinex-dm-and-respiratory-suppressants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mucinex DM and respiratory suppressants<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK604212\/\"> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">StatPearls <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at the National Library of Medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, combining Mucinex DM (dextromethorphan\/guaifenesin) with any medication that causes respiratory depression can be risky. Examples of medications to be cautious with include opioids and benzodiazepines. Alcohol is also a respiratory depressant, so take precautions while on Mucinex DM. Concerning symptoms include sedation, confusion, and dizziness.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mucinex-food-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mucinex food interactions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There aren\u2019t any specific foods or non-alcoholic beverages you need to stay away from when you take Mucinex, Mucinex D, or Mucinex DM. There are also no interactions between these medications and grapefruit. \u201cGrapefruit, which often interferes with drug metabolism, doesn\u2019t pose a concern with guaifenesin,\u201d Dr. Abroon says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mucinex-and-alcohol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mucinex and alcohol<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mucinex DM (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dextromethorphan\/guaifenesin)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shouldn\u2019t be combined with respiratory depressants like<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/mucinex-and-alcohol\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alcohol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cMixing alcohol with dextromethorphan can make side effects like dizziness and drowsiness worse, making it harder to think clearly and move around,\u201d explains Menachem Jacobs, MD, co-founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/outlive.bio\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outlive Biology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a resident physician at Yale New Haven Hospital. \u201cYou should limit or avoid alcohol because it can make side effects more likely and may make the medication less effective.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mucinex-and-caffeine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mucinex and caffeine<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caffeine, whether in coffee, tea, energy drinks or other products, can cause <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/does-caffeine-raise-blood-pressure\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">negative side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when combined with medications containing pseudoephedrine. As such, you should be cautious when combining Mucinex D with caffeine. \u201cTaking caffeine and pseudoephedrine together can make side effects like anxiety, a fast heartbeat, and trouble sleeping more likely,\u201d Dr. Jacobs warns.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-minimize-mucinex-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to minimize Mucinex interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Again, if you are taking Mucinex products containing <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">only<\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/guaifenesin\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">guaifenesin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you likely don\u2019t need to change your behavior, as there are no<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> known medications that should be avoided. The same goes for foods or other substances that interact poorly with guaifenesin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, if you are taking Mucinex D or Mucinex DM, consider the other medications you are currently taking. This doesn\u2019t necessarily mean that you can\u2019t take the medication altogether, but you may need to be cautious with dosing and timing. Contact your healthcare provider or pharmacist for medical advice if you are taking medications like MAOIs, SSRIs, SNRIs, or respiratory depressants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Jacobs, if you are taking Mucinex D or DM with other medications, you should be aware of potential unusual symptoms, such as an irregular heartbeat, trouble breathing, or changes in blood pressure. \u201cIf there is a known interaction, the drug combination may need to be completely avoided to avoid bad effects,\u201d he advises. \u201cChanging the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/mucinex-dm\/dosage\">dose<\/a> by itself may not be enough to lower the risks that come with these interactions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are unable to take Mucinex D or Mucinex DM, there are many over-the-counter alternatives to consider, according to Dr. Jacobs.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/saline-nasal-spray\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saline nasal sprays<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, steam inhalation, and drinking more water can help with coughing and chest congestion. You may also be able to take an alternative cold medicine or cold product that doesn&#8217;t cause serious side effects when combined with other medications you are taking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDepending on each person&#8217;s health needs and preferences, these options may be good for them,\u201d he says. \u201cA healthcare professional can help you find the best option for you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"when-to-talk-to-a-healthcare-provider-about-mucinex-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When to talk to a healthcare provider about Mucinex interactions<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MAOIs, SSRIs, SNRIs, and respiratory depressants are just some of the medications that can be problematic when combined with Mucinex D or Mucinex DM. Mucinex products may interact with other medications, vitamins, or supplements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each of us is unique, and it\u2019s essential to stay in contact with your healthcare provider when starting a new medication.
