hypertensive effects of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catapres<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d explains <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jessicairoanya\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jessica Iroanya<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Pharm.D., BCMTMS. That means that combining <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beta blockers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catapres<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can cause excessively <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low blood pressure<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, slow down your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart rate<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> too much, and cause symptoms like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dizziness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or fainting.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"calcium-channel-blockers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Calcium channel blockers<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/calcium-channel-blockers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Calcium channel blockers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medications<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lower blood pressure<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by preventing calcium from entering your blood vessel cells, causing the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood vessels<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to relax. Similar to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beta blockers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the problem with mixing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">calcium channel blockers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catapres<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is that they have similar <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to each other. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Calcium channel blockers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can enhance the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood pressure<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> lowering <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">effects of clonidine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, increasing the risk of hypotension,\u201d Dr. Iroanya describes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"tricyclic-antidepressants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tricyclic antidepressants<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/tricyclic-antidepressants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tricyclic antidepressants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are a type of antidepressant with less effectiveness compared to SSRIs and are more likely to cause <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. According to Ritu Goel, MD, psychiatrist at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindclaire.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mindclaire Psychiatry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, combining <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tricyclic antidepressants<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catapres<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201ccan increase the metabolism of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clonidine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, reducing its effectiveness, as well as increasing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sedation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and leading to unstable <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood pressure<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"central-nervous-system-depressants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Central nervous system depressants<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/publications\/dictionaries\/cancer-terms\/def\/central-nervous-system-depressant\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Central nervous system depressants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medications<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that slow down your brain activity and have calming and relaxing effects. Examples of central nervous system depressants include<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/benzodiazepines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> benzodiazepines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/opioids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opioids<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can interact poorly with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catapres<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Additionally, says Dr. Goel, \u201csleep aids, and even allergy <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medications<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like hydroxyzine can interact with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clonidine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, resulting in excessive <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drowsiness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, respiratory depression, confusion, or impaired reaction time and coordination.\u201d This may pose safety risks while driving or operating machinery.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"catapres-and-grapefruit\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catapres<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and grapefruit<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catapres<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> doesn\u2019t interact poorly with any food. Although many <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medications<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> interact with grapefruit, when it comes to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catapres<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cno known harmful interactions exist,\u201d Dr. Goel says. Still, according to Dr. Goel, consuming large amounts of grapefruit may cause interactions with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medications<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catapres<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Dr. Iroanya suggests eating grapefruit in moderation when taking Catapres.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"catapres-and-alcohol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catapres<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alcohol<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like opioids and benzodiazepines, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/alcohol-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alcohol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is also a central nervous depressant. As such, it can be dangerous to combine <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catapres<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alcohol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cBeing a CNS depressant, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catapres<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can increase <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drowsiness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dizziness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and increased reaction time,\u201d Dr. Goel says. \u201cI recommend avoiding <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alcohol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when on the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medication<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"catapres-and-caffeine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catapres<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and caffeine<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/caffeine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caffeine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> doesn\u2019t have to be avoided completely when taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catapres<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but some precaution is warranted. \u201cCaffeine might slightly raise <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood pressure<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but small amounts are usually okay,\u201d Dr. Iroanya says. If you are consuming caffeine with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catapres<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cit is advised to monitor <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood pressure<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart rate<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d Dr. Goel shares.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"combining-catapres-with-cbd-and-illicit-drugs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Combining Catapres<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with CBD and illicit <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drugs<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Goel, mixing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catapres<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with CBD can increase some of the sleep-inducing effects of both <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drugs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, making you more lethargic and drowsy ,and may cause difficulty waking. The same is true of marijuana, which is another central nervous depressant that can interact poorly with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catapres<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to Dr. Goel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the flip side, certain <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/cns-stimulants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">central nervous system stimulants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can also be dangerous when combined with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catapres<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cPsychostimulants like cocaine, MDMA, and methamphetamine can dangerously interact to increase <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood pressure<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or even cause arrhythmias (irregular <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart rate<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">),\u201d Dr. Goel warns.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"catapres-and-herbal-supplements\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catapres<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and herbal supplements<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are certain herbal supplements that may interact poorly with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catapres<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cIt is important to disclose all herbal supplements and vitamins being taken to your provider, as there can be <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drug interactions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with some herbal supplements,\u201d Dr. Goel says. She warns against combining <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catapres<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/st-johns-wort\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">St. John\u2019s wort<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can lessen the effectiveness of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catapres<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while metabolizing it faster.
