And at least one of these side effects requires some potentially significant lifestyle adjustments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The side effect in question? <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These medications may increase your risk of infection<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/humira\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adalimumab<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/prednisone\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prednisone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/vincristine-sulfate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vincristine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tacrolimus\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tacrolimus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you are taking may compromise your immune system. They are immunosuppressant drugs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sounds alarming, but what does it even mean?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What does it mean if a drug is an immunosuppressant?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt means the medication has the potential to interfere with the processes in the body that prevent infection,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacificu.edu\/about\/directory\/people\/jeff-fortner-pharmd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jeff Fortner, Pharm.D<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">., an associate professor at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon. He explains that this interference is what allows the medication to work.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How and why this happens depends on the particular drug, Dr. Fortner says. In general, however, the medication causes all or part of your immune system to \u201cturn off\u201d so that your body doesn\u2019t go into attack mode, waging war against whatever it sees as a foreign invader.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chemotherapy, for example, kills off white blood cells. White blood cells fight infection, so fewer white blood cells leads to an increased risk of infection, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cancer\/preventinfections\/patients.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centers for Disease Control<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (CDC) explains. With biologic drugs like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/humira\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Humira<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, used to treat a variety of autoimmune conditions like Crohn\u2019s disease and rheumatoid arthritis, only certain inflammatory receptors are impacted, specifically tumor necrosis factor alpha. Steroids and anti-rejection medications target T-cells, which are lymphocytes that control immune response.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe anti-rejection [protocol] generally is just a blast to your system to suppress everything,\u201d says Ramzi Yacoub, Pharm.D., the chief pharmacy officer for SingleCare.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Okay, so does this mean that if you are taking one of these medications you will fall ill every time you pass by someone with the sniffles? Or is it only the big stuff, like the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-to-prevent-the-flu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">flu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or tuberculosis? Are you going to need to live in a bubble from here on out?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are the side effects of immunosuppressants?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortunately, in most cases, an <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">actual<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> bubble won\u2019t be necessary. However, it is extremely important to understand the ramifications of living with a compromised immune system so you can protect yourself and\/or your immune compromised family and friends, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohsu.edu\/people\/aliolyaei\/afe02c4202f5816ce0f44138e5aeadd1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ali Olyaei, Pharm.D<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">., a professor and transplant pharmacist at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, Oregon.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side effects of immunosuppressant medications may include gastrointestinal problems like diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. However, the most serious side effect of taking an immunosuppressant is the risk of infection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That could mean catching every single bug <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/why-kids-get-sick-at-school\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">your child brings home from school<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or the very real possibility that a flu diagnosis will land you in the hospital. You are also more likely to experience complications from foodborne illnesses, bug bites, and environmental hazards (like mold). Oh, and you know all of those <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/measles\/cases-outbreaks.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent measles outbreaks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? You could be at risk, even if were up to date on your MMR before you started taking your new medication. Immunosuppressants also leave you at risk for very rare and difficult to treat infections, such as fungal pneumonias and certain types of lymphoma.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou are stuck between a rock and a hard place,\u201d Dr. Olyaei says, adding that your individual degree of risk depends on the medications you are taking along with many other factors (although <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4751577\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one recent study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> indicated that for patients taking corticosteroids, every 5 milligrams increase in dosage correlated with a 13% increase in infection risk).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How to stay healthy while taking immunosuppressants<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, what is an immune-compromised person to do? Here are a few tips:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Be diligent about basic hygiene procedures such as hand-washing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Everyone knows that hand-washing is the best thing you can do to avoid getting sick, but it is even <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> important for those who are immune-compromised and anyone who comes into contact with them.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Make sure to wash fruits and vegetables<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Avoid people who have active infections<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (don\u2019t be shy about telling people to keep their distance, either).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>You may need to wear a mask<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at times (if you are on an airplane and people are coughing, for example), and it is also wise to avoid large crowds.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Staying up-to-date on all of your vaccinations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is extremely important.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Adopt healthy lifestyle practices<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (get plenty of sleep, exercise, and eat a healthy diet).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Be sure to wear gloves<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when dealing with things like pet excrement.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you think you might be sick or show any signs of infection, call your doctor immediately. The wait-and-see plan that applies to so many other people does <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">apply to the immunocompromised population.
