However, the duration of side effects for Zepbound and Wegovy varies per individual.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"heading-12\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zepbound<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHow long a patient takes to adapt to the side effects of the medications varies considerably. Interestingly, Zepbound, which works on two receptors, seems to have fewer side effects. Nevertheless, the side effects tend to subside as the dose of the medication is adjusted every four weeks. Some patients experience no side effects (or fewer side effects). The negative side effects of GLP-1s vary from patient to patient. I do find that patients are more likely to tolerate Zepbound than Wegovy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-are-the-long-term-side-effects-of-zepbound-and-wegovy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the long-term side effects of Zepbound and Wegovy?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The side effects of Zepbound and Wegovy are often short-term and lessen as your body adjusts to the medication. However, discuss potential long-term side effects with your healthcare provider to make an informed decision if you plan to use them for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">long-term weight management<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"heading-15\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zepbound<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cZepbound has been on the market for only three years, but its possible long-term side effects are likely to be similar to those of other GLP-1s,\u201d Dr. Brown says.\u201cWhen I start patients on Zepbound, we discuss the potential concerns of thyroid cancer, pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, or kidney problems. These long-term problems are rare.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"heading-16\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to an<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/hub.jhu.edu\/2024\/01\/11\/ozempic-wegovy-weight-loss-drugs-pros-cons\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Johns Hopkins University, researchers have yet to fully understand the long-term effects of GLP-1 medications, including Wegovy. In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/healthcare-pharmaceuticals\/wegovy-weight-loss-sustained-four-years-trial-novo-nordisk-says-2024-05-13\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one clinical trial<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that spanned four years (the first long-term study on Wegovy), 17% of over 17,000 participants discontinued Wegovy due to gastrointestinal side effects, such as nausea (most common). Additionally, GLP-1 medications, including Wegovy, may be associated with a slightly increased risk of thyroid cancers, and the risk increases the longer you are on the medication.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"zepbound-and-wegovy-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zepbound and Wegovy interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similar to most drugs, Zepbound and Wegovy interact with other medications. Discuss all the medications and supplements you are taking with your healthcare provider. They can guide you on how to use them safely.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"zepbound-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zepbound interactions<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Sulfonylureas and Meglinitides:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If you are on Zepbound and have Type 2 diabetes, your healthcare provider may need to adjust the dosage of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/sulfonylureas\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sulfonylureas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/meglitinides\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meglitinides<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to reduce the risk of hypoglycemia.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Insulin: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The combination of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/insulin-prices\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insulin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Zepbound may interact to lower blood sugar levels. It&#8217;s essential to work with your healthcare provider while using insulin and Zepbound to avoid dangerously low sugar levels.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Other <\/b><b>glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GLP-1) receptor agonists<\/b><b>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do not combine Zepbound with products containing the active ingredient tirzepatide (like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/mounjaro\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monjauro<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ), or other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/glp-1-agonists\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLP-1 receptor agonists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Oral contraceptives:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Zepbound affects the absorption of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/best-birth-control-pill-contraceptive-guide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oral contraceptives<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (birth control pills). They are contraindicated,\u201d Dr. Brown says.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Age limitations: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy is not recommended for children under 12 years old. Zepbound is not approved for people under 18 years old.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Severe gastrointestinal problems:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cI try to avoid GLP-1s, including Zepbound and Wegovy, if a patient has chronic pancreatitis or severe gastroparesis\u2014slow gastric emptying usually caused by diabetes,\u201d Dr. Brown says.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Type 2 diabetes: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with Type 2 diabetes need ongoing support while on Zepbound and Wegovy. \u201cI monitor patients with diabetes on insulin; adding a GLP-1 medication could make them severely hypoglycemic,\u201d Dr. Brown says.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Pregnancy:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It\u2019s advised to discontinue Wegovy and Zepbound two months before conception and not to use them in pregnancy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Breastfeeding: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do not use Wegovy and Zepbound if breastfeeding. It is unknown whether the medication can be passed through breast milk.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Other health conditions: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discuss your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.novocare.com\/mash\/resources.html#:~:\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medical history<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with your healthcare provider. Particularly, let them know if you have kidney problems, pancreatitis, type 2 diabetes, a history of retinopathy, or mental health issues (depression or suicidal thoughts) for proper monitoring. These medications are not recommended for people who have had suicide attempts or active suicidal thoughts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Surgery:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Notify your healthcare provider if you are scheduled for surgery or procedures that require sedation. Wegovy and Zepbound increase the risk of food and liquid getting into your airways during such procedures.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Overdose: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The recommended maintenance dose for Zepbound is 5 mg, 10 mg, or 15 mg for weight loss (once-weekly injection), starting with a lower dose of 2.5 mg and increasing to a higher dose after four weeks. For Wegovy, the maintenance dose is 1.7 mg or 2.4 mg, with a starting dose of 0.25 mg, administered once weekly, followed by a gradual increase to a higher dose based on your treatment plan. Symptoms of an overdose include severe nausea, vomiting, or very low blood sugar. If a patient has significant side effects despite following this advice, I\u2019ll consider lowering their dose temporarily,\u201d Dr. Brown explains. \u201cSome patients never adjust to the side effects of Wegovy and Zepbound, and are not able to take it at any dose.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, learn the proper administration technique (subcutaneous injection in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm) and always rotate injection sites to avoid skin reactions. Finally, read the drug information, and direct questions to your healthcare provider if anything is unclear.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-treat-side-effects-of-zepbound-and-wegovy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to treat side effects of Zepbound and Wegovy<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI advise patients that if they are experiencing any side effects or are not sure if certain effects are due to the medication, they should call me immediately. Usually, the symptoms can be managed.
