About 15% of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clinical trial<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> participants reported cold symptoms like a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-to-stop-a-runny-nose\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">runny nose<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/sore-throat-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sore throat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and 12% had diarrhea or nausea.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCompared to other medications for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overactive bladder<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/39970965\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">just as effective<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 if not more so \u2014 with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33592817\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lower risk of side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dry mouth<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">constipation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d says Allie Buttarazzi, MD, a double board-certified physician and co-owner of Maine Street Medical near Portland, Maine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"serious-side-effects-of-gemtesa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious side effects of Gemtesa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serious side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">older adults<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or their caregivers should watch out for are <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">angioedema<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">urinary retention<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Dr. Buttarazzi says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">angioedema<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 swelling of the face, lips, or throat \u2014 is a rare, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">life-threatening<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> side effect that \u201crequires immediate medical care.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Urinary retention<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or the inability to pee, also requires urgent medical attention, especially if it has progressed to the point of severe distention or lower abdominal pain.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-soon-do-gemtesa-side-effects-start\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How soon do <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gemtesa side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> start?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no standardized timeline for when <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gemtesa side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> start. It could take several days for Gemtesa to be eliminated from the system after the last dose.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-are-the-long-term-side-effects-of-gemtesa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the long-term <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects of Gemtesa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Urinary retention<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> issues are the only long-term <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effect of Gemtesa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Urinary retention can easily be remedied by a medical professional draining the bladder with a catheter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"gemtesa-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gemtesa interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c[Gemtesa] has a very low risk of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drug interactions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is especially helpful since many <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">older adults<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are on multiple medications,\u201d Dr. Buttarazzi says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medications that may interact negatively with Gemtesa include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Other <\/b><b>overactive bladder<\/b><b> medications<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Combining Gemtesa with other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/myrbetriq-alternatives\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OAB<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> treatments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> increases the risk of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">urinary retention<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/digoxin\"><b>Digoxin<\/b><\/a><b> (<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lanoxin\"><b>Lanoxin<\/b><\/a><b>)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Combining Gemtesa with this heart medication can cause <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">digoxin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to build up in the body instead of being excreted at the usual pace.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to share a full list of your medications (including <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over-the-counter<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> drugs and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supplements<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) with your prescriber and pharmacist before starting Gemtesa.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"safety-measures-while-using-gemtesa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Safety measures while using Gemtesa<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gemtesa is considered generally safe for adults. It has no FDA \u201cblack box warnings&#8221; or drug recalls for these medications. It is not habit-forming, and there have been no reports of Gemtesa overdose. However, Gemtesa is not approved for pediatric use, and there is insufficient data to determine its safety in pregnant or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breastfeeding<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> women.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, there are safety measures when considering the potential for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gemtesa side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in elderly patients. The first? Whether the patient is able to verbally or nonverbally communicate symptoms of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">urinary retention<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cIt is necessary for the patient to be able to inform a loved one or doctor if they have not urinated in over 12 hours or are having sudden abdominal pain with the inability to pass urine,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/troy-alexander-el-md-8b6381152\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Troy Alexander-EL<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, board-certified internal medicine and primary care physician in Portland, Oregon. \u201cI would be cautious of using this medication in those with cognitive conditions such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/dementia-treatments-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dementia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Buttarazzi also recommends that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">older adults<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or their caregivers monitor for signs of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hypertension<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (high <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood pressure<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">urinary retention<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> symptoms. She says it\u2019s especially important to pay close attention to signs of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">urinary retention<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">older adult<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is on other medications known to cause <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0090429524007635\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may include<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> other beta-3 adrenergic <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">agonists<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, certain <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anticholinergic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> medications, certain <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/snris\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (SNRIs), and more.
