Stay away from Gemtesa if you have allergies or hypersensitivities to the active ingredient in the medication. \u201cGemtesa is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vibegron<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or any of its components,\u201d says<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/houmanmd.com\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Justin Houman, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, urologist at Tower Urology and assistant professor of Urology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes people are concerned about the cognitive effects of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overactive bladder<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> medications. For example, there is some evidence\u2014as outlined in a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldjournal.net\/article\/S0090-4295(24)00006-2\/fulltext\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2024 review published in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Urology<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014that the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overactive bladder<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> medication<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/oxybutynin-chloride\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oxybutynin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may cause impaired memory, increased risk of dementia, and other adverse cognitive outcomes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Dr. Houman assures that Gemtesa doesn\u2019t carry similar risks. \u201cUnlike some <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anticholinergic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> bladder medications, Gemtesa doesn\u2019t carry the same cognitive <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effect<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> risks,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, there are some groups that Dr. Houman says should approach Gemtesa with caution, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Pregnant or <\/b><b>breastfeeding<\/b><b> people. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data is limited on the impacts of Gemtesa on pregnant or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breastfeeding<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> people. \u201cWe generally avoid prescribing Gemtesa in these situations unless the potential benefit clearly outweighs the risk,\u201d Dr. Houman says.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Children. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gemtesa is not approved for use in pediatric patients and should be avoided.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>People with severe uncontrolled <\/b><b>hypertension<\/b><b>. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caution should be exercised in certain individuals with high <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood pressure<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cBecause <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vibegron<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can slightly increase <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood pressure<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, caution is warranted in patients with poorly controlled <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hypertension<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d Dr. Houman explains.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are no <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drug interaction<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> warnings for Gemtesa. However, when taking<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Gemtesa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with a heart medication called<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lanoxin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/digoxin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">digoxin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), you should be cautious. \u201cIt can interact with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">digoxin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so monitoring drug levels is important in patients on both medications,\u201d Dr. Houman says. You should also not <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/gemtesa\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">combine Gemtesa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overactive bladder<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> medications.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-does-gemtesa-work\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does Gemtesa work?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gemtesa treats<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/frequent-urination-causes\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overactive bladder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in adults and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overactive bladder<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in males who are treated for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">benign prostatic hyperplasia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BPH<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.urologyhealth.org\/urology-a-z\/o\/overactive-bladder-(oab)\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Urological Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overactive bladder<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a condition where you experience a strong urge to urinate even when your bladder isn\u2019t full. People with an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overactive bladder<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tend to make many trips to the bathroom, and the urge to pee may wake them up at night. In some cases, individuals with an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overactive bladder<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may simply feel the urge to urinate, while others feel the urge and end up leaking urine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gemtesa works on the receptors in your bladder that promote urine storage, says<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhhospitals.org\/doctors\/Sheyn-David-1912131665\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David Sheyn, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, OB-GYN and associate professor of urology at Case Western Reserve University. \u201cIt works by relaxing the bladder muscle and increasing how much urine can be stored,\u201d he describes. \u201cThis leads to fewer symptoms of an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overactive bladder<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like urgency, frequency, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">urge urinary incontinence<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gemtesa is a type of medication called a beta-3 adrenergic <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">agonist<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which means it works differently in the body than other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overactive bladder<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> medications. \u201cUnlike <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anticholinergics<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Gemtesa doesn\u2019t act on muscarinic receptors, so it avoids <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like dry mouth, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">constipation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and cognitive changes,\u201d Dr. Houman explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-are-the-side-effects-of-gemtesa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects of Gemtesa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious side effects of Gemtesa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are rare, Dr. Sheyn says. \u201cThe medication is generally well-tolerated,\u201d he notes. Still, like any medication, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gemtesa.com\/overactive-bladder-treatment\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most common side effects of Gemtesa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headaches<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Urinary tract infections<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (UTIs)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nasal congestion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cold symptoms, like a runny nose or sore throat<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upper respiratory tract infections<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Less commonly, Gemtesa may contribute to the development of the following <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medical conditions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"urinary-retention\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Urinary retention<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gemtesa.com\/hcp\/oab-safety\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the drug manufacturer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, some people <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">taking Gemtesa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> report <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">urinary retention<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is when they are unable to completely empty their bladders. The overall risks of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">urinary retention<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are increased in people with bladder outlet obstruction and in people who take<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/muscarinic-antagonists\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">muscarinic antagonist medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overactive bladder<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If you show signs of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">urinary retention<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, please seek <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medical advice<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare provider<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"elevated-blood-pressure\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elevated <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood pressure<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Houman says some people who <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">take Gemtesa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> note mild <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood pressure<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> elevations. As such, he advises that people with hypertension monitor their <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood pressure<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> regularly.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"angioedema\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Angioedema<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In rare cases, patients have reported <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">angioedema<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (swelling) of the face or larynx when <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">taking Gemtesa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to the drug manufacturer. This is usually due to an allergy or hypersensitivity to Gemtesa. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Angioedema<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> typically occurs within a few hours after taking the drug, either the first time you take it or after multiple different times. When swelling of our upper airway happens, it can be <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">life-threatening<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If you experience any facial or throat swelling after <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">taking Gemtesa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you should stop <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">taking Gemtesa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> immediately and seek emergency medical care.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"liver-or-kidney-problems\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Liver or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kidney problems<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some medications can be hard for your kidneys or liver to process. What about <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">liver problems<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kidney problems<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when it comes to Gemtesa? Thankfully, Gemtesa shouldn\u2019t be an issue for most individuals with liver or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kidney problems<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGemtesa is metabolized minimally by the liver and excreted primarily via urine and feces,\u201d Dr. Houman says. \u201cIt does not typically cause renal or hepatic toxicity, but dose adjustments may be needed in severe renal impairment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-take-gemtesa-safely\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">take Gemtesa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> safely<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Gemtesa is prescribed at a dose of 75 mg, taken by mouth <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">once daily<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. How and when you take it are flexible, and it\u2019s best to find a method that works best for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGemtesa can be taken with or without food, so patients have flexibility,\u201d Dr. Sheyn says.
