It can be incredibly stressful, and whether conditions like depression and anxiety arise from these stresses or complicate them, there\u2019s no question that mental health is a struggle for many teenagers. With an increased societal awareness of mental health issues in recent years, it\u2019s important to understand just how prevalent these issues are and what we can do about them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-mental-health-conditions-are-most-common-in-teens\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental health conditions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are most common in teens?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adolescents<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are susceptible to a wide range of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental health disorders<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, just like adults. However, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/children-mental-health\/data-research\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> data<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the most commonly diagnosed <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adolescent mental health conditions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are anxiety, depression, and behavioral disorders (in that order).<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anxiety\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/health\/publications\/generalized-anxiety-disorder-gad\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Institute of Mental Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, generalized <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anxiety disorder<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> might manifest as excessive worry, restlessness, irritability, difficulty concentrating or sleeping, headaches, stomach pain, sweating, and\/or fatigue. Many teens and adults live with anxiety every day without seeking help, although common treatments include psychotherapy, medications like SSRIs or SNRIs, meditation, and support groups.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"depression\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety is sometimes linked to depression, and while they can exacerbate each other, they\u2019re two separate conditions.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/mind-and-mood\/depression-symptoms-recognizing-common-and-lesser-known-symptoms\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depressive disorders<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can cause<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> low moods, diminished pleasure in activities, changes in appetite or weight, sluggishness, fatigue, feelings of worthlessness, and\/or brain fog.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"behavioral-disorders\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Behavioral Disorders<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Behavioral disorders are slightly more complicated to classify because they encompass several different conditions, including <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADHD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). Treatments can include cognitive behavioral therapy, family therapy, social training, educational support, and medication.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"other-conditions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other Conditions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Haiyan Wang, MD, medical director and psychiatrist at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/neurowellnessspa.com\/about\/care-team\/dr-haiyan-wang-psychiatrist-and-medical-director\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neuro Wellness Spa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COVID-19 pandemic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and subsequent isolation were particularly detrimental to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adolescent<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> mental <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">well-being<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cIn my daily practice, I saw a significant increase in OCD, including fears of contamination, fears of getting sick, worries that something bad would happen, social anxiety, and many other forms of anxiety.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aja Chavez, executive director of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adolescent<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> services at<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/missionprephealthcare.com\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mission Prep Healthcare<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, says she\u2019s also seen a rise in trauma exposure. \u201cTrauma can stem from many causes, including family conflict, online harassment, or sudden loss, but it often presents with more common symptoms like sleep problems or irritability, making it a bit less obvious than some may realize.\u201d Additionally, she says, \u201cI\u2019m also seeing more attention difficulties, sometimes classic <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADHD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and sometimes screen-driven overload, alongside <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eating-disorder<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> concerns that are fueled by unrealistic beauty standards and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">social media<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> expectations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"prevalence-of-teen-mental-health-conditions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prevalence<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">teen mental health conditions<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About 1 in 5 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adolescents<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ages 12-17) report symptoms of anxiety or depression. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/covid-19\/roughly-1-in-5-adolescents-report-experiencing-symptoms-of-anxiety-or-depression\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">KFF, 2024<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fifty percent of all lifetime <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental illness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> begins by age 14, and 75% by age 24 (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nami.org\/about-mental-illness\/mental-health-by-the-numbers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Alliance on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mental Illness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2023<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An estimated 49.5% of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adolescents<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have had a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental health disorder<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at some point in their lives. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/health\/statistics\/mental-illness\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Institute of Mental Health, 2024<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"teen-mental-health-statistics-worldwide\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teen mental health statistics<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> worldwide<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Globally, one in seven 10-19-year-olds experiences a mental disorder. That\u2019s 15% of the total burden of disease experienced in this <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">age group<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/adolescent-mental-health\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WHO, 2024<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mental disorders affect approximately 166 million <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adolescents<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (89 million boys and 77 million girls) globally. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/data.unicef.org\/topic\/child-health\/mental-health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UNICEF, 2021<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of mental disorders affecting children ages 10\u201319 worldwide, 42.9% were anxiety or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">depressive disorders<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 20.1% were conduct disorders, 19.5% were <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADHD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 14.9% were Idiopathic developmental intellectual disabilities, and 9.5% were other mental disorders. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/73\/su\/su7304a9.htm#T2_down\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2024<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2024 in the U.S., 2.6 million <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adolescents<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> aged 12 to 17 said they had serious thoughts of suicide in the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">past year<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 1.2 million made a suicide plan, and 700,000 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">attempted suicide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.samhsa.gov\/data\/sites\/default\/files\/reports\/rpt56287\/2024-nsduh-annual-national-report.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SAMHSA, 2024<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"teen-mental-well-being-and-overall-health\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teen mental <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">well-being<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and overall health<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research has made it clear that mental and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">physical health<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are closely connected, so teens who have mental disorders are often at a higher risk of physical complications. And Chavez says it\u2019s often caused or exacerbated by sleep changes, stress, and poor nutrition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnxiety and low mood often push bedtimes later and disturb quality rest. On top of that, many teens are late-night scrolling, which deepens the circadian delay and results in feeling exhausted and foggy,\u201d she says. \u201cWith chronic stress, I also see more frequent minor illnesses and slower recovery.\u201d Plus, \u201cchanges in movement and nutrition, whether it\u2019s inactivity or carb grazing with depression, can carry cardiac risks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These factors are especially important for teens, according to Dr. Wang. \u201cDuring <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adolescence<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the body and brain are going through major developmental stages. At this time, a lack of self-care, nutrition, or medical attention can greatly interfere with growth and overall physical <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">well-being<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d she says. \u201cWe also know there are real biological effects\u2014such as increased cortisol and hormonal changes in those with anxiety and depression. In the brain, neuroplasticity and receptor activity are also disrupted when depression and anxiety are high.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are statistics on how <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental health conditions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> might manifest physically:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with depression have a 40% higher risk of developing cardiovascular and metabolic diseases than the general population. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nami.org\/about-mental-illness\/mental-health-by-the-numbers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(National Alliance on Mental Health, 2023<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a European study, people with depression had a 10\u201339% increased risk of cancer, depending on the type of cancer. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9954234\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brain Sciences, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2023<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">33.5% of U.S. adults with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental illness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also experienced a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">substance use disorder<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2021. (National Alliance on Mental Health, 2023)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High school students<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with significant symptoms of depression are more than twice as likely to drop out compared to their peers. (Clarify Health, 2023)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"factors-influencing-teen-mental-health\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Factors influencing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">teen mental health<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mental health is complex, and it has an array of influences, including biological, environmental, social, and genetic factors. Struggles with mental health are rarely the result of a single factor, so it\u2019s important to consider all the possible contributing influences in an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adolescent<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s life. For example, biological factors might include nutrient deficiencies, thyroid issues, chronic illness, or obesity, while psychological factors might encompass temperament, negative self-talk, stress management abilities, or grief.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For teens, the environmental factors are particularly wide-ranging. They can include sleep deprivation, academic pressure, family conflict or divorce, bullying\/cyberbullying, discrimination (race, gender, sexuality), financial strain, and community violence, according to Chavez. Dr. Wang adds, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social media<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has had one of the biggest impacts\u2014it moves so fast there is no time to slow down or reflect. Once something is posted, it cannot be taken back. Teens are constantly exposed to snapshots of others \u2018best moments,\u2019 which can make them feel like they are the only ones who are lonely, boring, or left out.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important not to forget that genetics can also play a role\u2014some people are simply predisposed to certain mental disorders based on their family history and genetic makeup. \u201cConditions such as anxiety, depression, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADHD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and mood disorders are highly heritable,\u201d Dr. Wang says. \u201cA family history of these conditions does not guarantee a teen will develop them, but it does increase their risk.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"supporting-teen-mental-health\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supporting <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">teen mental health<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parents, guardians, or other immediate family members are the most intimate and important support system for teens who struggle with mental health. How they respond can be particularly effective in helping support their children. \u201cOne of my biggest pieces of advice is to lead with relationships, not quick fixes,\u201d Chavez says. \u201cGet curious before you advise, reflect what you hear, and ask simple check-ins like \u2018What felt hardest today?\u2019 or \u2018Where are you on a 0\u201310 scale right now?\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, she suggests encouraging 8\u201310 hours of sleep every night, winding down screens an hour or more before bed, and building \u201ca weekly rhythm that includes movement, one social touchpoint, one genuine joy\/hobby, and manageable school blocks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental health care<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also often involves professional treatment. Finding a therapist experienced in working with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adolescents<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an important step, and many schools also have <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">school-based<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> counselors or social workers that students can visit during the day. For serious issues, local <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare providers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have inpatient <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental health services<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">substance abuse<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> rehab where teens can check in for short-term stays.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mental health screenings are also helpful in identifying and effectively treating particular <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental health disorders<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and they\u2019re typically covered by insurance plans.
