Because Adderall increases activity in your nervous system, it can also have effects beyond the brain, including on your heart and blood pressure. Does <\/span>Adderall<\/span> raise <\/span>blood pressure<\/span>?<\/span><\/h2>\n

If you\u2019ve ever noticed your heart beating a little faster after taking <\/span>Adderall<\/span>, that\u2019s not unusual. It\u2019s part of how stimulant medications work. Adderall increases levels of certain brain chemicals that heighten alertness, focus, and energy. This can also cause a temporary rise in heart rate and blood pressure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Research shows that <\/span>stimulant medications<\/span> like <\/span>Adderall<\/span> can raise <\/span>blood pressure<\/span> by <\/span>2 to 4 mmHg<\/span><\/a> on average. For reference, a <\/span>normal blood pressure<\/span><\/a> reading is below 120\/80 mmHg. \u201cHowever, the degree of blood pressure elevation varies among individuals and may be significantly higher in some cases,\u201d explains Paul Choi, PMHN<\/a>, psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner at Neuro Wellness Spa.<\/span><\/p>\n

The increase in <\/span>blood pressure<\/span> from <\/span>Adderall<\/span> is typically modest and not a concern for most people when used as prescribed, adds <\/span>Anoop Singh, MD<\/span><\/a>, board-certified psychiatrist and regional medical director with Mindpath Health.<\/span><\/p>\n

Still, those with high blood pressure, heart disease, or who take other stimulant medications should be cautious. In those cases, \u201cthe increase in <\/span>blood pressure<\/span> and <\/span>heart rate<\/span> could be clinically significant and potentially problematic,\u201d Dr. Singh says.<\/span><\/p>\n

How long does <\/span>Adderall<\/span> raise <\/span>blood pressure<\/span>?<\/span><\/h3>\n

Adderall\u2019s<\/span> effects on <\/span>blood pressure are<\/span> temporary and last only as long as the drug is in your system. \u201cThe effect is dependent on how long the medication lasts in the body, typically 4 to 12 hours depending on whether it\u2019s immediate- or extended-release and the dosing schedule (one vs multiple daily doses),\u201d Dr. Singh explains.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Once <\/span>Adderall<\/span> wears off, your <\/span>blood pressure<\/span> will generally return to its normal level. There\u2019s no evidence that <\/span>Adderall<\/span> causes permanent <\/span>high blood pressure<\/span><\/a> in otherwise healthy people. However, if you are taking <\/span>Adderall<\/span> every day and your <\/span>blood pressure stays elevated after the medication wears off, it could become a concern over time. If the medication consistently raises blood pressure to unhealthy levels, especially with long-term use, talk to your healthcare provider.<\/span><\/p>\n

Who is at risk for elevated <\/span>blood pressure<\/span> from <\/span>Adderall<\/span>?<\/span><\/h2>\n

For most people with normal <\/span>blood pressure<\/span> and no heart issues, a small rise of two to four points isn\u2019t usually a concern. But for certain groups, Adderall\u2019s potential side effects on blood pressure and heart rate can be more serious.<\/span><\/p>\n

People with pre-existing heart conditions<\/span><\/h3>\n

Those with certain cardiovascular issues should be especially cautious when taking <\/span>Adderall. According to Choi, individuals with any of the following are at higher risk of adverse heart effects<\/span>:<\/span><\/p>\n
