They can \u201cstart within a few days of treatment starting but fade within two to four weeks at a stable dose,\u201d she says. \u201cSerious, but rare, side effects can appear at any point and duration depends on the complication,\u201d she adds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-do-zepbound-side-effects-last\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long do Zepbound side effects last?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For most people, side effects improve as the body gets used to the medication. Some may last just a few days, while others can continue for weeks. As mentioned, most side effects resolve after a few weeks on a stable dose. Gastrointestinal issues can also continue for some patients: In one study of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama\/fullarticle\/2812936\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">patients taking tirzepatide for more than nine months<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (36 weeks), diarrhea (11%), nausea (8%), and vomiting (6%) were the most common long-term side effects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other long-term side effects that can occur include \u201cpersistent GI intolerance or nutritional challenges, possible mood or behavioral changes, and weight regain upon stopping,\u201d Dr. Tambini adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"zepbound-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zepbound interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like many medications, Zepbound can interact with other drugs, changing how they work and increasing the risks of side effects:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People on other GLP-1 drugs such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ozempic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (semaglutide) or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/saxenda?q=Saxenda\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saxenda<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (liraglutide) should not be prescribed Zepbound, as they have similar effects that can compound.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People on insulin may need to work with their healthcare provider to reduce their dosage of insulin or insulin-affecting drugs (e.g., <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/sulfonylureas\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sulfonylurea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> drugs such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/glipizide\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glipizide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Otherwise, there may be an increased risk of hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, which can cause dizziness, lightheadedness, weakness, or fainting.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zepbound can reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/contraceptives\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oral contraceptives<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). People on birth control pills may need to explore non-oral birth control methods, including barrier methods (condoms), contraceptive injections, patches, or intrauterine devices four weeks after starting or increasing Zepbound dosage.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zepbound slows down how food and oral medications move through the digestive system. For this reason, it has the potential to affect how any oral medication is absorbed into the bloodstream. Healthcare providers may monitor people on drugs that require specific blood levels to work, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/warfarin-sodium\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">warfarin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, antidepressants, and antibiotics.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"safety-measures-while-using-zepbound\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Safety measures while using Zepbound<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zepbound isn\u2019t safe for everyone. People with certain health conditions or risk factors may need to avoid it altogether, while others should use it with caution and close monitoring.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similar to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/wegovy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (semaglutide), Zepbound carries a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/black-box-warning\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">black box warning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of its risk of developing certain types of thyroid cancers. In clinical studies with rats, tirzepatide caused medullary thyroid cancer, thyroid C-cell tumors. The risk of tumor development increased with higher doses and longer treatments. The warning states that it\u2019s not clear whether tirzepatide causes thyroid C-cell tumors in humans. People with diabetic retinopathy, on diabetes medication, undergoing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/general-anesthetics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">general anesthesia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, taking medications for high blood pressure, or who are at risk of dehydration require more caution and monitoring when taking Zepbound.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The highest dosage for Zepbound is 15 mg weekly. People who overdose on tirzepatide should contact 911 and poison control.
