Complex carbohydrates (natural sugars), such as those in vegetables and whole fruits, break down slowly, giving your body a steady stream of energy. Simple carbs, such as refined sugars, including table sugar and high-fructose corn syrup, digest quickly and can cause <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dartmouth-health.org\/articles\/what-sugar-does-your-body\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood sugar spikes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> followed by a sharp crash.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over time, some people develop <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/insulin-resistance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insulin resistance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, when cells stop effectively responding to insulin, no longer storing sugars, and leaving blood levels high. This is a medical emergency in which the liver breaks down fat to use for energy, producing dangerous levels of ketones. That dip is what many people call a sugar crash.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes called reactive hypoglycemia or postprandial hypoglycemia, it\u2019s what is responsible for those queasy feelings. You may feel tired, shaky, hungry, or irritable. It can trigger cravings for carbs or sweets as your body tries to quickly raise blood sugar. \u201cThe experience of a \u2018crash\u2019 varies from person to person, with individuals who have insulin resistance, prediabetes, or diabetes tend to have more dramatic fluctuations,\u201d Dr. Warren adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">True hypoglycemia occurs when your blood sugar remains low and is most common in people with diabetes, though it can sometimes happen in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/hypoglycemia-without-diabetes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people without diabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, too. Persistently high blood glucose levels (hyperglycemia) can damage blood vessels and nerves over time, raising the risk of health issues, like eye disease (diabetic retinopathy), kidney problems, gum disease, skin infections, and heart disease. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/hyperglycemia\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20373631\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Illness and stress can also trigger<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or make hyperglycemia worse.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"managing-your-sugar-intake-and-feeling-better\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Managing your sugar intake and feeling better<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To avoid the uncomfortable sensations that may follow a sugar binge, Drs. Whisman and Warren recommend these lifestyle changes:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Eat smaller portions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over a longer period of time to avoid a blood sugar spike.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Pair sugary foods with protein<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and high-fiber foods for a better balance.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Minimize sugary drinks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as soda, juice, coffee specialty drinks, and alcohol<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Stay hydrated<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/lower-blood-sugar-fast\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">flush out extra sugar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Get some <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/does-exercise-lower-blood-sugar\/\"><b>exercise<\/b><\/a><b>.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cEven a light walk may decrease that glucose spike,\u201d Dr. Whisman says.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><\/li>\n<li><b>Seek medical advice <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or ask for an evaluation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Work with a dietitian or a nutritionist<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to design a personalized eating plan.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you have risk factors such as a family history of diabetes or obesity, you should ask your medical provider to perform a screening test,\u201d Dr. Warren recommends. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/diabetes.org\/about-diabetes\/diagnosis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several different tests<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can help diagnose diabetes, including the A1C test, the fasting plasma glucose (FPG) test, and the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT).
