A person is typically diagnosed with severe hypokalemia when that number falls below 3 mEq\/L.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"how-much-potassium-should-i-take-daily\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How much potassium should I take daily?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/Potassium-Consumer\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amount of potassium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you need every day varies by age and sex. In fact, many people are deficient in potassium today.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most over-the-counter potassium supplements contain no more than 99 mg of potassium due to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration\u2019s (FDA) safety findings. Depending on how deficient you are, your healthcare provider may recommend you take one pill once or twice daily (or they may instead recommend a higher dose prescription version of potassium), though it varies based on your health conditions and any medications you are taking. \u201cFor example, if you are on diuretics, you may require more potassium because your body is excreting at higher levels,\u201d Dr. Connealy says. \u201cAn individualized approach based on blood tests can help determine what\u2019s best for the patient.\u201d If taken as directed, potassium can safely be taken every day, Dr. Connealy adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-should-not-be-taken-with-potassium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What should not be taken with potassium?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To get the most benefits from potassium, it\u2019s important to be aware of medications and supplements that should not be taken at the same time.
