This is known as an herb-drug interaction, when one increases or decreases the effects of the other, and it can have serious consequences. Because of this, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nccih.nih.gov\/health\/turmeric\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommends talking with a healthcare provider before using any herbal supplements, including turmeric and curcumin, if you take any type of medicine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though turmeric is a common seasoning, the risks aren\u2019t the same as food sources because supplements are more concentrated, Dr. Rao says. Not only are supplements more potent, they\u2019re also sometimes formulated with black pepper or piperine for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/vitamin-absorption\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased bioavailability<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This makes their effects\u2014both positive and negative\u2014heightened compared to consuming the herb in your favorite curry. Curcumin <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">does <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have benefits, particularly its anti-inflammatory properties, but too much of anything can become a bad thing. Curcumin is no exception.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This serves as a good reminder that \u201cnatural\u201d doesn\u2019t always equate to \u201csafe.\u201d Turmeric is a natural herb, and though it\u2019s associated with many health benefits, there are times when it can have adverse effects, especially when herb-drug interactions are ignored.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"8-turmeric-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8 turmeric interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turmeric is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nccih.nih.gov\/health\/turmeric\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">likely safe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when used in the recommended amounts for up to two to three months. However, it may be risky in combination with certain medicines, such as the following.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-blood-thinners\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Blood thinners<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9775400\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has shown that curcumin may block platelets (cells involved in blood clotting and wound healing) from grouping together, which could disrupt blood clotting. For this reason, it\u2019s known to possess anticoagulant (aka blood-thinning) properties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of this, turmeric supplements could interact with some blood thinners, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/digestivereset.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inna Melamed, Pharm.D.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a pharmacist in Manalapan, New Jersey. \u201cTurmeric could add to the effects of these medications, potentially increasing the risk of bleeding,\u201d Dr. Melamed explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This makes it risky to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7522354\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mix turmeric<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/anticoagulants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood thinners<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/aspirin-low-dose\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aspirin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (acetylsalicylic acid)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coumadin (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/warfarin-sodium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">warfarin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/plavix\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plavix<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/clopidogrel-bisulfate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clopidogrel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lovenox\/dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lovenox<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (enoxaparin)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliquis (apixaban)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xarelto (rivaroxaban)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"2-diabetes-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Diabetes medications<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curcuminoids, a group of compounds primarily consisting of curcumin, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8126655\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have been shown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to decrease blood sugar levels. Because turmeric supplements may <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/lower-blood-sugar-fast\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lower blood sugar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they could be unsafe to take with diabetes medications.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doing so could increase the risk of hypoglycemia, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/low-blood-sugar-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low blood sugar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Dr. Melamed says. This can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/diabetes\/about\/low-blood-sugar-hypoglycemia.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cause symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like a fast heartbeat, shaking, sweating, and dizziness. In some cases, low blood sugar can be severe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While stronger studies are needed to confirm its effects, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7522354\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">researchers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> still warn about the additive effects turmeric may have on antidiabetic drugs. Per Dr. Rao, these can include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/insulins\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insulin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as Humalog (insulin lispro), Lantus (insulin glargine), and Novolog (insulin aspart)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/sulfonylureas\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sulfonylureas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as Glucotrol (glipizide) and Diabeta (glyburide)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glucophage (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/metformin\/dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metformin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meglitinides, such as Prandin (repaglinide) and Starlix (nateglinide)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DPP-4 inhibitors, such as Januvia (sitagliptin) and Onglyza (saxagliptin)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLP-1 agonists, such as Ozempic (semaglutide), Trulicity (dulaglutide), and Victoza (liraglutide)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"3-stomach-acid-reducers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Stomach acid reducers<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turmeric may help reduce stomach acid and the associated esophageal damage, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6471759\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in animals suggests. This effect of turmeric overlaps with that of stomach acid reducers, also known as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/antacid\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antacids<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These medications can help relieve <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/gerd-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, commonly referred to as acid reflux or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/home-remedies-for-heartburn\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heartburn<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7522354\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests turmeric, which is known for its digestive properties, can <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increase <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stomach acid levels, reducing the effectiveness of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/best-heartburn-medicine\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stomach acid reducers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tagamet-hb\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tagamet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/cimetidine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cimetidine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/pepcid\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pepcid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/famotidine\/dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">famotidine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zantac-360\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zantac<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ranitidine)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/prilosec-otc\/dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prilosec<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (omeprazole)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of this, turmeric may worsen acid reflux in those taking acid reducers, Dr. Rao explains. There are also other unwanted effects of curcumin that have to do with digestion. \u201cHigh doses can cause nausea or diarrhea and have been linked, in rare reports, to liver damage, especially when combined with black pepper extract that boosts absorption,\u201d Dr. Rao says. Certain immunosuppressants<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turmeric belongs to the wider Zingiberaceae family of plants, which has known <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8120430\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">immunomodulating effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This refers to the ability of something to either boost or suppress the immune system. In many cases, these effects lend to the anti-inflammatory properties of turmeric.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although turmeric could conflict with immunosuppressant treatments, which are intended to suppress or weaken the immune system, it typically interacts with certain immunosuppressants because of its effects on the liver.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best example of this is the interaction between turmeric and tacrolimus, which has been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9611668\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">documented<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in several case reports and animal studies. More specifically, turmeric can block the metabolism of tacrolimus in the liver, increasing the levels and potential side effects of tacrolimus (such as kidney damage).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-certain-chemotherapy-drugs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Certain chemotherapy drugs<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curcumin has a long list of beneficial properties: antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and even anticancer. While <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10144810\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some systematic reviews<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> call for additional clinical trials in humans with early-stage cancer, there is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11165187\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some evidence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to suggest that curcumin protects DNA from the damage caused by free radicals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In some instances, turmeric may increase the efficiency of some chemotherapeutic medicines, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10111629\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6680685\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Laboratory studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also show that the combination of curcumin and certain chemotherapy drugs is more effective at inhibiting stomach and breast cancer cells than either one individually. Albeit positive, these enhanced effects are still interactions. This also isn\u2019t always the case; turmeric can have a negative interaction with some chemotherapy drugs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turmeric could reduce the effectiveness of tamoxifen for breast cancer, especially in people who naturally process the chemotherapy drug quickly. One study found that turmeric <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30909366\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lowered blood levels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of tamoxifen and its active form, endoxifen. This interaction was amplified when tamoxifen was taken alongside turmeric and the bio-enhancer piperine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it\u2019s always recommended to consult a healthcare provider before mixing herbal supplements and medicines, it\u2019s non-negotiable in this case. Curcumin is not FDA approved as a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/cancer-causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treatment for cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and shouldn\u2019t be used as such.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"6-antihypertensive-drugs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Antihypertensive drugs<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While more studies are needed, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9075737\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">researchers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have identified blood pressure-lowering properties of curcumin. So what could happen if someone takes both turmeric supplements and antihypertensive (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/hypertension-causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high blood pressure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) medications? Turmeric could interact with some medications for hypertension, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/norvasc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Norvasc<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (amlodipine), Dr. Melamed says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/13880209.2020.1764060\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one animal study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that curcumin and amlodipine together have a stronger effect on blood pressure than amlodipine alone. However, this is more likely due to curcumin slowing the breakdown of amlodipine in the liver, increasing its levels and effect in the body. Another <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9862944\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">animal study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found a similar interaction between curcumin and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/cozaar\/dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cozaar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (losartan).<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"7-certain-antidepressants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Certain antidepressants<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Further human studies are warranted, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28734960\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that there may be an interaction between curcumin and antidepressant medications. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/23673908\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pilot studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have shown that curcumin potentiates the antidepressant effect of some antidepressants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s12630-017-0918-9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one published case<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a person taking Prozac (fluoxetine) and a turmeric supplement developed serotonin syndrome after being given fentanyl during a procedure. The report suggested that the curcumin in turmeric may increase serotonin in the brain by acting on the same receptors that many antidepressants do. This could lead to excessive serotonin levels as a result.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) can also disrupt the function of platelets, increasing the risk of bleeding with other blood thinners. Because turmeric may have similar effects, there may be an increased risk of bleeding while taking turmeric with these antidepressants.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"8-certain-pain-relievers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8. Certain pain relievers<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The anti-inflammatory properties of curcumin may alleviate certain types of pain, such as joint pain in those with osteoarthritis. It\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9353077\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">been shown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to improve levels of inflammation and pain in those with arthritis. However, it may not be safe to combine curcumin supplements with certain medications for pain relief.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like Advil (ibuprofen), Aleve (naproxen), and aspirin may increase the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/is-ibuprofen-a-blood-thinner\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">risk of bleeding<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, especially with long-term use. Adding turmeric on top of that may worsen that risk, and the risk may be even higher for those who take higher doses or other blood-thinning medications. If you take turmeric regularly, ask your healthcare provider before combining turmeric and ibuprofen or other pain relievers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"bottom-line-always-consult-a-healthcare-provider\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bottom line: Always consult a healthcare provider<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turmeric supplements have garnered considerable attention for their potential health benefits. The active ingredient, curcumin, is associated with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, among other things. However, there are possible side effects and herb-drug interactions with turmeric supplements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re thinking about taking turmeric or curcumin supplements, it\u2019s wise to first consult a healthcare professional, especially if you take medicine of any kind or have an existing health condition. \u201cIf someone is thinking of starting a turmeric supplement, it&#8217;s always important to speak with a healthcare provider,\u201d Dr. Melamed says, adding that interactions are something to be aware of with this herb.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When discussing turmeric supplementation, your healthcare provider may want to know key information, such as the dosage, brand, and form, as well as a full list of any medicines you currently take.
