According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/elizabeth-rubin-ribak-27254338\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Elizabeth Rubin Ribak, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, clinical advisor at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emberstreatmentcenter.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Embers Recovery<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cpatients are still at risk of blood clot formation if a normal dose of Eliquis is missed, if another medication or supplement causes interference with Eliquis absorption or metabolism, or if the underlying cause of clotting is significantly high, such as in cancer patients, those with artificial heart valves, or during prolonged periods of immobility.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, missing doses or taking the wrong dose can reduce Eliquis\u2019 effectiveness, as can certain <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/eliquis-interactions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drugs that interact with it<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014specifically CYP3A4 inhibitors like ketoconazole, ritonavir, and clarithromycin, or CYP3A4 inducers like rifampin or carbamazepine. In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9267894\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a study of 3.9 million people<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with atrial fibrillation, patients taking Eliquis had lower rates of stroke and systemic embolism than those taking vitamin K antagonists (warfarin) or dabigatran (Pradaxa). Additionally, patients taking Eliquis had lower mortality rates than those taking rivaroxaban (Xarelto), and a significantly lower risk of major bleeding compared to patients taking either dabigatran or rivaroxaban.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCompared to warfarin, it offers consistent dosing, fewer drug and food interactions, and no need for regular INR blood tests. It also tends to have a lower risk of major bleeding, especially in the brain,\u201d Dr. Vuppuluri says. \u201cUnlike warfarin, Eliquis is much easier to take as it does not require regular blood tests and it does not interfere with your diet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, compared to warfarin, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.bms.com\/news\/details\/2011\/ELIQUIS-apixaban-was-Superior-to-Warfarin-for-the-Reduction-of-Stroke-or-Systemic-Embolism-with-Significantly-Less-Major-Bleeding-in-Patients-with-Atrial-Fibrillation-in-Phase-3-ARISTOTLE-Trial\/default.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clinical trials found<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that Eliquis was better than warfarin in the reduction of the risk of stroke, systemic embolism, major bleeding, and mortality. And in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama\/fullarticle\/2787319\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a study of Medicare beneficiaries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with atrial fibrillation, Eliquis was more effective than Xarelto in reducing the risk of major ischemic or hemorrhagic events. \u201cHowever, for patients with certain mechanical heart valves or severe kidney disease, other anticoagulants may be better suited,\u201d and \u201cwhat\u2019s ideal for one patient may not be right for another,\u201d Dr. Vuppuluri says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Eliquis only <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prevents <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood clots from forming. It won\u2019t dissolve existing ones. Removing existing clots requires thrombolytic drugs, such as Activase or Retavase, which activate enzymes that break down the proteins in blood clots.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"bottom-line\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bottom line<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For anyone taking Eliquis, the risk of forming new blood clots is extremely low. But it\u2019s not zero. Each person\u2019s risk depends on their specific medical condition, other health issues, adherence to the dosage schedule, and concurrent medications.
