The tablets aren\u2019t scored down the middle to help divide them evenly, and they\u2019re also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/content.boehringer-ingelheim.com\/DAM\/7d9c411c-ec33-4f82-886f-af1e011f35bb\/jardiance-us-pi.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">film-coated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This means they\u2019re covered in a thin layer of material to prevent them from interacting with moisture, air, and light, to block the pill\u2019s unpleasant taste, and to control the absorption rate. Halving the tablet would leave the inside exposed and could negate these properties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/engagewellnessnow.com\/contributor\/dr-pamela-tambini\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pamela Tambini<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, the Medical Director at Engage Wellness in Acton, Massachusetts, says removing the protective coating by crushing or splitting may increase the risk of irritation to the mouth, throat, or stomach. She also warns that \u201ctablet splitting can cause uneven dosing, crumbling, or wastage if the pill breaks poorly,\u201d which could result in poor blood sugar control or ineffective heart and kidney protection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, there\u2019s some evidence that splitting a 25 mg tablet of Jardiance in half is safe and effective:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9020632\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2022 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that 12.5 mg of Jardiance (half of a 25 mg tablet) taken once daily controlled blood sugar levels in people with Type 2 diabetes just as well as 10 mg and 25 mg doses.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/asean-endocrinejournal.org\/index.php\/JAFES\/article\/view\/1483\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2021 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found no significant difference in blood glucose control and weight loss when patients took half a 25 mg tablet of Jardiance versus a whole 25 mg tablet.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wa-provider.kaiserpermanente.org\/static\/pdf\/provider\/patient-ed\/conditions\/jardiance-information.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2017 patient pamphlet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from Kaiser Permanente advises patients who need a 12.5 mg dose to use a pill cutter to split a 25 mg Jardiance tablet into two 12.5 mg halves.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best thing to do is talk to your healthcare provider or pharmacist before splitting Jardiance.
