It includes conditions such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis, characterized by lung damage and inflammation in the airways that carry air to and from the lung air sacs (alveoli). A chronic cough is a common symptom of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/copd-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COPD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, similar to the one experienced by people with infectious diseases like the flu. However, COPD is not a contagious disease and cannot be \u201ccaught\u201d from someone with the condition.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you or your loved one has been diagnosed, your healthcare team would place you on treatments to manage your respiratory symptoms, slow its progression, minimize flare-ups, and improve overall quality of life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-causes-copd\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What causes COPD?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COPD typically occurs as a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK559281\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">result of prolonged exposure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to harmful gases or toxic substances, such as air pollution. Cigarette smoking tops the list as the leading <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/chronic-obstructive-pulmonary-disease-(copd)\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cause<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of COPD. Available evidence indicates that the majority of individuals with COPD are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhlbi.nih.gov\/health\/copd\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">either current or former smokers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You are also at a higher risk when you are regularly exposed to secondhand smoke (i.e., exposure to the cigarette smoke exhaled by someone else).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A combination of other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/copd.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">risk factors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can also lead to the development of COPD:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Exposure to lung irritants:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Regular and long-term exposure to substances that are toxic or may irritate the lungs is a risk factor for COPD. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/chronic-obstructive-pulmonary-disease-(copd)\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These include<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> chemical fumes, dust, and indoor air pollutants, such as those from burning coal or wood.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Having asthma:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> People who have asthma are at a greater risk of developing COPD. However, this doesn\u2019t mean everyone with asthma will develop COPD.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Being a female:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> People assigned female at birth are more prone to developing COPD than those assigned male at birth. The reason for this is unclear. However, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8495113\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">evidence suggests<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that women are more susceptible to the harmful effects of cigarettes, and this may be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atsjournals.org\/doi\/full\/10.1164\/rccm.201512-2379ED\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">attributed to<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> factors like hormones, the smaller lung size, and differences in smoking patterns.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Age:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Symptoms typically begin in people who are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/copd.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at least 40 years<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> old. The risk increases with age, as lung function naturally declines <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lung.org\/lung-health-diseases\/lung-disease-lookup\/copd\/what-causes-copd\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with age<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Genetics:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Genetic disposition may play a role in the development of COPD. People with a rare genetic condition called alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/chronic-obstructive-pulmonary-disease-(copd)\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are at risk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of developing it. Also, smokers are at a significantly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/copd.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">greater risk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if they have a family history of COPD.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"is-copd-contagious\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is COPD contagious?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cChronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is not contagious,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/permian-health.org\/sunkaru-touray\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sunkaru Touray<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, FACP, a board-certified pulmonologist at St. Luke&#8217;s Hospital in The Woodlands, Texas, and founder of Permian Health Lung Institute. Infectious microorganisms do not cause this condition. Instead, it is caused by exposure to toxic irritants like cigarette smoke and air pollutants, \u201cparticularly ultrafine particulate matter known as PM2.5,\u201d which can travel into and deposit on the surface of the deep parts of the lung.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Touray notes that people living with COPD can interact normally with others, including body contact like kissing, as the condition cannot be spread from person to person. However, he notes that individuals with this condition should take precautions to avoid contact with those who have respiratory infections, as COPD increases susceptibility to viruses and bacteria that can trigger a worsening of symptoms, known as an acute exacerbation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are different reasons people with COPD are at a higher risk of respiratory infections. \u201cMany with COPD make excess mucus and have a harder time clearing secretions from the airway due to abnormal bronchial tubes. The stagnant secretions can make it easier for bacteria to grow and infect the airway,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.memorialcare.org\/providers\/jimmy-johannes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jimmy Johannes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, pulmonologist and critical care medicine specialist at MemorialCare Long Beach Medical Center in Long Beach. He also noted that individuals with COPD may have impaired immune cells in the airways, which makes it more difficult for the immune system to clear pathogens in the airways.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"how-can-people-with-copd-reduce-the-risk-of-transmitting-other-infections\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How can people with COPD reduce the risk of transmitting other infections?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While you cannot transmit COPD to others, it causes you to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/coughing-causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cough<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a lot. It\u2019s possible to transmit infections, especially respiratory infections, to others through coughs. Common diseases that can be transmitted through coughs <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.undrr.org\/understanding-disaster-risk\/terminology\/hips\/bi0101\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">include<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the influenza virus, tuberculosis, and pneumonia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUsing good hand hygiene, such as frequent handwashing and using hand sanitizers, can help prevent catching and transmitting respiratory infections,\u201d says Dr. Johannes. The treatment options <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/copd.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may include<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Medications:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Your healthcare provider may prescribe bronchodilators, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK519028\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">such as<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/formoterol-fumarate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perforomist (formoterol)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Serevent Diskus (salmeterol), which are typically administered in the form of inhalers that relax and widen the muscles surrounding the airways. You may also need to take antibiotics if you develop respiratory infections, and also receive vaccines to prevent viral infections.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Pulmonary rehabilitation:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> These <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lung.org\/lung-health-diseases\/lung-disease-lookup\/copd\/treating\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">programs are offered<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in small group settings supervised by healthcare providers. They involve a combination of classes on managing your condition, exercise training, counseling, and nutritional education.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Oxygen therapy:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This treatment aims to increase oxygen flow into your lungs and may be ideal for people with severe symptoms or those with low oxygen levels.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Bronchoscopic Lung Volume Reduction (BLVR) using Endobronchial Valves:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cThis involves placing small, one-way valves into the lungs of carefully selected patients with severe COPD using a bronchoscope,\u201d Dr. Touray explains, adding that the procedure has been shown to improve lung function, symptoms, and quality of life.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Surgery:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Lung surgery is typically recommended as a last resort for some people with severe COPD symptoms who find it difficult to breathe. Surgeries can be performed to remove damaged lung tissue and improve breathing. But not everyone is eligible for this procedure.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no foolproof strategy for preventing COPD, but certain practices and lifestyle modifications can help lower your risk and promote lung health. Dr. Johannes emphasizes the importance of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lung.org\/quit-smoking\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">quitting smoking<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as an important part of managing COPD. \u201cMinimizing exposure to other sources of smoke, air pollution, and dust can also help maintain lung health.
